View Full Version : RE: 3d models in demo reel...what background?
phix95 01-28-2005, 10:31 PM I've seen mostly models put in a totally white background w/soft lighting (e-light?). So this setup is good? Also I am having trouble making the elight do what i want it tol. I've futzed w/the settings for about an hour and it still doesnt look right. (I have browsed numerous threads already for this and cannot find it. I may not have looked at them ALL so please don't get on my back if I missed it)
Any comments/help for any of the above?
thanks

Try to looking for in-studio tips photo instead a 3D app tutorials, also my advice is try to use a global ilumination in a withe background.

I'd give your models a nice, well lit lighting setup (probably standard Dome-Light with a spot and a backlight) to show off the models.
Might want to have the model stand on an plane with a matte/shadow material on it so that it recieves shadows but is on a background color.
Take a look at Hiko's modeling showreel if you want to see an awesome modeler's showreel:

I just watched Hiko's showreel and while he's obviously a exceptionally talented modeller, I think he makes a few mistakes with his showreel.
Firstly: Don't put techno/rock tracks on your showreel. As much as it may suit the mood of your models, spare a moment to think of the person who has a pile of 500 showreels to look through, all of which have thumping techno music. I hear alot of recruiters watch reels on mute because of it.
Second: 'Artsy' camera pans which flick back and forth across models or different camera effects may add some artistic flair to your reel, but generally they tend to detract from your modelling, which if you're applying for a modelling job is what the potential employer will want to see. You're probably best sticking largely with turnarounds and stills, imo.
As for the background colour, again i'd say it's whatever makes it clearest to see your model. If your character is wearing all black, then it's probably not going to do you any favours putting them on a black background.
Generally, just bear in mind the person that's going to be watching the reel, try and anticipate what they will and won't want to see, and use common sense and you should be fine.
