Very nice, the picture shows your influences. It has a very '60s look to it as well.

Refine the texture mapping on the rock surface and it will be perfect, at the moment it has a lot of streching and doesn't lead into the background too well. Some soft orange lighting would help intergrate the models with the background as well.

All the best.

Great image I like the robots they are a hybrid between a more modern curved design int he shoulders and the general classical robot look as seen in Robby the Robot from the 'Forbidden Planet' that's the first thing they reminded me of actually.

Well done.

Yep its all looking great and if you are working towards an animation that will be even better, its hard to crit unless we know what you are aiming for and where you are taking the project.

Good luck

Hi,
I just wanted to let u in on the storyline and let u know more about my project.

The year is 2175. Catholicism has taken over America as the true New World Order. A separist group of free-thinkers called The Dot have culminated from the countries of Japan, Spain, and Germany. They have sworn not to join the New America and have vowed war. Holy War!

I have been working on this for 3 years and have over 13 models built including the ones I have shown. I am currently texturing most of my models and have only shown roughs. I am using Maya, Houdini, Terragen, After Effects, Photoshop, and Avid. I would like to pitch this idea to a studio. Maybe a 30 min slot on Sci-Fi Ch. or FOX.

Please feel free to tell me what I can do 2 improve...Just don't give some lame ass critique like that square=Adam!

Peace 2 All!

hey robot 9000, i think the idea and models r cool. esp. the 60's feel to it!, but i must agree with adam that it is a bit cheesey, but in a cool way, ....actually the concepts rock:applause: , maybe work on the texturing a bit more!!!, i esp like the "i can see clearly" one!!!!, all in all nice stuff!

DAMN! Somebody call Pizza Hut!
Well, super cheesey was not what I am going for...I want a look like SF3D (look it up on google=Kow Yokayama Rocks) and maybe more experimental looking 3D. I do not want to do what everyone else is doing. Oh well, as long as some of u dig it =IT IS ALL GOOD!

Your avatar looks like it's a drawn image, can we see some of the concept art for this project?

I like the style of the robots.

The texture on the rocks is wrong and confuses us as to the scale of the characters: are they stepping over mini dunes or are they taller than mountains?

KingNothing
09-13-2002, 05:52 PM
Ok, here's some crit. The texturing on your rocks needs a lot of work, and the rocks are not to scale with the robots, at least from this camera angle. There's a bit of segmentation on the front of the ship, you might want to play with the smoothing groups. Other than that, it's nice work

robot9000
09-14-2002, 02:29 PM
TANKS 4 THE CRIT=I shall adjust the dunes (small dunes) and try playing with the texture. The Dot assault robots are a little larger than a normal human. My Final Project professor also said I had a problem with this idea of scale.

umm robot the sole reson for the existence of a forum like this is to get feed back if some one doesnt like what you have done dont get super defensive and start geting mad if your gona do that why post???

Mr. A=I know this, sir. I critique here also... but if I do not like something I am not a jerk and say "You suck, I hate your work!"(I would rather say nothing at all if it is detrimental to the subject). Look around for my posts, Mr. A, they are positive. Ummm, you didn't say anything about my work. So, are u throwing me a crit as a human? I hope your next post is about my work and
not about my ability to handle a poor ass critique!
Have A Nice Day!

Very interesting. Robot, I really dig the work you are presenting. The ideas and concepts are indeed very original. Those two members that are questioning your replys and not mentioning your work, are obviously confused. This forum is for advice and critiques on work submitted. Let us not lose that focus.

Thanks.

Hello Robot9000 !!! thanks for your comments in my post, although I prefer girls than men I don't have "las muchachas" haa haaa....

I really like they style that you achieved in the models, looks like retro-modern robots of the 40 ?? maybe ???

I think the style in the modeling are too much cool for this render and texturing technique, I will love to see how you accomplish that....

I think that this is looking very early 90's CG unfortunately. Here is what is influencing this:

What I think the main reason for this is, is the lighting. Everything looks very flat and and undetailed. Work on dithering the shadows and adding color to both the lights and the shadows themselves.
Also, your texturing could be improved as well. The materials look like not much UV mapping was done. Like it is a general map, rather than a specific skin. I hope that is clear enough.
Your background buildings also seem like they aren't beveled. If they aren't they should be. If they are, maybe they should be beveld more, because the edges look unrealisticaly sharp.
The poses of the characters need to be a lot more dynamic. Everything looks very stiff and is lacking emotion. Watch old cartoons and see how exagerated the poses are. Even in a non-cartoony piece such as yours, exageration is still a necessity.

Good Luck.

Mr. neb666=BOOM TANKS!

Mr. Emiliano=Muchas Gracias!(BOOM BOOM TANKS!)

Mr. JFrench=OKAY! I will try harder on some of those aspects!
I appreciate the crit! I would say that robot9000 is more of a modeler than an animator. Errr...that building you talk of is actually a warship. ANYWAY=TANKS! I am watching cartoons as I write this=GATCHAMAN!

COOL image!!! , I saw the sketches UAAAAAAAAA !!!! ... too much work it´s awaiting you hombreeeee !!!! ... I like the style and I was watching those japanese toys that you were talking, pretty cool....
I think the beveling it´s a must in any edge, if there is not will look odd to the eye... and in the contrary a small bevel will add naturality in any form.

I don't know what look are you looking for.

I like the different style.:)

I appreciated your comments! I am a big fan of all those shows and the genres you have listed! I am rendering a new machine that u might like!
keep watching!

Mr. Emiliano=Muchas Gracias pt. II
Hey bro, thank you for the advice. I am trying to get an experimental look.
I neither want a finished or super realistic look. I want a melding of the two with a little cel-shader action thrown in the mix. I just want the viewer to have fun and dig sci-fi because that is what heavily influences me.

I loved Ma.K models ....

http://www.q-net.net.au/~nipngnwm/images/contest/rene-teasers/STYX-left.jpg

What do you think about texturing like real life ?? this real photo is not hard to do with texturing, just bumps, difusse and color maps....

Of course this will not have that "special touch" that you are looking...

2D shaders......mmmmmhhhh.... It´s to subjective the choice of the texturing......it depends so much in individual tastes....

Te espera mucho trabajo hermano !!!! jaaa jaaa

hey Robot 9000, On the whole I love the work ! I'm not a 3D expert by any means but I have been doing digital graphics for a while now, so for what its worth here goes. It looks like you put some time in on the storyline which is important to any good animation .Too often you see great animation marred by a weak ill-conceived story, very sad. As far as specifics go, my favorites are :
1. "setting sun" nice drama here, the water is well rendered. A bit more contrast overall would really make this sparkle.
2. "Mans best friend" is a really nice composition. I like the color schemes you're using throughout. I think all the models are way cool, they bring back to mind the classic illustrations of the fifties that graced the covers of Galaxy science fiction, Fate magazine, Amazing stories etc...
3. "War Tanks" Love the style, even if it is different than the others. The positive and negative shapes work well.
4. "Kill or be Killed" has good detail, great color and design. Although I tend to agree with some of the other critics, the stretching and the size of the texture on the rocks is distracting, try different ways of mapping, beveling and lighting to get the most out of your images.
Overall I'm liking the futuristic/retro look. The ships, I can see clearly, are all very fun images. Keep up the great work. "Small Brain of Drex" is bound to be a big hit.

1. All textures aside, your modeling is unique and very stylized
in the traditional 50's meets 2002 ...I like this. Improvements
on atmosphere are my biggest quips! Add some volumetric lighting and things will start to manifest for the better.
2. Your story is kick ass! I also feel that with any animation that
the story is most important. I think you have a handle on this
Luis. Do not deter from this.
3. It is appparent that you are a modeler and should continue this venture. My favorite image is "I CAN SEE CLEARLY". It evokes
some kind of inner realization.
4. I have visited this forum before and agree with your thoughts on critiquing your work and not player hating!
5. When will this animation be done? I must see this! When is the next post?
Good Luck and May The Hand of God B With U!

I really like it. I think it goes with your story and style (in my opinion).
Maybe you don´t have to go further looking more realistic shader (like more bump or diffuse, noise, scratchs, etc).
You will have (again in my opinion) to put a "style test scene" with some objects, characters and atmosphere all together and the looks that YOU LIKE BEST....
Then I would render the SAME SCENE with the diferents surfaces, shaders and ambients that you tryied.... cycle them and choose !!!! go on !!!
NICE WORK BROOOO !!!!!

One little thing, the tips of the barrels look a little odd on the cannons, not sure why??
Maybe that texture is tiling really wierd the diameter?

Lo robo, its nice and quiet over here even though we are just starting the rainy season :)

After looking at the tank again that could probably use some subtle bump maps to apply some surface details to the flat plating. it would also be intresting to see some other angle of the two wheeled bike!?
