Hi guys Roberto here.

As you know I am trying to get off the ground the FXWARS section of the CGTALK forum.

The idea is that people are supposed to produce VFX shots from in a month and a 1/2.
At the end people vote for what they think is the best vfx shot.
The Challenges vary from week to week. So far we have done 3 successful challenges that have been completely synthetic in nature:
CgTalk:FXWars! Roller Coaster Challenge:3
CgTalk:FXWars! Snow Avalanche Challenge:2
CgTalk:FXWars! Catapult! (Trebuchet) Challenge:1 (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=180291&highlight=avalanche)

This week we started doing the first FXWARS micro challenge that uses live action footage,

CgTalk:FXWars! A Volcano in Downtown Challenge:4 (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=203990)

As you might image, we are in dire need of VFX artists, for this project.
And if you need live action footage it is already included in the thread.

Depending on the success of this challenge we might do more future fxwars challenges that use live action footage.

So if you feel you have the chops to do a full matte painting, join us.

Thanks,

-Roberto

Hmm. I'm still unclear what a matte is.. is it just some real imagery with some painted aspect to achieve a look that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve naturally?

that sounds about right, wyvern. I was curious too, though so I googled it and found this:

"What is a Matte Painting?- Matte Paintings are remotely detailed works of art, designed to fool the eye into an illusion of time and place
to which live action elements are composited into a scene. "

WHAT IS A MATTE PAINTING:

A matte painting is a method that has existed almost from the beginning of cinema to enhance environments. A painting was used to enhance or expand a scene. If this sounds suspiciously like a "set extension" is because it is the same thing.

Some famous matte paintings can be seen in movies like "Gone with the Wind", "The Planet of the Apes", "North by Northwest", "20 Leagues under the sea", "Mary Poppins", "The Birds", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Star Wars".

More recently digital version of the technique can be seen in movies like "Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars Prequels and The Matrix Trilogy"
