The guy looks pretty scared :)
otacon
09-09-2002, 07:38 PM
not racing...but close. I started modeling on the ostrich...i dont think it looks like one right now, so i got to get a few reference pics. later.:wip:
otacon
09-09-2002, 10:06 PM
Heres a little more shaping up on the ostrich. Im not sure how im gonna do the feathers, any ideas?
otacon
09-09-2002, 11:49 PM
Ive changed my idea around a little. Think ostriches and greeks...;)
Too bad you changed your idea, I loved the ostriches X-Treme downhill one
Maybe you can show us more about that new idea?
Greeks
I can't imagine what you're doing...
otacon
09-12-2002, 11:52 PM
Thanks for the replies. I changed my idea so i could have more to model and more of a challenge. And i cant give away too much so youll just have to stay tuned ;). Ive been working a lot on this character...and all i have so far is his face, but im no good at doing chars so it will probobly take a while to make the whole guy...:D Any C&C welcome!

Greased up ostrich tacklin'?
i like the progress you have so far. one crit on the character is the upper lip looks a little strange - It's a little too puffy and round.
Let's see some more...

 Vaguely reminiscent of Joust....I like it!
otacon
09-13-2002, 08:21 PM
Thanks for replies. :D Joust was on my mind when i was thinking of my idea. But i didnt want to copy it too much....ive worked a bit more on the character, made him some armor...i hope to find some time this weekend to give this guy some arms and legs....:)
MikaelPersson
09-13-2002, 09:51 PM
I like that head. Maybe you should give him more visible eyelids. Right now the eyes look like they could pop out any moment.
otacon
09-14-2002, 12:59 AM
Will do Mikael. Thanks.
otacon
09-14-2002, 10:20 PM
I found some time to work on his arms....ill be adding more armor to them later on. Comments welcome.:D

09-14-2002, 10:27 PM
Are we seeing a roman here? That helmet look almost like the ones used in Asterix.
otacon
09-14-2002, 10:39 PM
Roman is correct!:applause: I think i might of said greek a little earlier on, but i was mistaken, he is a roman.

I started working on his legs....C&C always welcomed:D

your sketch started as a noral kid now hes a roman... was a more extreme sport crafted in the making?
otacon
09-15-2002, 04:42 PM
It started out with that idea, but i changed my mind because i wanted more to model and a different sport..and this idea gives me more to do....Lions eh?....havent thought about that one yet....:D

Nice ;)
but for the helmet... you should to try this one, or the other... they are reals romans helmet ;)
good luck
otacon
09-16-2002, 07:24 PM
Thanks for the replies. Erik: im making another guy, so ill try and make his helmet more roman like, and i might change around this guys a little too. I put my character in a quick pose just to see what it was going to look like...the ostrich still needs more deatail...and i noticed i made the guys hands too big, so i have to fix those too. :wip: im not at all good with bones so ill have to try and rig this guy the right way so it will look good....:D enough rambling....heres the pic...
MikaelPersson
09-16-2002, 09:05 PM
Starting to look good. The only thing I can crit right now is the feet of your ostritch. Now it looks like some kind of mix between a duck and bird feets. And I am not sure about ostritch feet but I think they look more like bird feet.
Anyway, you probably were on your way changing them anyway. Just thought I should point it out if you missed it.

The bird's head looks great, starting to get some cool character in there!
It's odd, the guy's head with the helmet on reminds me of the soldier from 50 Percent Grey. Must be a combination of the heavy eyelids and helmet.
Very cool!:D
Tweak on!:wip:
otacon
09-18-2002, 12:53 AM
Thanks for the replies!:D The head does kind of look like the fifty percent grey guy....but its not even half as good. Well im gonna take a break from all the organic modeling and start working on the arena. Im thinking a mix between the arena in the movie Spartacus and that one arena in Gladiator(not the coliseum).:)
otacon
09-19-2002, 07:32 PM
small update...

Jousting! Very cool model! You know, it kinda reminds me of the game Joust. Man that was a cool game!

It was a cool game.I was going to make jousting but i didnt want to copy off of the game.
MikaelPersson
09-19-2002, 08:58 PM
Now we have to see a pic with the ostritch having his head down in the sand. And something scary infront of him.
Maybe have lots(some?) feathers laying around on the ground.
otacon
09-21-2002, 10:49 PM
Thanks Mikael. I havent rigged the ostrich yet but im sure ill play around with him a bit when i get a chance.:D Heres some more work on the arena....ive only got one side with covering right now. Comments appreciated!
Your character and your ostrich looks fine, but the arena is even better !
Only one crit: in my opinion your man's feets has something weird... It's just an impression
By the way, great job !

this is really coming together.... the jousting bit is cool, and i'm really seeing all fitting together with the arena-which is looking great by the way
looking forward to your next post
YoGoLo
09-22-2002, 10:54 AM
verry cool !
hehe, I love the idea and the style.
I think that U should optimize the harness, some peices of metal could be better (behind the ostrich or near the seat)
The arena is nice too, as I have said U for the Beast of burden challenge, add some bump to the wood :) not all straights (and a little bump map when U'll do it)
just some opinion :)
keep it update I want to see the coming
MikaelPersson
09-22-2002, 11:42 AM
That is looking very nice otacon. Just a thought though. It looks like that arena will get very crowded too soon. Will be hard to make any interesting shoots out of your characters when only looking down at them.
otacon
09-22-2002, 06:29 PM
Wow! Thanks for all the comments!
Rot: Thanks. The gladiators shoes do look weird...ill work on them.;)
Virtuoso: Thanks!:D
funnydoodle: Ive thought about that some, and i still dont know what im going to do. If i do model a bunch of people ill need that good luck.
gwelty: Thanks. ill try to update today.
YoGoLo: Thanks! Ive actually taken the harness off altogether and am reworking it. Ill be adding bump and texture to the wood after i get the arena all modeled.
Mikael P.: Thanks. Ill try and fit a few more seats in somewhere.:D and im going to try out some different shots so i can try and get everyting in the scene.
Now i have to get back to work....:wip:
MikaelPersson
09-22-2002, 06:34 PM
Maybe you misunderstood me. I wasn´t speaking about the seats around the actual arena. But the arena itself. oh, well. You probably know what you are doing :).
otacon
09-22-2002, 11:22 PM
Sorry. I was mistaken....but it is a one on one battle so i think there should be enough room.;) And if not i can always enlarge it.
Heres the update on the arena....:wip:

Thanks. Ill try fixing the cloth so it doesnt look so cheap.:) Heres a bigger view so you can see it a little better.

Anyone have some ideas for some additions on the arena?...ill be glad to add them.:D Just wondering before i get back to work.

09-24-2002, 01:52 AM
Hey otacon....very nice arena you have there so far. Maybe some flags or a wind horn, something to make it look like an event....
Nice stuff, looking forward to your updates..
fetus
Very nice arena! I really love it, just can't wait to see the whole scene finished :)
I'd say you may want to add a "king's" spot, like a closed balcony where the king or the emperor goes to assist to the event... like Cesar's chair in Rome's arena.
gwelty
09-24-2002, 12:17 PM
"GLADIATOR II-Revenge of the Ostrich Men"
looks sharp, ...it does look tight down there though...i'm wordering about the scale of the whole thing
but looking sharp

09-24-2002, 04:22 PM
Dont know why but these clothes are crying for some kind of ornaments :wip: i like the arena a lot!
otacon
09-24-2002, 10:54 PM
Thanks for the comments! Ill try and make some kind of kings chair....thats a good idea. And ill add some more stuff to the gladiator too. My weak computer is getting pretty bogged down right now with all these polys in one scene, so its taking a while to adjust the scene the way i want to...especially with the character in there. But i got a few renders out so you could see the scale...theres some stuff i added to the arena too but i dont think you can see them in these pics.:D

simply excelent soo far
MikaelPersson
09-25-2002, 08:53 AM
This is looking great otacon. The scale problem I think is due to those sharpened poles around the arena. Right now they would have been taken from gigantic trees. I think that it would look and fit much better if you scaled their diameter down to half the current one. But keep the height.
Nice mood. Would be really fun to see some animation out of this.
otacon
09-26-2002, 12:48 AM
I fixed those poles around the arena...but i changed it a lot. I tried to cut down on the polys by not having so many.:surprised And i added some more stuff to the whole thing including a special area for the rich folk and maybe a king...ill put up a few pics with some different views...:D Comments always welcomed!:wavey:

09-26-2002, 12:50 AM

Nj, is the stuff on the ground textures or lighting?
erilaz
09-26-2002, 12:23 PM
Very nice look! Looking good indeed!:D
How did you achieve the nice lighting? Standard GI, or something else?
otacon
09-26-2002, 06:59 PM
Thanks for the comments!. Im not sure about an animation, im no good at rigging and so it would be really hard for me to do.:scream: Although i would love to make one. The stuff on the ground is the lighting, and its not GI...i basically tried to fake it by making almost like a sphere of spot lights around the whole thing....and im pretty happy with the results myself:D .. Ill probobly start texturing it some, but i think i need to take some time off for a little bit..get some more ideas brewing.:wip:

looking forward to seeing more.

Hey!Ur arena and character looks cool....The style of the modeling is very soft shaped!Very good. And the crazy idea of ur sport is really funny!!! keep it up!
Do u plan to put spectators?
otacon
09-27-2002, 12:42 AM
Thanks. I dont know what im gonna do about the crowd yet OZ.... It would be crazy to model a bunch of people, and i dont think my comp could handle it anyway. Ill just have to take it day by day and see what happends.:D And if anyone has some ideas on how i could do an audience..let me know. Ive started texturing the wood a little bit...i hope this pic inst too small to see it, but it does make a difference.Comments helpful!
otacon
09-27-2002, 12:43 AM
heres one with no color or textures.....
MikaelPersson
09-27-2002, 09:28 AM
oh, I like the B&W one. A thought regarding audience. If you could make them silouetted it would maybe be possible to pull it off.
Either make really simple poly humans, or try to find som footage with sitting people and just map them onto planes, maybe that would be the option where you could use almost normal pictures.
Virtuoso
09-27-2002, 09:36 AM
You you go the Q-TIP route that the Pod race scene stadium used in Phantom Menace..............But I think the best bet is to go with the stadium empty, a practice time for the characters..........Or as Mikael suggested the silouetted idea could have a shot............. Any other way will I think lower your final look and feel................Unless you have 10 Dual 2 Gig machines laying around...........................;)
I like the overall creation as well Otacon...........I think a little more detailing and extra touches will really bring this up to the high rent district...............Nice job thus far............. :)
otacon
09-27-2002, 07:07 PM
Thnks for the input guys. All these suggestions have gone through my head and im really thinking about leaving the spectators out of this one.:D Then i wont have to worry about making some more people and setting up a camera angle that doesnt show the cheapness of a lowpoly or mapped person...and it will give me more time to work on detailing everything....and the arena does have a good feeling to it when empty. So in the meantime im gonna work on the details of both the arena and the characters. Thanks again for the ideas.
nice and ditailed.
u realy need audience in this arena ! it will add alot to the brutal
mood of the pic....
keep on working !! :applause:

Thanks for the compliments. Lukashi: ill add more lights when it gets down to the wire. Right now i think i have about 90!:D Well ive taken my little break from working on this thing, but i guess i better get back at it. So ive put our hero in his new home away from home just so he can check it out. The arena still needs some more stuff added to it, and ill get to work on that as well as an opponent for this guy. Comments always welcomed>:D

A better view of the additions and the gladiator...:arteest:
MikaelPersson
10-06-2002, 05:27 PM
Now the detail crits are looming near. One thing that struck me. Those poles, make spikes/cones coloured in a lighter wood colour. Just like they would look if you chopped the bark off them.
Add a bevel to that window. Looks a little to sharp now.
The two rows of wood that forms a cirlce around the arena (connected to the poles) need a little more attention. Maybe make them straight and connect them individually to the poles.
Just a few quick suggestions. Keep up the good work.
I like how your gladiator is taking shape.
:wavey:
otacon
10-06-2002, 07:37 PM
Thanks! I know what you mean about those poles around the circle, i didnt spend enough time on that whole idea, but i get what your saying and ill be sure to make them look better.;)

Alright. I fixed up the poles around the arena, it there all seperately hooked now. Comments appreciated!:D
MikaelPersson
10-07-2002, 08:42 PM
Much better. Another more detailed suggestion:
http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/temp/pole.gif
Like they would have sharpened the poles with axes. I hope the picture explains. Would have been harder to write...

fellah
10-08-2002, 07:36 PM
I think you can make the picture look even better with just a little playing with the camera angle, fov etc.. and of course the posing of the characters in the scene..
but it's a very nice start, I'll be back :)
take care
// fellah
otacon
10-08-2002, 09:37 PM
Thanks for the replies! Thanks for the compliments Hickory! I know what you mean Fellah, im gonna start trying out some different angles when i pose the two characters fighting.;) Heres a shot of the challenger, im not sure if he will be on an ostrich or not....im still deciding.... and im not happy with his helmet, ill most likely change that, and maybe some other stuff. Tell me what you think.:D
MikaelPersson
10-08-2002, 09:44 PM
Just some general thoughts. Treat the metal with some wear and tear. It´s to shiny right now. But you were probably going to do that anyway.
Maybe design the helmet towards mercenary/freelance more. Less soldier like. And just throw in a sky for background, really desaturated but still a hint of blue up there, will add a lot.
Otherwise I really like the atmosphere you´ve created.
levin
10-09-2002, 07:04 AM
really great arena!
:buttrock:
Mikhael is right, the poles do look instanced and too perfect. if you shape it like a knife-sharpened pencil, it would look much better ! about 3 different kinds should be enough, then you can instance it and rotate it at different angles to eliminate redundancy.
otacon
10-10-2002, 11:04 PM
Thanks for the ideas! Heres another quick veiw before i get to work on the stuff you mentioned.:D

10-14-2002, 10:45 AM

Thanks Doug! For the lighting, i just set up about 90 or so spotlights with an intensity of 10 for each one....Their all in a big globe like shape surrounding the whole arena and some down in the arena to light up the characters.;).....But the challenge ends friday and i still need to fix up a few things. so back to work.:D
