View Full Version : How can I improve mentalray BUMP quality?

Hi guys.
I tested a bump texture in maya default renderer and mentalray with the same setting,and found that maya default renderer got much more detail.How can i improve bump quality in mentalray?

Turn down the filtering on both the texture map and the bump node.

Hi,Jackdeth.I tried and got this image following.It's much better now,but still can't access such detailed as maya default renderer.Can I got the same or nearly the same bump quality in mentalray?

Just my two cents... though I can't add anything to what Jackdeth said about getting MR's bump "quality" to be the same as Maya Default... your new MR produced image looks much better than the original maya default one. You generally WANT some filtering, which you're getting just slight filtering on the newest image, because that eliminates noise. The original maya default rendered image is noisy.

you can also try the simbiontMaya.. it performs bump outside mentalray and it could be at
least an alternative if you're experiencing bump problems.. care also must be taken to
avoid noises and shading weirdness (like the renderer that 'absorbs' all the shading or
that displays an hard transition around the terminator) by playing with the samplesize and
bump factor.. also the actual size of the texture and how much it is repeated or scaled
could be significant to avoid high frequency procedurals that return noise... not last for
high quality bumps will be good to supply a really low threshold for sampling.
