My computer will be used for modeling, animation and rendering in Maya only. I have looked at all previous threads and didn't find the clear answer to my question. Would a Xeon 3.0 emt64 with HT perform and render better then a dual opteron 244 in Maya?? Also in non multi thread applications would the xeon or opteron perform better.
Also what motherboard do you recommend either for the Xeons or the Opterons. I'm going to buy the 6800gt and mod it to quadro 4000. Can I mod the 6800gt pci-e with RT to the quadro 4400? If so what would be a good motherboard i could get (below $400 us).
I've looked for motherboards from tyan, asus and abit and all of them have pci-x or scsi which is no use for me (I'll use the sata 10k rpm hd) and they are too expensive.
I can wait 2 or 3 more months before purchasing the system, do you think the prices will drop by a lot in the next 2 months or so??
Any suggestion will be helpfull.

My current specs:
amd 3200
quadro fx500
1gb pc3200

Just found this on highend3d....
"....Xeon and Opteron costs about the same right now. but remember there is a price drop on Feb 13th on Xeon, Opteron always follow that in few days....."

Can anyone confirm this??

GeForce 6800pci-e -> Quadro FX 4400

This kind of softmod should be avalible soon... ( It strongly depends on Unwinder from www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com) ) !

:thumbsup:

I would personally recommend Opterons (wait for a while, like previous lad said, the prices will drop)

Good luck!
