wow, i didn't know this was possible!
One thing though, about the big water lily in the middle.
The ink fades look too smooth and the edges are to sharp IMHO.
Maybe have the edges bleed a little? Dunno how you can change the ink to make it look more realistic though...
But really cool stuff

Great stuff, I totally love NPR stuff and this was a top example. I have only one teeny crit - the little fly past gif looked too solid, which betrayed its CG origin.
It would be cool to get it to "boil" a little - change the line width, brush size as it rotates so it looks more like an animated painting (dunno, just my opinion, this may not be what you were going for).
Lovely work!

Raymonkey Thank you for your advises, i agree with you about thoes petals should feels softer, i will ajust it.
i just ajusted dragonfly's look also, because it feels too 3D maybe, Well, i post up more one image, please tell me how your feeling is.:)

Looking nice, although the eyes are still a little toony - maybe remove the pupil. Definitely less 3d though.
I have found a couple of examples of "boiling" for you to look at:
Unnofficial Roobarb and Custard Shrine (http://www.sausagenet.freeserve.co.uk/roobarb/)
The image shimmers every frame because each drawing is slighlty different from the next (I hope that makes sense).
Also the short film "Fishing" by PDI does it:
Fishing (http://www.awn.com/mag/issue4.11/4.11clips/Fishing.mov)
This is a little small, but it wobbles as if it was painted on watercolour paper.
Also related, but not quite the same style is the Lambchop video produced by Shynola, which you can grab here:
Is a woman (http://www.cityslang.com/videos/woman.zip)
Which I think is great :) (Although the mov is a little small)
Keep up the good work!

Nice.
I don't know your intentions for the final render, so this is only directed towards the sample. I'm guessing you just wanted to display the 3d nature of the effect with a turnaroung, but in the final render, something this beautiful, and it is, needs to have a very soft attitude. If you're using the piece in a Demo Reel or something, I suggest maybe a Moving Hold for the beginning showing hardly any movement at all. Animate the flowers as usual but only give a slight camera rotation fixed on the flower to enhance the illusion of space.
Lastly, perhaps the timing of the animation could mimick the nature of chinese ink. i.e. Heavily use of a combination of 3D and 2D Motion Blur and a Motion-Ghosting effect on everything in the scene to simulate ink-bleeding.
Was that Maya's standard renderer BTW?
wat a creativity work and good idea, share more with us:beer: :scream: :wip:

Hey facial. That's excellent work!
I just posted (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21323) a thread in the Maya forum about non-photorealistic rendering.
If you could even just describe in a general sense how you got the clean/consistant line on the right flower I'd be THRILLED.
Keep up the good work, I hope to see more great stuff soon!
:bounce:
I like the idea of only moving the camera around slightly as unfortunately so many great NPRs when animated turn back into too much of a 3D look, or perhasp you have enough control in your shaders and outlines to retain the integrity of the elements contributing to a 2D look so that it keeps 2D composition, surface and line integegrity.

Man your work is really great man, very original and he motion it really gives the feeling that it is a animation drawn by oil paint.
You know the oscar wining animation made by a dutch guy, named : the father and the daughter
it is a small animation and it gives the feeling that it is made the same way..
I didn´t read more then the begining but will you have some more test ot gifs??
Maye a idea,.... I c you have a layer over the gif that has a texture f old paper or some.. well it stays in the same place while the camera moves, Maybe it is a idea to give it every frame a random rexture which gives the same feeling as old black and white movie were you get flickering frames... I hope you understand what I mean
xavier
P.s
my opinion is that the dragon fly on the flower ruins a bit the animation (as far as you can call it that)
I mean he grabs the eye cos is red and then he is a bit in the corner of the corner of the screen... so he is´t in composition with the shot and the shot gives the feeling the flower is suposed to be in the attention and not the dragonfly... then I know red inks are usedin those paintigs but still I think it issomething to think abouth
and last thing the dragon fly really looks 3d and the leaves of the flower look like oilpiant strokes and this also is why I think the dragonly fals of the image.

I´m glad you understood what I tried to mention.
Now that I look better at it I c you have a really detailed dragonfly.
His wings have texture, so if you have a shot of flowers which look as if they have been made with oilpaint strokes and a dragonfly which is way smaller and more detailed ( almot real)....then I think they can´t coexcist in 1 picture.
well here is a pic I made, forgive me for the horible photo shop ownmade dragonfly but I hardly ever use photoshop for coloring or drawing. But as you see I pointed out that some things are
really detailed. maybe if you make the wings look like a 3D oilpaint stroke and no veins texture on it. Then I think it will look the same style as the flowers. Abouth the pupil and the black point in the wing, I ain´t sure if they make it look worse or better and that also counts for his legs holding the flower.
But I think that you can make it look better with a less detailed wing.

I can also thank you to make the chinese painting know to people (yep I'm another compatriot :)). I've done some chinese calligraphy some years ago, and it's really awesome it looks like real painting !
Maybe just a thing you should add, is a "backgroung" to simulate the texture of the paper. You know, a bit wavy and undulating and the old-colors-like, that kind of things.
Otherwise, impatient to see the coming work !

That water lily animation thing barely seems possible, it's lovely! Were you going to add any more color, or will everything but the dragonfly stay black and white?
timovihola
10-21-2002, 11:15 PM
First I must say that I've never seen something like this before! The gif animation looked really promising, would love to see this in full screen.. One thing I noticed when I looked at the gif is that the dragonfly could be more as the center of the image, kinda build the scene more around it, the compositions you have going on the still images are really good, but on the animation the dragonfly was cropped partly out of the whole image.
Have you seen Schindler's List (a film directed by Steven Spielberg)? It's black and white film and in few scenes there's a girl with a red dress, everything else around her was black and white.. the camera followed closely what the girl was doing and the viewer did too. Maybe you could remove some details on the less important areas to get the same effect.
I usually watch movies on crappy theaters because the good theaters are too far away, but when you're watching a film in an excellent theater where the canvas fills the whole view the experience is totally different, I believe most film makers make their movies for the best theaters.. so as a director you need to build the scene so the viewer doesn't get lost in the details. On big screen you can't look at the whole image as one, if you're looking at the extra who walks in the left side and you are not seeing the talking main actor on the right side the directing is a failure, I think it was some guy from Pixar who said that they use colours that stand out of the background, details and high contrast to "tell" the viewer where to look at. A good thing about animated films is that there's no details on screen unless you do them yourself, as everything else, details take time to do. The less details you need the faster you can make something. And in some situations less is more, you, as an artist, need to know what to show and what to hide. In this way I really like what you have done so far, white simple background, a flower made using black lines with some detailing and a red dragonfly with the most details.. there's a good contrast between the different elements, maybe even decrease the contrast (=make them closer to white) of the less important parts to get the attention to the flower and dragonfly.. red spot on a white canvas will capture the eyes and when the audience is looking at what YOU want it's easier to tell the story. I got inspiration to do my own short when I saw Pixar's short film "For the Birds", your images have that same feeling mixed with Chinese style :) Inspiring work I have to say!

Especial Timo Vihola, I appreciate what you found in my work. I agree with you about inportant area in a film completely. Glenn (who directe the film "Mulan 2") said to me the same point, He said to me that i should know what things is the best important in this short. I will adjust the dragonfly's role and fade others red elments when i do formal animation. I'v see Schindler's List, I love that shorts you mentioned. I will see it agian.^_^
btw I'v been your website, I wanna say your works is so great, I love them.
Thank you. .
Well, Thank you freeman00, I am create the things you wishes to see, I will post up them and hope you like them when you see them:)
Why go through so much trouble making it 3D when you want it to look 2D.
Just making this in a 2D program would not get any responses from you guys... why the praise just because it's 3D?
dobermunk
10-22-2002, 09:38 PM
why 3D?
1) the look has its own appeal. I don't see freeman's attempt as trying to 'do' the painted brush 1 to 1, but using that as a stylistic point of departure. Just as many artists tyake the photograph. They aren't trying to create a photograph, but the aesthetics are similar.
2) animating this kind of style within traditional animation (brushing every frame) would have a nice look as well, but it would take a very long time.
3) it's there ;-)
btw I would respond whether it was a drawn animation or a 2D program. I follow many threads - these are all tools.

That is some truly beautiful work; I love how much of the Chinese culture is in this piece of work. I myself feel as though I have China blood running through my vanes must of the time. So naturally a piece like this would appeal to me. But alas, I am but an American. Yet, I really love your work. Keep it up man.

I like the different perspectives of 'C' alot.
Like a dragonfly, the pupils aren't really pupils, but rather textures on the eyes. The 2nd and 3rd images of 'C' work best for me.
edge:
The 'C' in the first jpg and the 'C' viewed from above both have harder edges than the 'C' from the side, which don't work as well. And the softer edges are transparent. If possible, I think the soft edge needs to be in keeping with the body and also block out elements behind it. In a painterly approach, I don't think there would be this kind of overlapping of inks, first you would paint the eye, then the head, then the legs, each time lifting the brush to avoid existing ink.
color:
I think the greyish tones of the eye in 'D' work well with the reddish body. If you like the color in C, I would consider reducing the yellow.
detail:
I like the structure, but it has to fit in between the body (no texture/soft edge) and the wing (tight brush/hard edge). Right now it looks like a procedural that is niether here nor there (even though it looks good). Maybe if you can make it blotchier, i.e. 'F' with a filter?
Looking great!

Hey, what a wonderful project! :buttrock:
Your work is original and very creative. The render have the feeling of the original paintings, but I think it would be better if you included some 2D parts. I mean, to put some chinese letters or drawed things on the composition.
When I see your work, I imagine the camara panning from right to lefto or left to right- The camere shows the flowers, that moves with the wind or something, and then the shrimps that move as if they were in a river or something. That, combined with chinese letters, etc, would made a killer video! :D
If you need any help compositing or with the processing, drop me a mail!

WOW!!!
This is absolutely one of the most amazing things I've ever seen done in a 3D program. I can't wait to see more!
I've had an interested in architecture for as long as I can remember, and I've always particularly liked japanese and chinese architecture and art. Incidentally, my favorite architect is Frank Lloyd Wright, who at one point had amassed the largest collection of Japanese prints outside of Japan.
This is just awesome. What I'd love to see you do with it is have a photorealistic scene morph into a painting like this, and then back away to show a painter painting the scene as it animates on the paper. Then maybe the dragonfly could fly up out of it.
I´m always pleased if I have a look
at your posts. Thanks - this pics are
as great as everytime.

Unbelievable!! This is very beautiful work and the potential is so far reaching. i can imagine a vast pond filled with waterlilies that are being gently rocked by the waves and the wind, insects buzzing in and out of view and the sound of flute played by someone in the distance. This is exactly what made me want to leave traditional painting for the pixeled world. I am beyond impressed, i am inspired.

I'm just the beginner in the 3d field, I'm glad that you sent me the message. Your work is wonderful, I like people with original idea, you're now doing the animation with this style, right.
Some western people may not be able to accept the work with too "localized" idea, they need to be directed and know the spirit of Chinese Painting, is the "Water" usage ....with deformable shape and free style...., something like the usage of Particle, but not in the clone of nature, this is the unique oriental spirit that can wow the audience!

Hi, like I said earlier, I really love the style you have in this line of work. I just looked at the camera-move video you posted, and it looks like you'll be able to pull off the animation well.
I have just one suggestion: Try to keep the camera movement as subtle as possible. I'm afraid that changing the camera angle too much will give away the 3D aspect too much and take away from the painted look. You know, the way that cell-shaded 3D often gives itself away by trying to overdo it. You might do best with slow camera movement, from maybe just an overhead angle, and concentrate your animation on the animals and plants. That way it will look more like a painting come to life rather than a stylized VR tour.
Once again, beautiful work, I hope you finish a nice animation and send it to Siggraph and other festivals. Best of luck,
- Me

And with just this particular matter you can have serious attention. Add to this a little story and you have a perfect piece.
