What is Kids Week?
Kids week is an effort to get more kids interested in drawing.

This week we will post topics suitable and aimed to kids between 5 -13 years. The idea is that if you blokes know a kid who likes art, to encourage them to draw,
and post this week.

Also get them to give us their ideas for topics...

To keep things safe;

Kids should only post with the current account of an adult who has been posting with us for a while (parent or relative).

Otherwise it is business as usual...

I am sure we have great childrens book illustrators in our ranks.
Have fun. Post as usual, but remember your target audience.

It's hard to be original with another 'robot' topic... :-)

Kirt: Those are some great robots! I'm just still getting a kick out of the kids drawings! Can't wait until my little guy will stop eating the crayons long enough to actually draw something. :D

Zebula: WOW!!! That's just amazing!

Well, I don't have any kids that I know of, so I had to pitch in.

About 40 minutes in Painter, was playing around (new to it), and it's the first sketch of mine suitable for Kids Week.

Those kids are really lucky. With artistic parents encouraging them, they'll be phenominal before they even loose all their baby teeth.

My little brother aged of 12 years thought he'd like to design a robot. He often makes me color his drawings in photoshop after he's done, so thats what happened here.

how do you paint light-effects well? Do you use a slighter dark/lighter version of the color with a lower opacity or is the burn/dodge tool better?

aesir
01-31-2005, 09:14 AM
Lighting depends on a ton of different factors from what color the light is, to what the color of the object is that the light is bouncing off of. For example, for a face, I might use blue or purple in my shadows. Obects arent made of a single color. A persons face isnt just brown. It has blues and greens and oranges all mixed together. Of course the best thing is usually to study reference, but you get the idea. I dont reccomend you use dodge and burn because it tends to make an image look muddy and washed out.

Hey, I just made a little clip for you, Jannis! It's not much, but a curious little study and ment only as an inspiration, it's by no means accurate, just so you know. It's an event file for openCanvas (1.1)...if you don't have it, you can download it HERE (http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/mowlam/junk/programs/oC11b72.exe)
(I'm pretty sure it is save to post this link, it's a free software!)

Here's the rar-file of the event-file: Lighting_Demo.rar (http://www.taron.de/Storage/Images/2d_sketches/Lighting_Demo.rar)

Really nice technique Taron. Great lighting demo too - I haven't tried OpenCanvas before - had no idea it was such a small download!

Awesome, thanks! Perhaps i should experiment more with 3dsmax to see how objects behave with different spots. I only wonder how you blurred those colors.

Hey, you're welcome, my pleasure!
Yeah, doing so much 3D has truely effected my 2d painting style a lot! On one hand it is very appearant that you can learn a lot from observing 3d rendering, but on the other side it is truely just an approximation of reality and is yet lagging in that regard a bit, despite great radiosity and translucency and all these beautiful features. So it is best to look at 3D for understanding the basic logic of it, but you should then explore reality again and see if you can confirm what you've learned of the 3d stuff in real life.

As for the "blurring" you should examine the brushes in openCanvas a bit, because they have some very nifty settings in form of sliders and such...not much, but actually very intuitive and interesting....and make use of the storing option for your settings into the few containers it has...each major brush type has 5 containers for itself and you can toogle back and forth through them with "e" and "r"....this becomes very rapitly habit and speeds up painting in it a lot!

It's a raw and simple little software, but I really love it! :buttrock:

What's with Thany, his piece is my favorite from the others so far! Excellent work with a good amount of excitement! There are a few different types of values that I use to measure a picture. Direction, strength of content and visual excitement. Thany's falls definitely into the visual excitement category with his iron giant.

Illumino's is touching all of those aspects but in a rather milder level. Cute piece for sure! Shadows take care of the excitement part, but their earily offset towards the smallest robot...perspectively curious idea, but I think it just looks a little distracting!

Novocain did a neat job, too...I think it's nearly purely on the strength of content or symbolism side, eventually visualizing some child's dream...I like it a lot...if it was lit or better shaded more dramatically, it could be a top ranking illustration! It has the spirit!

Kirt just so freaking rocks....nothing to say about this...fantastic direction! :)

I'm not quite sure what happened to drawmonger? Have you skipped the sketches for a while, too? Or done too many? I think it shows some securite here and some sadness there. Hope you're doing good, man! Looks like you're really going for a different type of expression. Very painterly!

There's definitely a whole lot of potential all across the thread, though! So everyone: Rock on! :buttrock:

Taron333

Thanx, Crossbones...but it's not my birthday, just so you know! It'll be a few more months! I gotcha though...

However, it's really fun to do these type of illustrations for kids....so explicit. It invites to stick with rather simple lighting and more clear motives...naive but entertaining. I think these topics are really inspiring and were a great reason for me to resume a bit of painting...like I said, havn't done it in a while again...

So thanx again!

Hey Taron333, i didn't think you could ever do too many sketches...but yes i'm still slinking around in the background and posting a couple of times a week...this year i want to get into colour more, although i still need to get a handle on defining values in B&W. Thanks for the feedback...keep on posting your mad art!

Zebula, number 5 almost looks like a photo!

Thanks! Sometimes it's fun to try to copy a photo as accurately as possible, but I tried not to follow the refs too much for this one (still going for realism though). I often use a reference to help get the shape of objects/people correct, as my brain cannot always be relied upon to do this :)
