Anyone know if there is a way to work in a symmetrical mode when modelling? I've been so used to working in symmetry in Lightwave and just wish I could do it in Maya, I just don't know how. Someone help! For some reason working on one side and mirroring it doesnt work for me. Thanks.

mirroring should work, make sure the pivot point is snapped to the middle of the x-axis, and when you duplicate your half mesh, set it to -1 in x scale, btw the insert key allows you to move the pivot around, and x snaps to grid, this should work perfectly. Also make sure you select instance in the duplicate options.

If you are modeling with Polys you can do this: Start your model on one side and then use the smooth proxy command and set the options to mirror the full geometry on the desired axis. After you do this, all the modifications that you do on one side of the "cage" will automatically reflect on the other side as well.

When you finish you can take the high rez geometry and delete the history. Then go to the attribute editor and turn on "allow topology modification" under "mesh control" and you will be able to do whatever you want with it.

Wow, quick responses, I love this community. Thanks a lot guys, special thanks to Nemirc, thats pretty much what I was looking for. Cheers!

Just create an instance of your half made object and scale it in -1 on the x axis. You could also plug a couple nodes in the Hypergraph but instances are usually the way to go.
