Hi all,

Today, we're proud to announce Machineflesh: the book (http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/machineflesh/), our first CG Challenge book documenting the CG Challenges! The Machineflesh book consists of 50% step-by-step 'making of' tutorial content by the winners of the Challenge, and the other half is a gallery of artwork from other Challengers.

The Machineflesh book is published to the same high quality standards that Ballistic Publishing titles share, making them highly coveted books celebrating the talents of digital artists.

In November 2004, an overwhelming 99% of Machineflesh challengers voted yes to creating Challenge books. Contestants wanted a lasting record of the Challenges and also wanted to contribute to continuing the CG Challenges.

The Challenges are huge and will continue to remain free to enter for everyone and now the books will make the finalists and winners even more famous! We don’t get anything from the sponsors to run the challenges; all the prizes go directly to winners. Sale of Challenge books will allow us to keep funding and running the CG Challenges for free, in addition to celebrating the talents of artists who participated in the Challenge.

The CG Challenges are a community building activity. The Challenge books are being priced as low as possible so that everyone can afford a copy. In addition, there will be significant discounts offered to all Challenge participants. Anyone who gets an image in the book will also be sent a free copy of the book. Furthermore, proceeds will go towards continuing to run the CG Challenges for free to everyone.

Support the CG Challenges, and keep them free for everyone to enter. Purchase your copy at:

>> Machineflesh: the book << (http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/machineflesh/)

//NOTE: If you entered the MachineFlesh or Grand Space Opera Challenge - details of the Challenger Discount are being emailed to you - if you do not receive this email, please mail info@ballisticpublishing.com for more information.

Best,

Leo

That's really great. If it's anything like the Oddworld Inhabitants book, I'll be sure to order me a copy. Congrats to all the participants in that challenge as well. I checked it out, and just like space opera, want to vote for all of them. Super news.

Why don't you just save the images from the competition website and use that as a wallpaper. I think they are quite high res aren't they?

That's great news! I was really impressed by the quality of the Oddworld Book, this should be equally nice.
Just to make sure I've got this straight: People can get the discount if they participated in the Grand Space Opera challenge even if they weren't a part of the MachineFlesh challenge? Really? If so... cool!

I just ordered the book... to get the discount as a challenge entrant all you have to do is type in your userID and password and it's done!

Sweet... They only have a soft cover version though... still, it's going to be great!

One question I have is on who's work appears in the book:
Is it just the winners and honorable mentions or is it based off, like the top 25 entries of each catagory?

>> Greg Petchkovsky's piece

Here's two layouts from Greg's tutorial. Not all pages are shown in the page gallery. As mentioned, all winners and runner ups have tutorials in the book:

http://leonard.cgcommunity.com/machineflesh6.jpg

http://leonard.cgcommunity.com/machineflesh5.jpg

>> How much does it cost?

It is ~$33 (US dollars) / $44 (Australian dollars).

>>They only have a soft cover version though

Yup that's right. Challenge books are one standard format to keep the cost as low as possible for everyone - hence why we can offer such huge (20%) discounts for all Challengers!

>>who's work appears in the book? Top 25 of each category?

Tutorials: All winners and runner up's (50% of the book)
Page gallery: Honourable mentions and print worthy entries selected by the editors (50% of the book)
We try to fit as many images as possible into the book, but we do retain a quality standard for publishing images. Definitely more than 25 in each category.

(this is from the email that the participants of GSO recieved):

Answers to a bunch of questions:

Emails have gone out to Machine Flesh Challenge entrants telling them how to get their 20% discount -- if you entered the Machine Flesh challenge and have not recieved your email contact helen@ballisticmedia.net

Emails have gone out to Grand Space Opera challenge entrants explaining the process for their book. Once the Grand Space Opera book is on the press entrants will be sent details for ordering thir challenge book at a discount -- this will be just a few weeks after the judging is finished.

Machine Flesh book is already printed and will be on a ship to Adelaide next week. We should have them in about another 4 weeks to send to people. We do not charge credit cards untill the day the book is sent to you. If you ordered any other books at the same time they will ship out immediatly.

The Page Gallery will be updated soon to include all pages in the book.

The Pricing page will be updated tomorrow to include Machine Flesh pricing

We have kept the Challenge books as affordable as possible and still just enough to fund challenges. The price is: (Australian dollar price is fixed, other prices vary with exchange rates)
Australian 44
USA 34
EUR 26
GBP 18
... Challenge entrants get a further 20% discount on their Challenge book and any other Ballsitic Books they order at the same time -- if they order quickly.

Everybody that got an image in the book will be sent one free book. If you want more you will have to place an order for them.

The Grand Spage Opera book will be ready to go to press within just a few weeks of the close of judging.

When we are sure that the Challenges are running regularly with 4 a year -- would people be interested in bigger discounts for subscriptions to all the challenge books?

I think that sould answer everyones questions for now.

BTW -- the book looks awesome. Congradulations to everyone that participated in the challenge and all those who got their work into print!

Mark

the number of pages is 96.. :)
the book idea is very cool, not only as a way to show off the collection of great works, but also as a promotion to spawn interest in the contests and this cgtalk itself.
very cool.
