View Full Version : rigging erros!
matrix220 01-24-2005, 08:17 AM Good morning everybody.
I am working on my first character and i created a rig throu a tutorial. Since i followed the tutorial step by step, i come to an error.
The entire character deforms in ways i dont want it to. for example.
the armour, depending on the arm movement deforms itselfe, as well the clothes.
i have no idea why that happens.
Would you be able to help me? I want to say too, that i am not done with the rig, but i wanted to show you the picutes of my error
Here are 2 pictures i have taken for you to see.

Also the tutorial mentiones that i have to rest the rotation (so that the rotation will be reset to 0, without moving the bone) i have lightwave 8. and "he" sayes it should be shift-r, but it's not the right one. I also have checked the keybord shortcutes and cant find it.
what should i do?

i dont know what tutorial you are referring to. but it seems that you have problems with your weight maps.
my initial suggestion is to first remove all weight maps and then add them back again on a more general basis. or, try not to use weight maps yet. either way, the problem might be that some weight maps are applied on the wrong points. be sure that the bones are assigned their proper weight map, too.
an overall tip is to use weight maps generally first.. meaning apply weight maps to big portions, like the whole leg (left and right separately), body, whole arms, head, etc... then later, if you need it, apply specific weight maps.
also, i suggest deleting the geometry under the pants. if it's not supposed to be seen, you dont need it there.

I've never been able to get rotation-resetting to work. I think it was fixed in 8 but I'm not sure... Look at the tutorials on my site to learn about reset bones.
My 3D Stuff page (http://www.carm3d.net/3D_Stuff.htm)
what should i do?
Check all your bones have weight maps assigned to them ( spreadsheet is good for this )
the first one looks to me as if you Havn't got you weight map set correctly
like your left leg weight maps are on you Right leg or both leg havn't got there weights set correctly
maybe you have some bones in the left leg with no weight maps setting at all and these bones are working in Lightwave default way, Basic falloff controling what points the bones effect

the second one the leg & chest errors
Look like you havn't got a weight map on the skin under the armor so it's being effect Again by a bone without a weight map assigned to it Could be anywhere I can't tell without see it move myself but make sure the skin under teh armor has teh same weight map as teh armor
OR what i do is if you will never see the skin under the armor Delete it to save any problems :)

Thanks!!
thanks for the help. i actualy dont have any weightmaps applyed to the character yet. in the tutorial he mentiones, that we will add them later. So it seems, all my worries will be gone as soon as some weightmaps will be inplace.
As you guys say, the problem on the foot will be solved to? COOL
I also would like to ask you guys something too. should i texture the character first before creating the rigg? or doesnt it matter?!
So, ill let you guys know if that will help. THANK you very much again,
cu later

I would add holding bone before I add weight maps you may not need them. Also if you are in LW8 just go to Setup>General>Bones and you can turn them on and off.

Matrix,
You may have a problem with bone cross influence, meaning you may have the legs too close together. Spread them further apart in more of a da vinci or spread eagle pose. Its certainly faster then messing with weight maps and youre not precluded from using weight maps if you feel you need them later. Also set your bone falloff to ^128. If youre having a problem with the arm pit collapsing create a 'rib' bone from one of the spine bones out towards the armpit. You can do it using the draw child bones tool and then hit the r (rest bones) key immediatly after. Remember to do this on frame 0.
Another thing I will mention that weight maps will not help much if you dont have the proper edge flow on your model. Modeling is also a big part of rigging if you want to get correct deformations. :)

Also the geometry under the armor isn't really need and could be part of the problems; but SplineGod(Larry) know better than me. There is no real purpose for this geometry is there? It is not seen.

It depends on how the armour needs to move. Sometimes its simpler to make the armour in pieces and parent the pieces to bones while letting the bones deform the parts the need deforming. With armour you can also hide things like arm objects that are seamless connected to the shoulders. :)

Thanks, i deleted the geometry underneath the clothes and the armor, and also i cleaned up my points in my character. Now when i move the leg for example, i DONT SEE ANY ERRORS anymore YEY!! so hapy about that!!
once again THANKS!!
