View Full Version : Hardwaremod: GeForce 6800GT to QuadroFX4000

I have just found some tutorial about hardware mod: GeForce6800 GT --> Quadro FX4000.
It is rather simple but risky...
Here is the link (I hope nobody has posted this before, it is rather old site):

That's really useful stuff!

This has been discussed numerous times on this forum. One thing to note is that the hardware modification is not needed at all. All that is needed is to flash the BIOS with the DELL Quadro BIOS and install the Nvidia Quadro drivers and you are done. To make it even better, the Dell BIOS should be modified (depending on the GeForce 6800 card you use) in order to match the GPU and RAM speed of your card. The QuadroFX 4000 card's GPU is set to 350 MHz and the RAM to 800 (400 x 2). The GeForce 6800 Ultra, for example, has its GPU stock at 400 (some even at 425) and the RAM at 1100 (550 x 2). Therefore, if you use the stock DELL Bios you will actually be slowing down the 6800's GPU and RAM. There is a program called Omni Edit Extreme that will allow you to easily edit the BIOS and it is made just for this sort of thing.

any chance to get a link to the Dell Quadro BIOS.exe?
so if I get a Nvidia 6800U and softmod it with the Dell Quadro BIOS i get a QuadroFX 4000 performance?

Follow this links and pick a bios You want to:
You will need NVFlash utility and also special bios editor - OmniExtremeEditorFX (to change mem and proc clocks) .
Good luck !

I'm very computer ignorant when it comes to processes like these. Is this something that a novice would be able to do? I just purchased a 6800gt (just waiting on it), or can someone help me through it, because the instruction look chinese to me. Thanks!
If you primarily use Windows, you can do the quadro mod sucessfully via software at no risk :) All you need is Rivatuner 15.3....
Anyway, to help clear up some confusion about the various GF6800NU/GT/Ultra -> QuadroFX4000 mods, here's a repost of some compiled info's (originally posted in http://cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=203943)
+ Color Coded for Enjoyment ! +
In summary, the only viable options for the mod are:
- softmod (rivaTuner 15.3)
- bios flash mod (DELL bios, nvFlash, OmniExtremeEditorFX, etc.)
[the hardware mod is totally unnescessary, see quoted text]
The softmod being the easiest one to use; all you need to do is install rivaTuner and enable the mod :) Quick, easy, and without risk! Easy to toggle back to geforce. Only works under Windows, though.
The Bios Mod is slightly older and is more technical. And Of course there's always a small amount of risk associated with flashing the bios, so just remember to take all the nescessary precautions [read the instructions in the guru3d threads in the quoted text]. Also, you will need to edit the DELL bios file to fit it to the specifications of your card to get the most out of it. The coolest thing about this mod is that it'll work under linux as well as Windows!
[Re: about the hardware mod]
That was rui's original hardmod (+ bios flash method) method, which predated RivaTurner 15.3. If you're going to be doing the mod for usage under windows, even rui himself recommended many times that you just use Rivaturner.
from rui0317: (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=123342&highlight=6800+dell)
BIOS flash worked good , forget about the resistors.
infact , i don't think "BIOS flash" is the better solution, but RivaTuner is . RT provide us an easy and safe way to mod the 6X00 serise to Quadro , so most people can do this mod , even you are a newbie.
[About the Various Mods]
Anyway, If you are interested, the various GF6800GT -> QuadroFX400 mods can be traced to these landmark progressions in a somewhat chronologicalish order:
Rui's hardmod method: (Hardmord + Bios Mod) http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=114000&perpage=10
It was discovered then, that a Bios mod alone as sufficient.
"He modded 6800LE->Quadro4000, BIOS only. But he succeed!!"
[However, if you read to the last few pages of the thread, unWinder had figured out a way to do the mod totally in software]
More info on bios mod here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=115155&highlight=6800+dell
[plus: bios mod instructions on first page]
Around this time, unWinder (the creator of rivaTuner) discovered a way to do with in software without need of bios flashing or hard mods! So, RivaTurner 15.3 was announced;
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118695 and then released:
Cheers to all the people to made all these discoveries! Expecially unWinder for rivaTuner!
So, anyway, both methods have proved successful for many people! Personally I'm using the rivatuner mod on my 6800GT.
[edit: also.. some notes:
Just a quick note as far as I know softmoding has only been done on the AGP 6800 cards. It should be possible to softmod a PCI-e card but I can't confirm that. I can say however that RT15.3 will only softmod the main graphics card, so SLI machines are SOL for dual quadros without doing it through bios flashing.]
have fun modding!

I recommend just using RivaTuner 15.3. I've not heard of Riva Tuner not working. The Bios mod does not always work (It didn't work on my 6800 GT) and you could risk damaging your card if you don't know what you are doing. I followed someones instructions on doing the Bios mod and when I was editing the bios, OmniExtreme tried to clock my card's memory at like 35 Ghz. I assume that would have done some damage to my card if I had run it. If you are going to try to do the bios mod you should get VGAbios and test your new bios before flashing your card.

I browsed through the threads at guru3d but was unable to make out if the RivaTuner software mod would on PCI-e cards aswell. I'm looking to buy a whole new system and would obviously like to buy the very latest technology (PCI-e rather than AGP), but I would be a fool not to try and take advantage of this softmod, which looks to be the best ever. So anyone have a clue if the mod is for AGP cards only or it will work for PCI-e aswell?

It is a very good question... I think it should be directly adressed to Unwider - Developer of Riva Tuner! at www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com)
