Hi, first off: What do you study? :)

Then, is there a given theme to consider?

Do you already have an idea what the board and pieces should look like? If not I highly recommend starting with pencil and paper to make concecpts of each piece and the board, so that the design process is done before you start up max - actually building them in 3D will then only need some craftmanship without drawing too much powers to the crative process.

To you start from zero with a tool you don't really know will most likely result in frustration and wasted days.

If you look in the tutorials for 3DMax there is actually a whole section on how to design a chess set. It will also take you through the basics of modelling so you can get to know how to use 3DSMax. Try that.
