I think this sort of thing is asked a lot, but I've looked at every topic about it and cannot get it to work because the explainations are a tad vague. I'm just trying to add a glow to my lamp.

The best solution I found was:

I'll now describe how the recreate each glow in max using simple methods.
As for the material of the LED itself you could use a Raytrace material with self-illumination and a Falloff map set to Fresnel in the reflection slot.
Glow 1:
- Create a small omni light and place it inside the LED.
- Let the light cast shadows and set it's colour to the colour of the LED.
- Make sure the LED's material isn't 2-sided.
- Done. What happens is that objects and materials only have one side when you first create them, the light just doesn't 'see' the LED object when it's inside of it.

But I don't understand it. It mentions an LED but what exactly is it and where? I tried just making a box and putting raytrace and fresnel on but that didn't work.

Has anyone seen any source files or anything to fully describe how to do it? Ive got a blur on my window using effects blur and lume in some way. I dont really understand the material ID part, yet it worked. You can only put numbers in object ID but how do you know an objects number ID?

Sorry for so many questions. Im used to mapping levels where you just choose "lens flare" and put it over the light :)

Any help appreciated

I render my glowing objects in a separate pass and do the glow in post.

Doesn't know how this helps you, but I've found it to be a method with a lot less hassle than trying to do it in Max.

I would do it like that apart from I need to animate in scenes so I cant really do it. I think Ill just not have lamps glowing as if you are stood near a lamp it doesnt glow that much, its just a photo captures the glow effect. I just wish I understood the material ID though too.

ok so this is the best I can do so far, its my first lighting scene of this type. Im trying to make a dark scene you see. Dark and moody, perhaps with a horror feel. Hence the dodgy carpet. Obviously I havent made the interior yet, just a lamp. Anyone got any tips?
