First of all, she's very sexy and painted really good:thumbsup:

For the background I would paint a futuristic city I gues, the girl standing in an apartment on a really high level of a scyscraper, maybe in the corner on the gound a fragment of someone she just shot (still smoke coming from the gun), she's looking trough a window.
Trough the window you see star wars-like speaders flying in the distance and these neonsigns everywhere.

This comes to my mind when I'm looking at it, maybe because she reminds me little of the girl in 'the fifth element', I hope I could be of some help.
Anyway I'm looking forward to see what you do with it

Perhaps shes looking for some thing to ware? Just a thought. She is looking good, But I dont think Im digging the gun that much, no offense what so ever. Perhaps a more slicker, smooth, rounded gun would fit the charater more. Just some ideas. Looking good!

The image seems to be kind of sci fi/fantasy cliche. Sexy woman in high heels, too little clothes, carrying a gun, with absolutely no action going on.

Maybe dropping some of the cheesecake and adding a focus closer to the viewer, like the person she shot, or something sneaking up on her while her attention is diverted by what's going on in the background.

The above is right -- it is a cliche, but sometimes it doesn't take much to turn a cliche on its head. You might think about ways you can subvert the cliche.

I agree with a previous poster about the gun. It looks like she's going to use that thing to put price tags on soup cans.

Otherwise it looks pretty sharp.

STEP 1 (moved)
Work in progress. I want to finish this one for Expose 3. Comments and ideas very welcome. The background is still missing.

Thanks.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I still have to correct some anatomical issues and soften some parts. I will probably change the gun, too. Looks too heavy for her, you're right.
I don't know about the city in the background...perhaps too much distraction, but I'll give it a try. But I think the idea of a guy lying dead next to her could work. Perhaps a whole buch of guys. Perhaps some black humour, without looking macabre.

About the cliche...well, that was what I was aiming for, hehe...but perhaps I can do better than that and put a story in it.

Thanks again.

Rudeone

Well I think the gun looks cool, why would it be to heavy for her?

You want to put in some black humour, what about this?: you see an arm of this dead person on the floor holding money in his hand, also there's some bills sticking out of the girls pantys.
You probably figured where I'm going, she's a stripper who just shot an anoying customer.

saltydogdesign
01-26-2005, 02:40 PM
I don't think the gun is necessarily too heavy, it just looks like a price gun. Too blocky.

Why don't you surround her with piles of dead, skimpily dressed women? That would flip the cliche over.

nice rendering so far, but I totally agree with the cliche thing, way too overdone.

Imo, get rid of the gun, and replace it with a giant sex toy.

Paint another futuristic babe with gun in the background. Or paint hundreds of them and put Waldo in there somewhere so we can find him.

Great start! I like the figure, but I think her boots look knida flat around the heals. I am a girl and if your going to give her a girl a gun I think she should have a good size, large gun!

I like your space opera challange too!

STEP 2 Update 2005.01.28
Cleaned the figure a bit more and worked on the colors. Changed the boots definition and made a more slick silvery gun. I think I will leave the figure like this for now, and go on to do the background. I'm aiming for hundreds of guys/aliens/other babes (don't know yet) lying around dead after she "cleaned" them.

She's hot man!, I like the gun, altough I didn't dislike the other gun.

Don't know why she just shot a whole bunch of enemies, but why did she do it in her underwear?
Don't get me wrong, I think you should leave her dressed like this, but it's kinda weird to go and shoot all these badasses wearing almost nothing, or did they all just invaded her apartment?

Great start :applause:

A skyscraper glass bay thats a good idea... with a big city behind.. maybe some cool landscape behind... or make this scene inside a space station with a look at a planet.... endless possibilities here :bounce:

Hey, your work looks great so far. I'm looking forward to seeing it at a more advanced stage. It will really start to gel when you have background elements as those can significantly influence the lighting on the figure. What you have so far is great. Keep up the good work!

OK firstly awesome work! i love it! (!) one serious crit though - is her head too small? maybe its just me - it could be because she has 'short' hair but it looks a little small...

I agree totally about what people have been saying abuot the gun and the new version is a grand improvement - very slick!

Keep it up!

u shoulda made the gun like "noisy cricket" from MIB then.

the big gun had cool sturdy design with smooth metallic look.

i say this little pistol is ridiculous! it looks small and silly.

and that big gun wasn't even that big . .. it could even have
a blowdryer attached to it for added usability... with max setting
the blowdryer could double as a flamethrower ...

anywho .. just like all the smallest sidearms - except the noisy cricket-
dat one just looks pitiful

i am offended and demand sacrifice

STEP 3 Update 2005.01.30
Decided to make some looser changes and leave it a bit sketchy for the time being. I will also do a very simple background, going for the classic pin-up look where the main focus is the figure with sometimes no background at all.

WOW!! Great progress so far andreasrocha! Your painting technique is impressive. :) And interesting angle too. Like others have mentioned in this thread, a background of a city skyline would be a nice direction to go. :) Looking forward to more updates!

I have a request if you do not mind. I was wondering if you could help me out with painting skin. I am new to it and I wanted to try painting people for my Expose 3 entry. Even if you could direct me to some valueable tutorials or resources it would be greatly smiled upon :) IF you like you can reply in my thread, or MSG me. Thanks!

STEP 4 Update 2005.02.01
Changed the boots again but they still need detailing. Added a quick rust backdrop just to spice things up a bit. I will not do an outdoor scene like some of you are suggesting, because I wanted to keep the illumination indoors for a more intimate look. Perhaps I will do a narrow window to her left or something. But I am not sure yet. Pin-ups rarely have detailed backgrounds.

great work, i don't think it needs a detailed background... but... you should put somthing on the wall, why is she standing so close to a wall, just looking at it? maybe a seam running down it, to make it seem a locked portal she is trying open.

STEP 5 Update 2005.02.02
Did a lot of refining on the girl and started to sketch out a background. Now I have some lighting/color inconsistencies that I will have to correct. Thanks for the comments...

STEP 6 (2005.03.02)

Decided to make a simple white background to emphasis her figure. Also changed the darkest and lightest areas of her body.

Dunno, I think it's step -1... You can just change step 5 a bit- make her stayng in front of a door (like someone just rang the bell and she's going to see who's there). But you decide... You also touched the shouldes, I think they were just fine in step 5.

shyamshriram
02-03-2005, 11:53 AM
Cool work :)
r u going to put some ammo on her body, i mean bullets or something like that? is the outfit is final? i like her pose...u can break the symmetry by changing the right hand action..just my thought.
nice work though, keep it up buddy !

STEP 7 (2005.04.02)

Thanks shyamshriram. I actually like both hands swinging in the same direction. I think it underlines the movement of her body. Regarding the bullets...I introduced a kind of belt for the bullets, but I don't know if it really works. But I think I will give her more small clothing details, like you suggested.

TZax...you're right, I went back a bit with my last post, but the fact is that I want to give relevance to the girl only, and I don't think there could be a story with a girl in such a pose, with those clothes on and two guns. The only reason I can find to justify her being there is that she is posing for the viewer to satisfy some kind of fantasy.

I defined the bone and muscle structure a bit more in parts that were too blurry in the last one. I also made the image more crisp by defining form with lines and occasional hatches, mainly inspired by Drew Struzan's technique. The background (another one) is just temporary until I find an interesting texture to put in the back.

I know you want to do a pin-up pic , but nevertheless :

how about putting a metallic wall in front of the gal..metal
door maybe, and her reflection would show in that ...
this way you could paint her from the fron too and add a lot
of coollness :)
You could also put a window in front of her, and a dark night
city beyond that , and again her reflection in the window.. ?

the wall/door window or city could all be very simple..

Yo Andi, how ya doing?
That chick is hot! But I have some suggestions:
First, I think long legs have more impact. Her legs are a bit too thick and the thighs could be more elongated. Step 4 looks nicer in this aspect, because the edge of the boots fades in the background.
The hair colour is great, but the hair needs some more definition. The hair strands and texture can be a highlight of the pin-up, as its colour already commands attention.
The bullet thing could be a strap across the shoulder, and should be a bit loose, not tight, because she'd want to move it around.
For props, you could add those bullet "cylinders" (the ones that get thrown out by machine-guns?) strewn on the floor, and gun smoke.
The back and shoulders are awesome!
Keep up the good work!

STEP 8 (2005.02.05)

Added more character by turning her head and showing her face. I also followed DrFX's advice (thanks man!).

The bullit cilinders and the gunsmoke are a nice detail, but I don't really care for her head, it looks good, but I really liked it the way it was.
If you're really going to stick with this, I would suggest adding more hair at the side of the face

I like her more withouth her head turned. much more.
very nice job on the body. Make sure it don't become too smooth, thats why I like the last image the most (exept for her head)

I agree with the other comments. The picture is better with the head facing away from the viewer. The second gun is a nice touch.

STEP 9 (2005.02.07)

Dropped the face like you all suggested (thanks) and the hair still needs detailing. Refined some parts of her body. Dropped the bulletshells, because I think they were too distracting in this kind of scene. And started addinga very light city background, which is really just sketched at the moment.

Thanks for the comments.

Hey Andi, looking good! I have an idea for a background: How about a fallen enemy? A monster or a mecha, or some other nasty fallen at her feet. It could give the pic some perspective depth and provide a story to it. You were right about the bullets, most revolvers don't "drop" bullets, anyway! But I think she still needs skinnier legs.
Good work and good luck!

I really liked what you had in step 5, the composition was really nice, a strong vertical feel with a nicely silhouetted figure and great colors, in the "doorway" you could draw a fallen enemy or some war zone in the distance or cross fire or something... also the smoking guns look like they might be hot and would burn her legs ;). Oh and btw I dont think they need to be any skinnier heh but thats just my taste :)
Cheers.

STEP 10(2005.02.08)

I reviewed all my steps and came to the conclusion that step 6 nailed my intention and that things were getting a bit out of hand for me, trying to figure out what to put in the background. I went for a giant red headlight right in front of her. There is no story, no meaning...just an attempt to make something "sexy" through the combination of tight clothes, red, steel and curves. I probably will only be adding small details from now on, and I consider it almost done. Thanks for the comments. Even if I didn't implement some of the things you suggested, I sure took them into account and they made me think about other things.

Looks really sweet, I also really like the composition of step 5. Has a nice feel to it and really frames the cahracter. Never the less i think the headlight looks cool but as you said doesnt really have a story???
