I'm still contemplating getting this as it seems very artist oriented. Now in Maya you can render directly in it, a final image per say. Can this be done in ZBrush? If so how, and can it be done in the demo? There is a demo?

There is a demo. Visit zbrush.com and check. It's old, though. v1.55b old (we're on 2.0 now), and you can't save your work. Which is fine for a demo, but just know that the interface has gotten a WHOLE lot more intuitive.

As for rendering... You have no idea. ZBrush is an illustrative tool -- you're making a painting, and you're using 3D to do it. Imagine if Maya's renderer was integrated into Photoshop so you could do all your post processing, then move the lights and have everything still work. It's kind of like that.

Not exactly, though. You have to cheat and get creative to make certain things work -- if you want highly accurate glass, for example, I have no idea how you'd go about that. In many ways, ZBrush's rendering isn't as powerful as something like Mental Ray. It's not a simulation, and it doesn't do raytracing. But it gives you a lot of control that a traditional renderer does not, because it approaches everything so differently.
