WHAT IS A MATTE PAINTING:

The idea is to try to create a Visual Effects shot from source file provided in the thread. A matte painting is a method that has existed almost from the beginning of cinema to enhance environments. A painting was used to enhance or expand a scene. If this sounds suspiciously like a "set extension" is because it is the same thing.

Some famous matte paintings can be seen in movies like "Gone with the Wind", "The Planet of the Apes", "North by Northwest", "20 Leagues under the sea", "Mary Poppins", "The Birds", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Star Wars".

More recently digital version of the technique can be seen in movies like "Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars Prequels and The Matrix Trilogy"

For more information about this technique go here:

http://www.matteworld.com/projects/siggraph01.html (http://www.matteworld.com/projects/siggraph01.html)
http://www.voxfilm.com/mattepaint1.html (http://www.voxfilm.com/mattepaint1.html)

THE Micro-CHALLENGE:

Imagine that you are painting a VFX painting for a movie.... but you only have ONE DAY.

For this micro-challenge the source file will be either a locked video or a still image. And you can use other elements (photographed, rendered and/or painted) to enhance the image. But NO WIP can be posted on the thread, only final images.

For a thread where this challenge is discussed in detail, go to this >>thread<<. (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=192283)

Depending on the input I will try to do more of these now and then.
I am looking forward to your input.

What is Kids Week?
Kids week is an effort to get more kids interested in drawing.

This week we will post topics suitable and aimed to kids between 5 -13 years. The idea is that if you blokes know a kid who likes art, to encourage them to draw,
and post this week.

Also get them to give us their ideas for topics...

To keep things safe;

Kids should only post with the current account of an adult who has been posting with us for a while (parent or relative).

Otherwise it is business as usual...

I am sure we have great childrens book illustrators in our ranks.
Have fun. Post as usual, but remember your target audience.

__________________________________________________ _________________

These are the rules:

* FXWARS: If you post a video, please encode the vide in Quicktime format.
* You have to use the foundation image/video that is presented in the thread.
* You may use other photographic elements to enhance the final image
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

Rock on! A matte for kid's week using my pic of a giant sequoia in New Zealand! This treehouse one ought to really be fun! Can't wait to get home to my Wacom and give it a go! For those of you familiar with NZ, this tree that splits into 2 is right outside the entrance to the Waitomo Caves - home of ga-zillions of glow worms. :)

Well, I think matte painting might be a little beyond my kids' attention span right now, but they'll get back into it tomorrow.

Here's my first try at matte wars. I'd love to live in a house like this.
Photoshop, Wacom, 1hr 15min.

lol it was the first thing I thought about doing when I saw the source image, but I doubt I would have executed it so effectively . Well Done.

This is my second matte painting attempt. Hope you guys you like it. Additional photos from google. Photoshop: 2.5 hours

EDIT: I auto adjusted levels in photoshop and it gave my matte a shade of cool colors. I kinda like it, but I'm not sure which is better.

Wow Thany, really nice. That's what I think of when I think matte painting. And the edit you made is an improvement. The only crit I had was what you fixed already.

J_Grieve, I like the way your house is sitting right on top of the trunks and the tree is starting to grow back up around it.

my first matte painting! the original tree is in there, i promise :D

Its the big one on the right side of the frame. I got a bunch of other resorce photos online. I think i used about 8 photos. Used the clone stamp a lot too. Took me about 2 and a half hours to finish.

Nice work from everyone!

CodeNothing: Looks awesome! I think I'd rather live in your treehouse since it's bigger, but mine has a better view. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Kelli: I count 6 as well, but I'm guessing the two birds were together from one image?

J_Grieve: lol, I love the idea.

crazy3dman: Awesome work on your matte. It looks real! However, I would not want to live in there, way too small for me.

HAHA, well yours does have a better view, but mine is harder to find! No jehovah's witnes's knocking on my door, No anoying girl scouts selling cookies... wait a minute. I love those cookies. dang!

My first matte. I really enjoyed making it. Photoshop 7, about 3 hours I think. I tried some mood changes, like sunrise or night. But that didn't work out, so I posted this version, without any mood changes. hope ya'll like it.

Great work everybody!

Not the greatest, but it was fun.

this is my first matte too, it took 1:10h using photoshop and some googled images... the original idea was to paint a cartoony beaver (it's kids week, so cartoons should be permited even in a matte painting...), but at the end I got a bit lazy and just pasted a real one there...

Sorry for cutting down your beautiful tree, robin :D

@RobertoOrtiz: I thought that maybe for this week's votation we could include a special category for the "best little artist" or something similar...:arteest: regarding our new outcoming artists...

Well ... I'm not going to try and explain matte paintings and how they are created to children who still believe that Emily Elizabeth and Clifford the Big Red Dog are real.

Here's my daughter's treehouse ....

Hmm.. I am wondering if we can honour ALL of our young artists - make them all winners (and happy :) ). Just my two cents
