View Full Version : bump map placement on 2 shader objects

i've got a shader projected on the front of my model, and a shader projected on the side. i used the relationship editor to make sure the textures showed only on the maps they were supposed to. now, i have 3 parts to each shader, which are both blinn. the color and specular maps both line up perfectly. however, i can't get my bump maps to line up on their respective UV's! bump maps don't show up in the relationship editor, i guess, so they don't line up. I tried connecting the uvchooser to the place2dtexture node, but that didn't work. i tried selecting the faces and then applying the bump to those faces. that also didn't work. any ideas on how to line up a bump map on a model with 2 shaders?

You can just make each shader share the same placement node for the bump right?

right now i've got the bump uvchooser.outUV of the color map connected to the place2dtexture.uvcoord of the bump map, the same way that uvchooser is connected to the uvcoord of the color map. theoretically, that would position the bump map on top of the color map, but it doesn't seem to work. how else would i connect the bump to the shaders?

Could you post an image of your shading network please?
You could also just duplicate the placement node thats driving your color and connect the duplicate to bump...? Unless I'm just totally missing what it is you're after.

stupid question: you've made sure the 2d placement nodes all say the same exact thing right?

ack, I've never had to mess with uv chooser before!?

yes they are the same. i even tried linking them all to the same texture placement node.

I'm assuming you have multiple UV sets here; I'm going to take a guess and say that your colour and spec maps aren't using the default set, which is the only set you can use bump maps on (up to version 4.0 anyway; I think this is resolved in 4.5). Try copying the set for the colour into the default set.

Sasquatch is right, the bump mapping only care about the default set.

yes...i've come to this problem just 3 days ago, and at the moment the bump map is related only to the first UV set...

sasquatch: thanks for the insight... how can i do this?

OK, first find out what the name of the default UV set is. If you haven't changed this, it should be map1. Next find and make current the UV set that you're using for the colour and spec textures (In the UV texture editor, select image>UV Sets> and then the correct UV set. As you select different sets, the UVs will update in the UV editor).

Next go to Edit Polygons>Texture>Copy Current UV Set options and type in the name of the default UV set you want to copy the UVs to. Hit apply. The UVs for the bump map should now match the Colour and Specular.

Hope this is clear enough

the front projection has been transferred to map1 and the bump lines up.... but what about my side bump map? does this method work with 2 bump maps?

Nope. You have to do all your bumps in the first UV set. It's rubbish, isn't it?

can you not just use the same place2dtexture for them both???

thanks for the info sasquatch.... back to the drawing board....
