I have been out of the hardware loop for a while and. I am now considering buying a new pc. But I am not sure how much, I would benefit from it. Due to my lack of pc hardware knowledge as of late.

What I use my pc for.

I use lightwave for work , zbrush and Photoshop

I have been considering duel AMD Opteron Processors.

Also I am trying to find a good duel Opteron motherboard.(none list on new egg)

I am also considering buying an alienware Roswell 5550.

Or the new Aurora because of the SLI Technology

So what would you do?

Or should I wait is there something new on the way?

I need this pc to last a few years.

I have a budget of $3,000.00 any advice is appreciated

My System at the moment.

Seagate 160GB Barracuda 7200.7 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

Mushkin's Black label Level II. Black heatspreaders.1gb (2x512) PC3500

RADEON 9800PRO 128M

Mother board-- GA-K8NNXP

64 |3200+ Socket 754 (one of the first ones released)

POWER SUPPLY ANTEC TRUE430

I have now added generic ram called GIGARAM 128X64 PC3500. I removed the Mushkin which was a big mistake. I have also added another 7200 hard drive i.d.e. as a back up.

check my post (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=205714). Iīm in the process of buinding my own system.

What you have to know is that MOBOs for Opterons donīt come with PCI-Express yet. So youīll have to choose an AGP x8 graphics card.

Opterons are cheaper and seem to be faster due to the faster access to RAM.

As for the 64 bits, thatīs all marketing bullshit at the moment. Iīve read that Intel has 80% of the market, so the 64 bits software will be available when that 80% upgrades processors. So... donīt buy any hardware thinking about the future. Ask yourself what you need now. Youīll be asking the same question in two years again.

If you have any advice, or questions just tell me.

Good luck,

Hey Laddie !

I am wondering what was the biggest scene you have ever rendered ...? 2M polygons 3M?

Do not say AMD 64 bit tech. is a shit if you have never used it before!

I've got experience with this tech - I use soft for 3d, but not fot typical CG but for science visualisation (it runs under 64-bit red hat enterprise 3) and fact is : it is the only hardware platform that allows You to achieve resonable performance for realy high quality models : over 4M polygons (single model). We mainly use them in analysis of NMR analysis and related.

This thechnology was avalible previously in MIPS, SPARC processors for enormous price. Now You can go to every single PC store and buy 64-bit machine. The real bullshit is fact that software developers do not want to prepare 64-bit versions of their software, because the market (as You have mentioned previously) is saturated with x86 PCs!

That is the fact!
You do not have to accept it...

PS

I am still working at SGI Octane 2 station in my lab. I wish You could see the Vieports performance while opening or rotating models (in really old version of Softimage) that I prepare for example in Zbrush 2. You would probably admitt that there is a great benefit from 64 bit technology and adressing. (Although SGI Octane 2 is rubbish in comparison with PC I normally use at home 2xOpteron 250 + 4GB RAM + GeForce6800 Ultra (PNY)@ Quadro FX 4000).

Best wishes...

Hey! Hold on and read eagain... I said marketing bullsit not that the hardware was shit  .

The problem is that thereīs no software.

In fact, if you check my post, youīll find that Iīm building 2 dual opterons. Maybe because I need them for my little scenes.

As for your viewport speed... isnīt that related to the video card?
Best regards.
