Title: Undersea Romance (nudity)
Name: Jason Chan
Country: United States
Software: Painter, Photoshop
I actually had this in sketch form in my sketchbook for a while. I've been wanting to paint it for some time now, but i had gotten sidetracked by the Grand Space Opera and school. Now that I'm finally done with the GSO and school hasn't quite started up yet, I had some time to finish it up.
I was playing with some Beauty and the Beast ideas in my sketchbook and it lead me to this image, which is like Beaty and the Beast meets The Little Mermaid.
I hope you guys like it.
Amazing!!! color, texture, lighting and composition are top notch.
It's freakin' awesome!!!

Fantastic Colors, love it
01-22-2005, 09:18 PM
Simply stunning. The underwater effect is really, really well done (and kind of discourage me of my own underwater piece i've been working on for a while.. :p). The details are magnificent...
The tail of the mermaid seems a bit short though, but i guess it doesn't really matter, or it's an illusion with the way her fin is spread.. The right arm of the.. "were-octopus" seems also off, where the elbow is positionned etc...
01-22-2005, 09:26 PM
beautiful, love the kiss and the colors.
01-22-2005, 09:33 PM

Perfect !! :)
01-22-2005, 09:50 PM
This is awesome, nice composition and colors, love the tentacles, id love it if the girl had some shimmer in the scales of her tail, but this is really lovely indeed! :applause:
01-22-2005, 09:54 PM
I have seen some of your posts on Concept Artist.org and have been impressed by your talent: especially your treatment of composition. This piece is no different; the movement in the piece is just great. The tentacles of the "man" and the lower body of the women flow into her hair, then the bubbles, and then the school of fish- with the light pulling your eye back to the two figures. The colors are very nice, but more importantly appropiate for the subject matter. Yes, most assurdly deserves 5 stars...:) Very nice!!
01-22-2005, 10:07 PM
Beautiful scene, giving good vibrations.
Congrats !
01-23-2005, 12:50 AM
Beautiful piece, especially like the depth and depiction of the fish and surface.
Coincidentally, snowed in here in CT and just finished watching Siderman2 with Dr Octipus.

nice colour composition :) it really makes the "waterfeeling"...
01-23-2005, 10:09 AM
Beautiful work. Love the color & lighting
01-23-2005, 10:11 AM
After watching your image for a while I started to gasp for a breath. Really nice underwater feeling you catched here. The only thing I would suggest, and of course its only my humble opinion... the light rays breaking through the water surface are a little bit weak. Maybe you could even enhance the impact of your image if there would be some strong light rays with a fallof so they start to vanish at the middle of the pic.
01-23-2005, 10:14 AM
Good painting, even better idea.
I've seen many monsters but for some reason I've never seen half-man, half-squid. Brilliant idea to move common fantasy theme to underwater. Instant freshness.
01-23-2005, 10:15 AM
Great concept also!! ;)
01-23-2005, 10:16 AM
Nice composition !
very detailed painting and good aquatic ambiance !

"has valiant heart nothing is not impossible !"
01-23-2005, 10:35 AM
very very good work
it is so beautiful
01-23-2005, 10:43 AM
the composition, and character poses are done really well.
i also like very much the color and atmosphere.
the only thing that disturbs me, and i think someone already wrote that,
is the right arm of the squid-man. some how its seems that the length and angle
of the right arm are a bit unaccurate.
but all in all- great job.
01-23-2005, 12:22 PM
This is very nice work. It's romantic, it's sexy, it's perfect!
01-23-2005, 12:39 PM

01-23-2005, 12:45 PM

I love this piece very much.
U've captured the emotion of the mermaid and the creature there very well.
and thumbs up for the environment.

01-23-2005, 02:27 PM
That is nothing short of stunning. The colours and composition is great!!
01-23-2005, 02:59 PM
Reminds me very much of Boris Vallejo's piece involving a mermaid and merman, pic here. http://fantasy.bratsk.net/cgi/show.cgi?Id=147
But otherwise nice stuff, disregarding arm weirdness.

My only crits would be, The mantupus guy's hair seems placed, rather than floating. Maybe he has some tough styling gel? Plus the right arm, as mentioned.
As said before the mermaid's scales need some work? Looks too much like polka dots rather than scales. Was this intentional, going for something other than scales?
The direction and flow of the painting are fantastic. I'm looking exactly were the focus is.
I love to see fantastical paintings, keep up the Great work.
01-23-2005, 04:10 PM
Vibration in my body.........nice kiss.......:bounce:
01-23-2005, 04:28 PM
Excellent; great composition and originality to the piece.
Worth 5 stars for sure. :)
01-23-2005, 04:32 PM

I have to say man that this piece is pretty moving, to me at least. Really great job on everything.. I wish I had thought of something like this :) (not that I could pull it off anyways)
01-24-2005, 02:56 AM
Beautiful. I love the tail on the mermaid. It's refreshingly different then the generic goldfish-like mermaid tail.
01-24-2005, 03:01 AM
 I am wondering for ur background designing man .:scream:
5 stars from me .
01-24-2005, 03:12 AM
This is great..the amount of perceptual depth...in contrast to everything you could have put in the piece, is extrordinary....I really enjoyed your Space Challenge image as well. Great work.
01-24-2005, 04:23 AM
This is very cool man! Nice atmosphere and it really captures the mood of Beuaty and Beast thing... ;) Very well done, http://www.cgtalk.com/images/rating/rating_5.gif from me dude!

firts of all congrats !! amazing work !
very nice colors, lighting and composition good balance..... i liked a lot ....
01-24-2005, 08:43 AM
Nice piece! The only crit I have is that her tail towards the end might not be flat enough--I think it'll look better flatter.
01-24-2005, 09:58 AM
Very beautiful and full of passion :)
The colors are breathaking - I am sorry for the fanboy post - but I can't think of anything to critique.
I browsed through your website and I am totally in awe - it's always good to find new inspirations. The idea to have rollovers show the sketch on some of your pieces is awesome.
01-24-2005, 11:01 AM
5 stars from me too ,excellent pic , dude.
really like the octopus/man design..don't remember
seeing many of those ... and this one looks so cool.

01-25-2005, 12:30 PM
Impressive & inspiring! 5 stars  .
01-25-2005, 12:46 PM
really nice!!
I am usually very strict with crits, but this is f**king great, man!
only one thing that I can see: the left hand of the octupus man should
maybe fold her skin a bit more since it looks like he's grabbing her real
tight.. Now it's kinda floating in front of her.. :)
Love this piece! :p
01-25-2005, 12:52 PM
I guess the scene becomes considerably less romantic when she deposits her eggs on a rock somewhere so that he can fertilize them... but maybe they could do that in a loving and romantic way?
01-25-2005, 01:55 PM
a fantasy of a passion alright...nice.
01-25-2005, 02:08 PM
All has been said about this masterpiece already, still i want to contribute by saying: 'wow...'
Absolutely stunning and very emotional.
01-25-2005, 04:05 PM
this is really very beautiful work. I usually don't care too much about 2D stuff, but this really moves me.
01-25-2005, 04:23 PM
Thanks for all of the feedback, guys - I really appreciate it! I'm really proud of this pic, too, and I'm glad that you guys like it. I'm currently in the middle of some projects right now, but if I get a chance later, I might take another pass at it and try to fix up the arm and scales, like you guys mentioned.
01-25-2005, 07:58 PM
wow nice work:eek:
01-25-2005, 08:26 PM
I love every aspect of the picture!
Good job!
01-25-2005, 09:05 PM
Your use of color, detail, and light is amazing.
Hmm, I wonder what thier kids would look like...
01-26-2005, 12:10 AM
Great imagination & sense of color!
It's the composition and colour that wins for me. Great work.
01-26-2005, 05:43 PM
Simply amazing image. The lighting is just sweet.
01-26-2005, 08:05 PM
Absolutely beautiful. The only thing i can criticize is the hair of the octopus (or octoman :) ) is his hair. I think it is too straight for underwater. It could be as "fluently" as the girl's hair, but truely this is the most outstanding work I've ever seen in 2D. Kepp on Creating man :applause:
01-26-2005, 09:12 PM
Cool painting, On the drawing side though I don't know if anyone mentioned it before but the man's Right Elbow seems awkward. I don't think it's proportionally wrong, maybe just the pose you picked is awckward his arms are symetrical he is like a clamp. Have at least one arm wrapped around her waist would make it a lot more sensuous without crossing the line. Otherwise the flow fo the whole thing is great...good stuff.
01-27-2005, 08:37 AM
WOW!! Very nice pic! I love it.
01-27-2005, 06:41 PM
nice work:thumbsup: I love every aspect of the picture~
01-28-2005, 08:21 PM
Wonderful piece of artwork!
01-29-2005, 11:28 AM
You had Awesome work in this challeng!
So Wish you success...and you had my vote.
01-30-2005, 04:54 PM
The shading and the colouring is amazing. Excellent work.
01-31-2005, 09:50 PM
WOW! This is true brilliance! Awesome work!
Jason Chan, you inspire me to do Fantasy paintings, but at the same time discourage me that I might not get to your level. You should be very busy, demanding top dollar and winning awards all the time! That is is all your other work is to this level.
Enter this in Spectrum, Epilogue.net and anything else that's related!
02-03-2005, 02:07 AM
I love your color and kiss, wow
02-04-2005, 01:14 AM
Thats really great art, whimsical and reminds me of those crazy Romance Novel type art. I love the atmosphere, and i think you really accomplished what you set out to portray!
02-05-2005, 09:46 AM
I like it very much
02-07-2005, 12:38 AM
This is a very nice peice. I could see this in a gallery. "Ocean Fever"
Have you seen the work of Josephine wall? http://www.courtyardofromance.com
I designed the site. And I really dig most of her work. Some elements of this peice remid me of some of the themes she explores. Love, Sex, Ocean and Fantasy.
02-08-2005, 01:56 AM
absolutely love it....one crit tho....the breasts dont look like they are underwater....i think they might be a little less perfectly settled, unless theyre fakies...beautiful image though, its on my desktop :)
02-08-2005, 05:40 PM
Wow. Just...wow. Their complex poses make for a very dynamic, flowing composition (though his right elbow looks a little low, but that might just be the effect of her hair) that keeps the eye moving through the flow of limbs and hair coral, yet always brings the focus back on the lovers. I really like the fact that your little mermaid is the largest splash of warm tones in the whole piece, focusing the eye in on her and giving us a starting place for our mad cycle of drooling over details.
02-13-2005, 11:39 AM
Breath-taking. The characters and the background are so gorgeously done. I love it.
02-14-2005, 08:03 AM
so beautful!
Amazing underwater atmosphere...
just, perhaps, a little bit larger "human" proportions ( arms ) of the octopuss-man... but it suppose he is an octopuss, so its perfect...
03-09-2005, 08:52 PM
Beautiful colours and a beautiful scene. Very romantic and peaceful. Sexy guy.
I like the atmosphere.
03-21-2005, 10:22 AM
perfect!!! it make me remember the boris
赞口不绝！！This is truly one of best pieces I ever seen.
02-21-2006, 03:40 PM
