I’m throwing my hat in, sounds like a great challenge. Initially I was thinking of the huge eruption / inferno type effect but as I looked at more pictures I changed my approach slightly.

The first scene, that of the eruption features a small plane flying over a cityscape with a large eruption below that engulfs the plane (attached image). The second scene is the city picture with huge plumes of smoke billowing down the street. Car explosion (hmmm)? Third scene is at the bus station, bus explosion. The last two scenes show a car submerged in lava and an aerial view of the city. Too much?

All in all it’s a fairly tall order to complete but will hopefully be an interesting overall piece (if done).

I have completed the first scene and added the two images below. The first is a still as the plane goes over the volcano and the second is when it emerges. Love to hear any feedback. No colour correction or editing at this stage.

Have decided to go for the full bells and whistles effect with the big car crash scene. This is scene two and will show the two cars seen in the final image (4) crash into each other flip and careen upside down off screen. Hopefully not too ambitious.
(1)The original image

(2)Removed all unwanted elements

(3) Matched camera position and added new cars. 4 omni lights + GI

(4) Ready to animate image with new car elements.

Yeah! Not too sure of that. I’ve been working through a new portfolio and kind of got side tracked into this. Hopefully the end result will look OK and fit into the reel. Still rendering out scene one, another night of whirrrrrrrr in the background.

Great work!

Your shot reminds me a lot of Mt Vesuvius eruption in 1944.

Here is a link to some great reference photos

Dantes Peak is on TV tonight. I never thought I would be excited to see this again but there you go. Will be back working on the scene over the weekend and will post some clips soon.

Finally got back to working on this. This is a shot from scene two with the car crash. Still working on the pyroclastic cloud but should be finished soon. I will post up the quicktime once it renders out.

Wow. Large explosion!
The smoke trail behind the car seems a bit long; but I suppose I can't really get a good feel of how fast it's moving from the stills.

good work,
i like the idea with the pyroclastic cloud, i´m also trying such an effect.
But i have one comment. The cloud has such a force that the cars in front of it must be blown away shortly before the cloud reaches them. I think then it looks more dramatic. And you have a lot of cars in the Street.
What about the buildiings, will they be destroyed ?

Here is the scene one sample. I'm not too sure about this. I think there is something too cartoony looking about it. It might be lighting or the clouds might need a bit more work. All suggestions would be extremely useful and appreciated.

As for scene two the clouds move very fast and explosions that I included just got enveloped by the cloud too quickly. Cars exploding and being thrown around sounds like a great idea. See can I work it in. I will hopefully have scene two soon.

Cheers and thanks for all the comments.

let me give some comments,
the plane fly´s above the cloud´s. it has a bright lighting coming from above, but the lighting of the dark clouds doesn´t fit. they are too dark.
There is no reaction in the cloud movement when the plane comes out. I think the plane needs a little smoke trail when it passes the clouds, or the clouds must be bouncing around at the collision point.
The plane is flying over a hot, reddish lavaeruption and suddenly passes through a grey ashcloud. Don´t you think that´s a little confusing ?

I hope my comments could help.
Andreas

I completly agree with your points. I'm going to re-work the scene if I get a bit of time. The grey clouds looked like a volcanic cloud from far away but maybe not that close up. Will stick to the firey clouds. Thanks for the comments.

Scene two nearly done, all 2.3 seconds of it. There is a screenshot in the above post. Here is the link to the quicktime.

Hi,
I think you should work on speed of the silver car, when he start spinning after the hit by other car. And the spinning of the green car is quite strange (i think its to fast and to mechanics) also he stops to immediately.

I hope that I'm not too critiq you ;) Sorry If I did it

Regards, Pepe.

my only complaint is the grey specks in the forground. Some of them dont seem to be moving at all and the rest i only see on screen for one frame. It would be nice if they had some motion blur too

I agree with Pepe99 about the car movements. After the collision the silver car seems to start rotating slowly and then spin faster as it heads for the post. It seems to me like it should be at maximum rotation right after impact and slow down from there. Over all very good work! The cloud is great!

Outside of what already has been said, I would stop the particle trail coming from the silver car(the one from it skidding at the beginning). The solver car also seems to be spinning at a faster than normal pace throughout the whole thing.

Well here it is in all its shortness. I won’t be too critical of it but it could have worked out allot better. Off for a few days now so can forget about big explosions for a while. For anyone who has BBC television there is a documentary on “the biggest volcano ever”. A fictional piece on what would happen if an eruption occurred in a city. 9pm BBC 2, should be good. It should be on Discovery at a later stage.

Amazing entries from everyone, great fun to be part of it all. Here is my final entry. Thanks to RobertoOrtiz for the footage.

Great job.

What software did you use for the P cloud? It looks great.
I am trying to find which software is best for this type of effect. Lightwave isn't giving me the results I want (probably need more practice with HV's but they take forever to render anyway.)

yeah ...what app or plugin did you use for smoke fromthe volcano shots?
