th topic is pretty explaining..
everything is modelled, textured and rendered in maya.
most of the textures are mixes of several photo-based file textures and procedurals, except for some parts of the flower, which are all procedural.

did it because i havent done much 3d for a year (except for some effects in short films) and needed to do it so i wouldnt forget it totally :)

the image is apparently too big for the forum so here is a link:

nice light - and pretty textures ... but it seems the modelling of the flower is quite simple isn't it?! espescially the leafs are lookin' undetailed .......

hmm - the first impression is very good and so on u will get a  on ur pic :)

This is a very impressive work, my friend. I love the lighting, and the texures are spectacular.

My only crits are the flower in the render, But it looks as though you have fixed some of my problems with it in the shaded view of it. In the render, it looks to flat and the leaves have a rectangular and non-irregular look to them, but like I said, it looks as though you fixed it.

Again, very inspiring work.

hello
what you see on the shaded is pretty much exactly what there is in the final image, its just the stem that is a bit thinner in the final.
it could be that the lightig and translucensy makes it look flatter..
is it the leafes on the flower itself or the green ones that bother you?

that's just damn sexy. good job.

my only crit is that the DOF seems a little heavy close to the camera but that is clearly subjective.

again, sexy-liscious.

I think it's the petals on the outer plant that bother me...perhaps it's based on a real flower and I'm just ignorant of it. I'm looking at it knowing it's cg, so if I see a hard edge on the end of a petal that my brains says should be pointed, I mention it. If that's how it is in reality, or even in your mind, please ignore that statement. I just think the enviroment is one of the best I've seen, and I think the flower stands out a bit from it...like it's not quite right. The model looks good. Perhaps it's the textures. Again, the flower seems too uniform somehow in the rendered version.

Sorry I can't seem to articulate my problems with the flower.

Again, fantastic piece.

here is an upclose of the flower from a 4000x2000 render..
im not 100% satisfied with the green leafs, but the rest turned out pretty well i think...
its a shame one doesnt see more of the stem and its small leafs, it pretty cool, all procedural textures.

Nice job Nilsson. Love the lighting and detail with the environment.

btw, whats the lettering (design) on the right rock in the big flower image?

Since you're using maya.... what renderer did you use? Curious... :)

The lighting is ummm... nice

sheesh, people STILL think you cant get nice lighting
with Mayas renderer?? come on:rolleyes:

anyhoo, the flower modeling looks nice,
but I think its the big leaves on the stem that are the problem,
they show up very angular in the final render, which is what makes it look like its cheaply modeled.
It might just be the angle, or maybe the leaves need more work?

I duno,
anyways, keep it up

hahhaaaha....

I guess I did come off that way, didn't mean to. I know you can get amazing results with the default renderer. I guess it just looks kinda GI-ish. Not that you can't fake that though.

Anywho. . . . my question still stands.

Could we perhaps get some wires and viewport grabs to get a sense of how it's layed out? Lights too. I'm always interested in lighting setups.

yes the image is rendered in maya (didnt i write that?)
as you can see from the screenshots there are 2 lightsources.
actually only the directional light is used in the total scene, the spotlight is only used for the foreground (which is hidden in this scene, because i had to render in layers for the dof to work) so right here its doing nothing. the rest of the illumination comes from the sky.dll plugin which gave me a really nice result. the only problem i got was that the rocks on the ground at first was glowing on the underside since the sky went right through the ground plane, so i had to create a box beneath to stop the light.

there is also a screenshot of what the material for the stones look like, as you can tell its a big mess :)

IMHO, the way that some things are in or are not in focus looks too overdone. The result being that the scene looks a bit toy-like, or too small. I think the amount of focus blur may need some tweaking. Try looking at what would happen with a similar scene when taken with a real camera, for example.

hello
since i am an amateur photographer, i do know how DOF works.
it depends on a lot of things like focal lenght, fstop, lenses and so on, and after studying my own photos, i believe that the dof is (or actually lack of it) high, but not unrealisticly high.
even with my 35mm lens (quite wide) i can get a lot bigger circles in the off-focus areas..

i hope you see this more as an explaination to the way i was thinking, than a way protect the image.

I like the overall mood in the image. very nice.. but I think the flower looks a bit superimposed and just slightly too bright white..

apart from that, nice.

Right, I render in Max all the time... but I don't always use the "default" renderer. Brazil, Vray, FinalRender.

You could have used prman, entropy within Maya with Rat or MayaMan. There's a ton of other renderers available.

but thanks anyway... you answered my question.

Fantastic piece of work, Nilsson!

And I don't think the DOF is extreme... it sometimes occures. For example DOF is rarely visible in a day-time shot (where's a lot of light), but this is a sunset scene (I guess...), so it SHOULD be more blurred.

And one more thing... When I first saw it - I thought you simulated a pin-hole camera. It somehow looked that way. :)
Pin-hole cameras usualy make blurry shots with darker/more blurred corners.

Superb work anyhow!

Nice work, not perfect, but has a lot of mood.

What I really loved in this piece of art is this beautiful flower emerging from the arid rocks. Itīs full of love.

Nice concept, congratulations!!!

I think the scene comes together nicely. Great job on the textures and lighting, came out really good!

When Maya's renderer is utilized properly, you can get some fantasic results instead of downloading a bunch of GI junk renderers.

Again, nice job. Good to see you're getting back into the "zone" :)

Very nice job. I have to agree, the lighting looks great. Only crit. is that the forground might be a little to blurry. Not sure though.

Nice job.
