first image looks as if it could use some levels tweaking in photoplop.
also, not too sure about your attempt at volumetric lighting. looks like clouds/fog indoors which doesnt ring true.
the fog should more apparent in the path of light where it becomes more illuminated
another thing that gives moody lighting is by use of coloured lights.
nice iris texture on the bttom one

I think the firts one needs more lights to set a mood, youre trying to get a mood by using a coold light and volumetrics, try to use more light sources so you can play with light/shadows contrast to give a better look in the scene..
The second one is OK but some eyes seem to be floating....

thanks for the c's. i thought about those things alot but i made them really fast and i wont work anymore on them more than that. The "escher-scene" is just an old thing i took out to do this lighting-thing with and thanks on the c on the iris-texture, I didnt do them myself though :hmm: ...
