Title: Hook
Name: Marcel Laverdet
Country: France
Software: Carrara, Rhino, ZBrush

hello!... I've always love the peter pan tales, and the myth of the litle boy who didn't want to grow... with his "alter ego", hook; of course the disney movie has been a great moment, but also the spielberg movie, which goes on a more symbolic approach... here, it's just a (I hope) funny picture, with an old hook... modelled and textured in zbrush2, (background modelled in nurbs, by rhino), everything renderd in carrara 4 pro...

Nicely done! Well executed piece. The details are well done and the concept is smart. Really nice to see a Carrara image here, too!

One thing I'd suggest, though, is to take a little extra time to make his accessories unique. The repetition of the corkscrews and knive ends is pretty apparent.

Also, Hook's pose is pretty static, as if he is posing for a painting, and those sorts of poses tend to look dead. He's very straight-backed and looks as if he's saying "look at my spoon!" Instead, maybe he can be leaning forward a bit and twist his wrist a bit so the spoon concavity isn't facing the camera as much.
As a twist, maybe you should put a little unconscious Tinker Bell in his spoon, with her arms and legs draped over the sides of the spoon. Just a thought, although I know that'd be a lot of work.

Anyway, it's looking very nice as is, I just think it can be pushed a bit more to give it additional power.
Keep posting those Carrara pix!

Gentrifier.

i have one question though, is the white cloth on the shirt and the arms 100% 3d? cause it looks way too realistic. however it doesnt match the red cloth in lighting/shadows. they look pasted together in their intersections. was it added in post later?

great modelling skills, but I think the hook shouldn't hide the face : it's a bit disturbing. The two arms position could be more demonstrative. Sorry it's hard to be more precise, because it's a question of trying different positions...:) Let's try in french :
Peut-être que la position serait plus naturelle si par ex, il posait sa cuiller sur la table, et appuyait son visage sur son crochet...
Bye.

Thank you really for your feedback, and kind comments!!!... I should like to post wires, but, as people practicing zbrush knows, it's not very useful, as the mesh is so "crowded"... I'll post a "white" step of the mesh... for the clothe, I'm afraid to be really simple, and tricky: the "fabrics" are applied as texture, on rather simple geometry, especially on the part around the hands... the main dificult task has been to paint a texture masking the "golden" parts from the velvet, to change the shiness and reflection...

oh, I did often, in 3 or 2d, pictures on hook, and peter pan... soime for books, most of them for me... here is an oil on canvas, which has about 10 years, and getting hand on it when making "clean" in my work area gave me the idea of a new hook...

I've forgotten to post the little sketch I did for that character... at the beginning, I was intended to go to a sort of "melancholic" cartoon style... in 3d, I lost (sob!) some of the things I like in the drawing, but on another hand go on a more "humor" picture...

C'est Magnifique!

The only thing I might add is a touch of rim light on his right side for
a touch more separation from the background. The fact that he emerges from
the darkness is a nice touch though.

Nice sculpt on the face, wonderful detail!

So so sweet, celmar. I disagree with the people who want to re-pose him in any way, the expression and slouch and guarded posture are perfect as is. What I WOULD do is look into giving the shelves behind him a more descript texture.

Marcel ,
I am simply amazed at the realistic look of the flesh tones that you are able to
create. I don't know if it is possible but can you share your techniques, at least
"throw us a bone" we are all in awe of your style and ease at creating such
beautiful works. By the way I understand that Hook is old and quite possibly had
another run-in with the crocadile, hence the loss of his other hand. One more
thing to those balking at the repitition of the knives and such, how many of you
have just one in your collection.

Keep up the good work!

celmar
02-12-2005, 06:46 AM
thank you really for all your comments!!! for the skin, I'try to answer, but there is nothing really "tricky", or unusual: on the joined picture, there is first the color map; I never use an "off pink" to texture, but parts of photo, like here on the forehead, and painting parts, but withj various tones; a good "trick" is to use first part of a photo, say on the nose, then paint around, matching the photo element; it's done in a painter 3d, (projection master, in zbrush), in frontal projection, so it's possible to paint in a very natural way, without any deformation; 2- the colored map is translatred in grey tones, and I add more "clear" and more contrast; then the only trick, but I have tell ity a lot on the forum: I apply in photoshop a texture "grain photo", not many many, but rather perceptible; it's going, in the bump channel, to give more "vibrations", the bump has of course a littlme relation ship with also eyebros, and so on; 3- a mask map is done, here for the "handkerchoef hat", and for the lips; of course, I put the two on one map, here, but there was two map mask: one for the hat, in the bump channel, and one for the lips, in the shine and reflection channel, to give a little "difference" with the reest of the skin; on Hook, it's obviously just a little difference, but on a pretty girl, more difference between lips and skin, for exemple... and that's all, folks!...
