Here is something I drew today. I've shown my work progression from start to finish. What troubles me is it looks horrible until about the 4th image. I've learned a lot in the process though. I did the whole thing in photoshop using a wacom tablet. I had trouble with my rough sketch, are there any brushes that work more like a pencil? Also I seem to sort of just rough things out and then go back over everything a hundred times refining the edges, smudging, etc. Is there a better/faster way? I probably spent 6 hours on it. Crits welcome.

I really like the hair, though the shadows seem too dark on some parts of the face

I just started matte painting as well and have yet to discover any short cut's. What I would recommend is get a ton of brushes here's one place (http://www.8nero.net/brushes/)
