View Full Version : Dion's Head Modeling Tutorial
bhealy27 01-29-2005, 10:33 PM Dion Burgoyne has done a super job with his four short videos on modeling a head in Modo. His explanations are crisp and well thought out.
I'd like to follow along, however, I couldn't find a link anywhere to the two images of the young lady he uses to model the head.
Does anyone know if they are available and if so where? I guess I could find something else somewhere to substitute but it's easier if you can follow along exactly.

Phil,
Good to know. I'm glad that there is more to come. Dion does one of the best jobs I've seen in conveying helpful information about Modo and modeling.
Thanks,
Brian
Hmm, so after I have saved my viewport windows and am done with a project how do I delete them? I don't want like 40000 windows to choose from :-P.

Ok, 5 and 6 are done which are chin to cheek regions and patching/cleanup we're going to be doing some updates to the site and they'll be posted just as soon as that happens!

i just want to say thanks Dion, the eye ball modeling part of the tutorial help and improve my modeling. Hope you get to unwraping UVs in Modo, that would be cool to see a practical example of it.

Are there any plans to expand this tutorial to cover the whole body? I really want to learn how to model a complete human, and, as far as it goes, this is the best tutorial I have seen for any modelling.

I'm a complete beginner to modo, so bear with me...
I watched parts 5 and 6 last night, I haven't tried them out yet, but what is he using to weld points together? There seems to be a keyboard shortcut he uses when he's cleaning up the mesh. He cleans it up so fast that I can't follow what is actually being done. I'd love a slower step by step tutorial on cleaning up meshes. What strategy do you follow to create all 4 sided polys from those weird areas that have 5 and 6-edge intersections?
Also, sometimes when I try to do the bridge tool, I end up with a twisted mesh. The only way I can figure out how to fix it is to undo the bridge, and move the mesh around and try again until I get it into a position where it doesn't get twisted when I apply the bridge. Then I move the bridged polys back to where they match the rotoscope. Is that the right way of doing things? It seems Dion 99% of the time gets it to bridge correctly on the first try, for me it's about a 50-50 chance.

First the join verts hot key, in one of the early video's I went through and mapped "Join Vert's" to a hot key... To do this simply select two vert's, go into the main modo menu, select "verts", then select "join verts" and you will get a confirmation box, click OK, you will then get a message box telling you what you did (I usually click on the small arrow at the bottom and tell it to never show me this message again). Now go into your command history (bottom right corner) and expand it up so that you see all of the undo's. Scroll to the bottom and you will see a line that states "Join Vertices" right click on it, and map it to a key.
Second, for cleaning up the area's and turning them into quads and such. There are two tools that I use for this, one is "split poly" for this you simply select two vert's across from each other, and hit ctrl-L. However, that doesn't work all the time, especially for badly non-planer NGons, for those circumstances, I use edge slice "c". If you use edge slice and click on an edge and drag it to either vert (0% or 100%) the vert's will merge into one. you can do this on both sides of the area you want to split.
For the twist, if you are working with poly's you can simply use the "twist" option to fix it. However, edges are a little more tricky. The reason that the edge's are getting messy is because modo can't determine the direction that you're trying to go, generally with edge's, I'm using it to patch up area's as opposed to attempting to force the bridge into a contour. Generally speaking you want to bridge edge's that are directly facing each other, too much translation between the two will result in a twist to the geometry. And if you find it twisting, you can also try using fewer edges between the two, or create an NGon in the open space and slice it back to quads.

Thanks for the tips, I must have missed a video about the join verts.

Can anyone tell me what the easiest way to delete my saved viewports is? As much as I like looking at Adriana_Front, I would prefer to save on my menu space ;)

Its ok, I found the new location for the modoConfig program (http://www.vertexmonkey.com/general_config.php) on Vertex Monkey. Works a treat!
