CgTalk:FXWars! A Volcano in Downtown

COMPOSITE WAR
BY titaniumdave

Volcano
Pronunciation: vl-'kA-(")nO, vol-
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -noes or -nos
Etymology: Italian or Spanish; Italian vulcano, from Spanish volcn, ultimately from Latin Volcanus Vulcan
1 : a vent in the crust of the earth or another planet from which usually molten or hot rock and steam issue; also : a hill or mountain composed wholly or in part of the ejected material
2 : something of explosively violent potential

THE CHALLENGE:
Create an eruption of a Volcano in a city. The challenge this time is that the volcano eruption should be a composite over live action. In the finished animation you may intercut the footage between live action, FX composites and 100% cg scenes as long as you have at least one composite shot in your sequence. You can shoot your own live action footage, but if you wish, you may use the city footage that I have supplied (Appended to this message).

A cool animation might be a eruption of a volcano, a shot of the pyroclastic flow and then some lava going over city streets. Just imagine people running away from lava, meltin everything on its path.

The best animation/short will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Best Simulation
Best Animation
Best Editing(NEW!)
Best Visual Effects (NEW!)
Best Overall Entry

The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

DATELINE: Monday March 7th 12:00 PM

YOU HAVE One month and two weeks to do the challenge.

CHALLENGE SPECIFIC RULES:

You may use a pre exiting models and filmed footage, as long as you have the the rights to use them.
You may provide a heavily edited animation with all the trimmings (hell add live action if you want), as long a you provide another PLAIN wireframe animation or image of the VFX shots at work.
Remember the key of the challenge if for you guys to brush up on your composite skills.
GENERAL RULES:

The animation and simulations (if any) must have been done AFTER the topic has been
announced.
WIP are encouraged if they are posted in ANOTHER

Can you explain why you have links to rollercoasters under resourses? That was from the last challenge...I though you were going to get rid of your editor for all the mistakes he made on the rollercoaster challenge...

Anyways, looks like fun, I dont know if ill have the time for it but ill give it a try.

Sounds like a good one. I'm in. :D

P.S. it would help if the provided video plates had thumbnails. 6 x 22 megs takes a while to download.

I think i will do it, can we have just some more information about lens of camera fot the footage and pictures for help us in tracking / matching ? (28 mm or 35 or ... and the time of the shoot (10 pm, 8 am, ...)

Just for know and try to work better and faster.

Thanks for all your work on Cgtalk Roberto Ortiz,

Cheers,
Hugo

The footage was done on a Canon ZR25 Mini DV camera (Lens: 4.2- 42.0 mm f/1.8-2.9)
But to make things easier I shot all the locked footage with a tripod.
Of course I recomend that if you can shoot your own footage please do so.

Mind you the footage has NO color correction.

NOTE: I have added the thumbnails.

Wait, so the eruption itself has to occur in the downtown area? So you couldn't have a nearby peak explode (showing that footage from a downtown view), and then have lava flowing through the streets downtown or something?

I kind of want to try this, if for nothing more than to practice compositing. Not sure if I'm going to have time over the next month or not though...

The eruption can happen either downtown or on a nearby peak.

The key is that in both cases the eruption should affect somehow the downtown area.

Hi Roberto

any info on the camera for the still images?

No Problem:
Canon PowerShot S400
(with7.4-22.2mm glass zoom lens, equivalent to a 36-108mm zoom on a 35mm camera)

Oh I forgot to add...

I never said that the city had to be a city in the present...
Cough Pompei cough cough....

Hey Roberto my English is not the best so do i understand it right that i can make the street getting cracks and lava coming out of it ? would that be what you mean by an eruption happening downtown ? And the next thing is you said :

-R

Is it possible that you remember the exact settings of your Camera ? Like 35 mm f/2.0 or whatever setting you used ? That would make matching the 3d stuff to the footage a hell lot easier i think :)

Thanks in advance
Sven

QUESTION:

I just recently developed a lava shader.

Can I re-use that here without being disqualified, or do I have to "re-invent" it?

Ok Ill try to help the best that i can...

I love your idea!
So yes, if that the way you want to do your animation, I have no problem.

Sorry I just posted all the info I had...
Next time I might use markers in the ground.
