Hm..
The specular is too big, and the writings should 'light up'... not be darker then the rest.
and it should be more reflective. :)

down with the specularity, more reflection. replace the noise in the bump with a more scratchy map instead, and turn the bump down a little

It got much better now. well if an elvish ring can't get any scratches, then I think your ring i pretty much finished :-)
Hmm.. make them a little more reflective, the one from the movies are alot reflective (sometimes)
Nice ring, keep it up

I think the gold still looks wrong. it doesn't look like gold.. maybe it would look better with the light from a different angle.. it still looks a bit too matte to me.. and a bit the wrong tint.
Also, as far as I can remember, the elven rings couldn't be scratched..
They can't be scratched when hardened but what about while they were made? :)
Anyway, I think the rings need something to reflect and sharp highlights. The best way to get such highlights in metal is not to use the speculars (in fact take them all the way down) but instead reflect a real lightsource. Build a self-illuminating white box or sphere which can be reflected. You can even render out a separate pass with all materials black an no environment map except for that box, then in Photoshop use this as a mask to bloom or glow the highlights.

Thanks for the comments guys!! :)
Stecki: no i dont believe there was two rings, i just did it like this for compositional reasons.
Wiro: thanks for the excellent tips, but i cant seem to achieve that effect with the boxes... right now it just looks like its reflecting white boxes :P hmmm ill have to play around with that a little more
thanks!

Well there is only one ring for thy great lord Sauron, but many others were made, for the Elves, Dwarves, men, etc. But not the same ones. I'm not a geek!...no!...really!

aye, 9 for the kings of men (now the Nazgul), 7 for the dwarves (3 eaten by dragons and the rest "safe"), 3 for the elves. So with the one ring, that's 20 in all. Doesn't say what they look like tho. Mind you I'm only on the second book. Only another couple of hundred pages and I shall be in Two Towers territory!

"three rings for the elven kings under the sky..."
i'm a geek too, i read the whole trilogy in a week;)
Unfortunately I can't remember details as I'm a freak and when i get really into a book i keep skipping pages to see what happens faster.
Anyway, waiting for updates!
