Well I'm putting my other car (link in signature) on hold to work on this one. It will be very similar to the other one. In fact, it's like a upgraded or improved version of it.

I've finished the spline cage 2 days ago and began working on the front.
Here is the cage, but it's not too easy to see, so for some I showed a side only.

As you can see, I've kept the main lines on the other car. This time, the cockpit is even more closer to the front and the driver's visibility should be greater. The backlights are way smaller and the side intakes are more sharp.

Thats all till the next update. I did no fancy render, no lights or white planes.

And the cage :

OK, here is another update.

Added the deployable spoiler, back center brake light and grill, and started the work on the side intakes...

And I found a fabulous color witch I think will look superb when proprely rendered.

It looks awsome!!
Just the roof piece is alot to round and plain.

Great design, I like it !

Haver

Thanks to you two.

About the roof, I dont think it's too round since the windshield part is pretty strait from a profile view.

As for the plainess, I'll probably add a small roof, but the interior will surely make it look good.

First renders with a light setup.

I've almost finished the side too.

Awaiting critiques and comments.

i like your car, the modeling looks good and theres no errors i can see on the mesh. however i dont like the way the roof is with the windows going how it is but it is your design. do you intend to add a rollcage on in the inside incase the car flips over?

Haver
02-02-2005, 02:55 PM
Thx for the reply M@DM@X

The roof is not actually modeled yet, I only changed some polygons materials to give a better idea of the cockpit.

However, I am aware than in case of a roll or flip over, the roof would be very fragile.

So I'll work on that.

Finally I've cut the door.

The next step is to refine the back. (I'll probably make it less wide a little)

Ok here is a shot with wheels on. There arestill mesh errors that I am aware of...

So how are those rims? Scrap of keep?

It's spelled Saleen. The car it kinda looks like is the S7. But then most mid engine cars look similar. I'm kind of interested how are you going to work the area under the Hood/bonnet over the wheel wells? I understand the desire to have that as one piece to give it a clean look, and it could definately be done that way, but in a real production car they would probably have a smaller openning for the bonnet as it would be easier the manufacture.

Haver
02-22-2005, 08:48 PM
Well, look at the Koenigsegg. It's hood open like mine, excet that my head lights don't go up with it.

So I am still waiting comments on the wheels and maybe the lower brake intake (is it too big?)

Cyberdemon
02-22-2005, 09:05 PM
The back brake duct definatley can be smaller. It also looks more stuck on then part of the cars design. Perhaps it should blend into the lower skirt a bit more.

At high speeds (when brake ducts become necessary) you want a smaller hole to increase the velocity of the air flowing through the duct.

ExtraNoise
02-22-2005, 09:14 PM
The car is beautiful!

I'd suggest changing the wheels afterall, because, to me, they're not flowing with the car. If you can find a way to add some arcs in there (perhaps at the base of the spokes), then I think they would be perfect.

And yes, it looks similar to a Saleen S7 (Salinee? lol - I think I'll start calling them that ;) ), but not so much that it's not an original design.

Is that windscreen one sheet? I'd hate to get a crack in it and have to replace it!

Haver
02-23-2005, 01:17 AM
Cyberdemon : ok, I'll reduce the size of the brake intake. As for blending it with the car, I was thinking that too. Maybe make another curve to join the body. But I think that it's nice with a different material.

ExtraNoise : I'll try to design some new wheels. As for the windshield, It will probably stay one piece, even if it would be expensive to produce, but then a car like that would be expensive too, not? I've tought of a system to prvent sun blind during sunny days. Like a gas based tint of some kind...

Here is a render of the unfinished back that is more conform to the initial scetch. That material on the bumper is very bad...

the rims and stance of the car really let it down. tuck them tires up inside those wheel wells and make those side intakes real close to the ground like they are trying to suck up the pavement. Perhaps some more agressive rims and a more detailed tire would also help to anchor it to the ground. The perception of a vehicle is greatly linked to its stance, it makes all the difference in the world. Other than that, the only other thing is the headlight seem rather bland. Good job so far, keep it up :)

Haver
03-10-2005, 05:42 PM
Still need to change the rims... and other things...

And I just noticed that I forgot to add a meshsmooth modifier to the front bumper, thats why it looks edgy.

My last two renders were very ugly, and are uglier the more I look at them.

So I decided to reshape the cockpit a bit, since no one could have entered it anyway the way it was.

Now the car is 1.28 meters high at its max, but because of the roof roundness, its a little less over the head (but at least, a driver can fit now).

I changed the back lights too, witch you cant see here. I'll render more angles soon.

Here is a dark grey one with more of the door rubbers and stuff done. Unfortunatly, the interiortexture looks very bad (the blue under the roof pillars).

So, how do you like that color?

Looking really good. I have tryied splines one time but didnt liked them. Keep up the good job!

Haver
03-19-2005, 03:57 PM
LiOn: I dont know if red would work, since I would loose the contrast with the back lights. Maybe when these are better defined (modeled bulbs and all), I will try a red one.

Pavel Lazarov : Thanks. The spline cage was used only as a guide to place my polys. No spline was actually converted to geometry (solid object). I started using this method to save time, as it helps visualise the final model. This car here has just a few design elements different from the initial spline cage. I suggest this method to everyone.

Here is a hires render witch rendered all night (6 hours :D).

nice car man. That black version looks sick, but i think a red color would match better

thx1138
04-02-2005, 06:57 AM
No no no, please not red. It'll make it look like a Ferarri. Black is good though :D

But dude, you have some serious good design skills. One of the best I've seen in a long time. Keep it up

Haver
04-03-2005, 01:00 AM
Thanks to all for the kind words.:)

sabaman : I must agree with your comment. Its mainly the cockpit witch resemble to the zonda one. The reason of this resemblance is that I used the same process to create it, i.e. the door windows are part of a sphere so that they can slide perfectly in the door.

I also wanted the place the driver and passenger to closer to the front possible to give space for the back engine.

twisztdauthority : This is a dark grey, I did not post solid black because it is difficult to see the details of a black car, considering that my car shader is not that good. As for the red, I said I would try it in my last post but I did not (forgot...) so I will try it and post it here.

thx1138 : I agree about the red. Like I said, I will try it but I doubt that it will look good. And thanks alot for the comment on my design skills. That is my principal interest rather than modelling/rendering skills. But to create a 3d model, all must go together.

Progress is a bit slow theses days, but I am working on the front and back bumper. I am also trying to find a definitive headlight design. I also worked on new rims, but I will wait to post theses.

Wow this is car is good, considering it is your own design that's quite marvelous.
I like it. I'm quite new at this, you are getting nice reflections on the "roof glass" when the car is on a side perspective, at the top half of the glass. Can you tell us more about the enviroment? backgrounds? the glass is reflecting all? or it has a spherical map? reflection falloffs?... thanks in advance, i'm very curious.

Haver
04-04-2005, 03:24 PM
Here is a red render I did last night.

It does not look too good, the red is not dark enough. It's mostly because of the white background and the paint itself reflects too much.

I tried a new headlight setup here, but I finally dont like it that much so I'll continue working on that.

amartinez1660 : the glass is the standard glass material from Max. It has a fresnel-falloff reflection, no map. The environment is just a white color, and the large floor that curves upward to seal the image.

This car does rock!:buttrock:

One crit: the hard-edged lights dont fit the cars overall design. But I think that de final light will be as good, as the car overall. :)

Haver
04-04-2005, 07:31 PM
Well I did a test on thoses headlights to match the back lights. There are some problem with theses ones though, like the fact that they are very close to the ground, lower than some cars fog lights :D. But now that I am thinking of it, I liked the dome like feature of the previous lights, so I'll play with them a bit more.

Hey hey,

This is looking good. Now for that interior and wheels..etc. I also think, that your design would be slick if you lowered the "roof" of the car to match the lines on the car a bit more. More towards the back than front, but hey, that's my opinion. The model is looking pretty clean. How do you like the spline setup for hardsurface stuff?

Keep it up.

Haver
04-21-2005, 05:17 PM
Hey Digital_crystal, here is a lower sire render. Maybe from this angle the roof looks less high. The fact is that the roof is not that high, 1.17 meters. Its about the lowest a car can be to fit a driver in. Even lambos are about 1.2 meters high. As for the cockpit being so close to the front, that was the design idea from the start, since the car is not long (4.2 meters) and its a mid-engine setup. I also wanted the cockpit to end fast so that the engine would not be too loud inside, unlike some mid-engines were the driver is separated from the engine by a small glass. I've never driven such car but I just guess that the engine sounds loud.

""How do you like the spline setup for hardsurface stuff?"" - I am sorry I don't understand this phrase.

So now only some fixes to the trunk, and I'll try to design a nice set of rims. Oh and I'll finish thoses side mirrors.

Awesome car!
Reminds me of Lotus Elise and that car ferari had (which works on a alternate type of fuel) :)
Waiting for the finished product :)

DigitalCrystal
04-21-2005, 11:14 PM
I can def see what you're saying. I guess it was just the angle the other renders were in, or maybe I was just tired. The first car I ever bought was a mid-engine car, man that fiero was fun :)

http://www.digitalcrystaldesigns.com/fiero/new/Picture%20004.jpg

Mine was the red one in the middle. Either way, noise wasn't too bad, it made your seat rumble a bit. But that was also on a 1987 2.8L v6. I'm sure your engine would be a real smooth DOHC for this model, but anyway, the fiero is set up very similarly to the way you've got your model. At least the cab is--separated from the engine bay unlike a new ferrari. With a car so small, you also have to look at the size of the displacement of your engine as well. If it's as small as a lotus, you won't have a huge 3.5 liter V8 in there. Maybe you could ;). With that said, I don't think you'll have as much to worry about as far as noise goes, but def good to see that you're taking the driver into consideration when developing the design, it brings style and functionality together.. making a more realistic model.

Keep it up! Btw, I like the seams, very clean

Haver
04-22-2005, 02:40 AM
Evilshadow : what was that ferrari car? I've never heard of it.
The finished product... I'll try to do that fast, but I dont want to rush the interior too much and sacrifice its quality.

Digital : I think I have enough space for a resonable engine to put in there. The back is pretty high and wide. More space than the fiero or lotus elise anyway. And fitting the driver in there made me change the design so many times. But the one I got now seems to be ok.

By the way, was that car fast? Yours does not look like the ones from where I live, could be a different year though.

DigitalCrystal
04-22-2005, 03:32 AM
By the way, was that car fast? Yours does not look like the ones from where I live, could be a different year though.

Those are the GT fastback models, you may be refering to the coupe. Fast? Nah, not really, it was a 2.8l v6, push-rod motor. Putting out 140hp from the block, I don't even know how much was transfered to the wheels. But the car wasn't that heavy, so it made it fun to drive. Plus we all had 5 speed trannys.. well, the white one had a 4 speed. My buddy, the yellow car's owner, and I were out on an empty highway one afternoon and well, tested the limits of his car. Since the speedo maxs at 120 mph, we had to calculate the overall speed based off his final drive ratio, tire circumference, and rpms... we topped out at 139 mph, at that point, drag and weight played a major factor, that and we ran out of RPMs. But still, that's not too bad considering how small the v6 is. The rear wheel mid-engine setup was very fun, but give it too much gas around a corner and the whole backend wanted to switch ends with the front, made for some interesting exits from parking lots !

***I don't recommend testing your car's limits. Very dangerous, we both agreed after we did the test that it was pretty stupid.***
