packages:
xsi softimage
alias maya
diskreet 3dsmax

stand alone:
alias motionbuilder
messiah: animate

it doesnŽt really matter which software you learn. the differences are just a few features or ways to do something, nothing big. the more important is that you learn the principles of animating (anticipation,...) about theese things youŽll find many links in this forum.

as far as i know maya is the most used tool in the industrie, but everybody will say you that this does not matter in any way - "its the artist not the tool"-thingy :)

i would recomend you explore the animation part in the software package you use for modeling (if its not silo/wings/..) and then animate, animate and animate

Like laber says... it doesn't really matter which software you use. I once heard from someone that it's easier (i.e. faster) to train someone how to use a software than the art of animation. The former may take weeks (days if you are fast learner) while the latter take years, if not... decades to master.

A lot of movie companies use MAYA such as Ice Age, Spiderman, Final Fantasy, Lord of the Rings, etc. I think even Blizzard who make games are beginning to use MAYA now. They used to use 3ds MAX. They still use it now though.

hope this helps... remember, learn the art, not the technical knowledge (but enough of it to get your animations done though).

i think they used a couple of different types of software in their pipeline.
I wouldn't be surprised if they used maya for the hair type fx.
