The maya forum is getting stale IMHO. Hey mods what do you say we start spicing it up around here! Or if you guys see fit.. endow me with the powers of the mighty moderator.
:bounce:
Anyone got any ideas?
What about a sticky thread devoted to shaders?
Perhaps a maya specific challenge?

Peace.

What about a sticky thread devoted to shaders?
What kind of crap is that :D j/k

Or you could post a million threads of Maya rules!!!! to get the post count up :D j/k again

Rock on :buttrock:

Please elaborate. Examples?

I don't know, I probly went to far with that post.. I just feel this (maya)forum(not cg talk as a whole)doesn't really grab me and keep my attention like it used to. Most of the threads just seem to be rehashes of older ones.
It would be cool if we could bring mayans closer together. Like I said before, Maybe a maya specific challenge? Like here's a model.. how would you rig it? Or how would you texture it?

Or, subforums for specific maya related things to keep stuff more organized? i.e. texturing.. nurbs modelling.. poly modelling.. ..rendering specific(since that always seems to be such an issue) ..troubleshooting.. uh.. animation.. or rigging specific.

A sticky for shaders would be the shit.
That's funny coming from you visualboo considering you started one for max. Its just too bad shaders don't transfer through apps like a mesh will.

I'm just throwing around ideas. This is still a great place... how does it go.. if its not broke don't fix it?:p

Personally I come to CG talk to see what people are up to, and look at some cool art work. Where as questions about Maya are kinda secondary.

I mean I help out here and there but I think alot of people are really past the point of asking questions (after they read the manuals) and just get down to work. After all, after spending all day in Maya, last thing I want to do is read about it (unless there is something I want to learn).

I'd have to agree with grooveholmes... It is getting a little stale..
we need some more advanced techniques.. maybe a little "amature production tales" ... explaining a problem.. and the solutions used to accomplish daunting cg tasks within Maya.
On the side.. I would also like to see some more examples of node tweaking... little self-breakthroughs within the connection editor... One of my biggest pet peeves about the maya help on nodes and Function nodes...etc is that the help never tells you what each of these little attributes could be used for. (special uses for camera normals, point on surface, world vs. object matrix... and so on.... ) but still the forum is getting a little dull... maybe we could get special guests from the vfx industry to give a little tip...within the maya forum... and let us elaborate and ask questions about the reasons they came to a solution for a certain shot.

yeah, that's why I responded :D and yeah, that would be awesome if they did transfer that easily.

Can you say RIB? :D

oh well

Yeah I think the moderators should delete things that you can find in the manuals.....

hey dude,
no,you didn't go far with saying any thing...you are dead on.this place was buzzing some time back.
since maya is primarily meant for charachter animation i suggest we do something in that area.
and heres my heavily biased opinion "bruce lee"...we've all seen andrew and shannon ma's animation which was done in alias and maya 1... so that's our bench mark, refrences are dime a dozen(i can provide thousands).let's put our skills to the test.we'd cover modelling,texturing,skinning,trax...lets do this dudes.we can figure out the specifics in another thread.
in or out...vote. ;)

What about a Maya specific polygon porn section? hehe...

Seriously though, I agree that making the Maya section a little more detailed and section specific would be kick arse:)

PS - How bout a POLY a$$-cheek modeling section?
Or, Maybe a NURBOOBS section?

ah... nevermind...

I think a Maya specific challenge would be a great idea. That way we could all learn from eachother... things like how different people rig, or texture, etc, etc. Or... how bout the different ways people tweak their native maya renders.

Thats funny boomji,
I actually did a model of Bruce Lee over the summer for a modeling class. It came out horrible. Two days after the class was over, I saw some other guy's "Bruce" on here and I got so jealous. His really looked like him. But I never saw the animation you were talking about. And as for reference photos, I never found a REALLY GOOD profile shot of his face. If you could post one, I would really love to try and model him again.
I agree, on the staleness. Sometimes it is fun in this forum and I dont mind answering even what you could call stupid questions.
If people dont ask, they dont learn. One of the coolest things about MAYA is that there is almost always 3-5 different way of doing the same thing. Im not talking techniques, Im actually talking about actions. So somtimes, the books just arent good enough.

my $.02 worth, anyway.

At the risk of getting ragged on for submitting a rival site, I find for Maya-specific issues www.highend3d.com has the best Maya forums and user network. The critique forums there are very lacking, but I get responses and feedback in as little as a couple of hours.
