View Full Version : CPU gurus I call upon thee...
uncon 01-26-2005, 07:38 PM I got ahold of a cool processor from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-175&depa=0
It's a 3.0E Ghz P4, 800Mhz FSB, and for the life of me I don't know what the 'E' in 3.0>E< Ghz is. I am trying to match up a Motherboard for this CPU and I am a little confused about getting the right one.
I have this MSI motherboard but it's not working out for me:

Does anybody know if these match up? Maybe my problem is somewhere else, but I can't find the 3.0EGhz in the tested section of the motherboard docs.

The 'E' is for Extreme Edition, or something to that effect. The only difference between the E line of P4s and regular P4s, as far as I know, is that the E line has a much larger cache.
Both the chip and the mobo are socket 478. And the mobo is intended for Intel CPUs. So you should be fine. I haven't heard of the 'extreme edition' P4s having any problems with P4 mobos.
What problem are you having with your MSI board anyway?

Thanks, for the quick response, I'll owe you a pint. My problem occurs when I turn on the computer, the CPU fan spins but nothing else happens. My primary guess is that my ancient noisey power supply is failing and I need a better one. I'll order one today and see if that helps me out, everything besides the CPU and work in my old machine but I think the power supply needs to be exchanged anyway.
I built my old machine from scratch but I've been out of the loop since then and my old machine is an AMD 1900 if that gives you any clue as to how long ago that was. It's tough trying to catch up on this stuff!

Actually the "E" denotes a Prescott version:
800Mhz Front side bus witha 1MB L2 Cache
The Extreme Editions have:
800Mhz FSB and a 2MB L2 Cache
The mobo description states it is Prescott ready so I don't see why there would be a problem you might want to take it to a shop (small shops are better than the big places) and see if they will test out the board and CPU. If theres a problem with either you can send it back to newegg for a replacement

The E refers to the P4 being one of the first Prescott core. It differs from my 3.0"C" P4, which was the last of the Northwood cores for the P4s.
Your P4 is the Prescott made as a transition between the 478 pin mobos and the mobos that uses LGA (large grid array) 775 for the newest Prescott P4s. Thus, your P4 should work in just about any of the 478 pin P4 motherboards, IIRC. You might have to make some adjustments in the core voitage via the BIOS, but I think you'll be fine. It's just that your CPU will run hotter than the Northwood P4s.
I recommand you get an Intel 875 motherboard for your P4, if you don't mind using an AGP video card. Here's a good one for good price:

The only thing missing is a Firewire on board, but you can always add those on the PCI bus.
If you'd rather use a PCIe videocard, then here's one for you:

Out of stock until 1/29 though.
edit: I didn't read far enough to see that you've already tried it with an Intel 865 mobo. Probably the reason it didn't work is that the core volatge might have to be nudge up via BIOS. Try that first before taking it back.

So that's what the Presscott stuff is all about, good to know. That second motherboard looks pretty cool, PCIe and built in Raid a nice package. I just don't know about abandoning my perfectly good FX5200 AGP card quite yet.
I just ordered a new Power Supply (There was a nice thread here a little while back that had some good tips) and a case, since my old one is a little beaten up, and I wanted a few extra fans because this P4 is supposed to be pretty hot. When that stuff gets here I'll try it out and let you know how it goes, if I still can't get it to work I'll take all my new parts to a good local store I know and make it their problem.
You guys rock :buttrock: thanks for the help.

I got my new power supply and case this weekend and finally got my computer running! Many thanks to those who helped me out on this thread I really apreaciate the help. The new computer is over twice as fast as the old one and my render times proove it. I am going to order myself a pair of DDR400 RAM sticks and call the case closed.
You people rock :buttrock: , thanks a million
