View Full Version : Are SATA hard drives supposed to be noisy?

Just bought and installed a Maxtor 120GB SATA HD. Just curious if it's supposed to be louder than a regular ATA HD, because mine is. Just trying to get an idea of how loud it should be. It's making me think about taking it back to the store to exchange it.

Performance is top-notch and speed is excellent. Just seems to be a quite bit noisier than my older HD. Maybe I should run a HD diagnosis tool like DFT or something similar?

In most cases, the SATA hard drive is mechanically identical to the IDE version. Thus the drive is no more or less noisy than its counter part on the IDE side. This is because most SATA hard drives are PATA drives with SATA interfaces.

If you want a silent SATA disk get the 160 Gig Samsung Spinpoint

I´ve got a Maxtor 120er, but an elder IDE here, and i must say - damn- its so loud, that after 10pm, I have to shut that thing down. But: I got several HD´s in the Past, and what I think to kept on track is that all of them, once build in as new, by one ore two years they where getting louder and louder. You have the comparison, when you build in the next one. And we have since the 20/40 gig generation quite right silent HD´s.
What is told over to be a bit louder, is the 10000 mph turning Western Digital Raptor - but it´s really fast!

I was reading some online articles about people keeping thier systems quiet, and there was one where people were suspending thier HD's using shoestrings so that metal from the HD would not be touching metal from the mount or the case. That is what makes the most noise. I would experiment with either buying rubber screw gaskets, or or try the shoe string thin and I also believe they make HD silencing kits which basically include strips of foam rubber to sit you HD on inside the mounting area instead of having it touch metal. Look into articles and stuff like that on the internet. The metal to metal connections generally create the most noise in you computer case. This is where MOST of you HD noise come from. Hope that helps!

I have got both Raptor and Spinpoint SATA hdd... I totally agree that WD Raptor is a noisy monster, however You can decrease the noise generated by this machine using technique described in the last post and it is really cost-effective ... (At least for me  )

Good luck!

I don't recommend hanging your drive on wires or similar. Current disks have very low access times, resulting in high acceleration and decceleration values of the heads. If the disk isn't mounted rigid the heads can overshoot leading to readerrors or more often a substancial loss of speed due to errorcorrection.

I GOT THE ANSWER TO THE NOISE:scream: !!! I was just about to re-post a post that I had earlier this month then I saw this post this morning. I recently brought a maxtor 80gb 7200rpm 8mb buffer quiet fdb motor"which seems to work now" here is the solution if you have a maxtor drive the noise is caused by the seek time the seek time on my drive is 9ms so upon a google search I found a program called AMSET from maxtor so its legit to set the acoustic management mode of the hard drive. After downloading the file from maxtors official site I ran it and my drive was set automatically to "performance" I really wanted to see if this "AMSET.exe" file made a difference so I set the acoustic level to the lowest setting "quiet" turned off everything that made noise inside my room closed the doors closed the windows etc. No noise upon the start up of windows ok getting a little happy at this point :) but not totally sure. So I began lauching program after program "photshop, alias sketch pro anything heavy on the hard disk that takes a little loading time"

that I know would surely make noise because even opening internet explorer to load the msn home page would start the gargling noise or rolling marbles and this is a brand new drive. Did more test like let the system sit idle and then launching the programs from the taks bar I thought for sure this is it now but I was wrong no noise at all I am so happy i have my tower sitting on the desk now to ensure that this works and for me it does with maxtor drives here is a link to the maxtor software and article http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=1200

Now I dont know if this will cause data lost or anything but my system so far seems fine they say you take a hit in perfomance but I am so happy right now I cant feel it.ohhh soooo quiet. I hope this solution works for you guy's and gals too PEACE:thumbsup:

Well i just got myself a new hitachi IDE 200 GB, and it's quiet, for 5 min and then you hear a weird noise like...eeeeeeee...for 3 seconds?? it does it every 5-10 min.
