What's the most realistic way to create a basic furry carpet? SLA? Need this for my school project........And havenīt got a clue......

Well theres the fakeing way...using the Chanlum shader (see earlier post "Chanlum Strikes again" or download the BGS Hair plugin. Both are free...but the hair plug creates enourmous amounts of polys!

if you're talking really furry then your best bet is to get shave & haircut which will do ultra realistic fur.

if that's beyond your means then i suggest the free glfur which does some fur type things (though it's a bit ropey)

the other thing you have to ask yourself is how long do you want the scene to take to render... for instance you can get a very nice effect by making a polygon shape for the carpet, then layer it very thinly (for the example render i used ditools to duplicate the carpet along a path 20 times) then make a texture with 3dnoise in the alpha, make the texture quite small, but stretched out vertically (on the y axis). put a little banj in the luminosity channel (just colour it to match your carpet colour). put this colour on the group of layers (not individually on any object itself, just on the group) then up the ray depth in the render options panel. and render with shadows on. this will take some time to render but the results should be pretty nice, especially if you're animating and the camera is moving.

if you just want a quick fix. use a high bump map using noise that's scaled down really small... dont have an specular colour on your carpet, put in a bit of noise into the colour channel, again make the noise pretty small, and put that on your carpet, that should do the trick ok to fake it... but be careful as this can look like linoleum, or cork, or some other hard surface unless your'e really careful... and bumpmaps often look flat once you move the camera.

anyhow here's a couple of examples

the first one is of layered carpet... woudl look pretty darn nice in a moving shot.

the second one is of the standard single texture way.

of and of course you can use tdem to make lots and lots of hairs and render that way using solidsplines... but that would take even longer!!!

i hope that some of this helps you!

hmmm... well i can't really render out a movie cos of the time it would take up on my machine (this is a really slow method and a really slow machine) although the results would be nice... i'll see if i can attach the c4d file here and you can animate the camera as you please and render out... you will need ditools for this btw.

thanks for this mdme_sadie i'm a new user to c4d and working through the tutorials (damn...) and i fancied making a carpet for the room tutorial, but copped out and put a ikea style wood floor...so i might go back and have a go at a carpet.
cheers

heres my 2 pence - this is what i use for my mog standard cheapo exhibiton style throw away after the show carpet! bump map using bhodiNUT tiles. then a second material with a bit of noise in it with the colour in it. Not very furry I know - but it does the trick - and quick to render
