does anyone know how to do this. i've tried doing it as a material on a flat plane. but it does not give me the option of applying the material. i would love to know how to do this.

Example:

Make sure the "Show material in viewport" button is clicked in the material editor.

So it won’t let you apply the material with the drawings to the plane object?

You need a planar UVmap also. But that won't help if you can't apply a material, never heard such a thing:shrug:

OK firstly you need to verify that the material is applied to the plane. select the plane & make sure the our corners of the material sample turn white.

If you have the material applied, & you also have 'show map in viewport' switched on, the next thing I'd check is your driver settings. If the material bitmap size setting under your display driver preferences is set too high for your card, the material wont show in the viewport.
