View Full Version : Transparent objects

Hi everyone.
I've got a bottle floating on the sea (half of it is under the surface, the other half is over). The bottle is transparent, but there should not be water in it!
This is driving me crazy:annoyed:. In a still I could use a boolean subtraction but what can I do in animation?

You can animate a boolean. I'd probably try something else if it were me but I thought I'd let you know it's possible.

Hey Iain,

William's question is boggling to me now that i try to find an answer to it. How would you do it?

Would a special type of material work? such as two sided or would the actuall bottle be modelled with a scalled sown bottle in it with a reflection material so that you can't see the inside?

i would love to know the most efficient way of doing this.

Thanks Iain, I didn't know it but however I'll try to find another solution.

Fede, I thought about the scaled down version of the bottle, but it's unuseful if you have to put something inside it (like a scrap of paper, a message...).

Other ideas?

it's really a big challenge!, what's the type of your sea mesh?
polygon? plane with x1000 scale? patch?
what's the animation method?...wave? noise? displace map?

ok; I tried what I was thinking out; and it works!!!.....kind of

Here's what it looks like.

It's a little chunky on the edges but I think this method might have some promise.

The key is using the outer invisible cylinder as the vol. select object to tessellate; then use your visible cylinder to select and change the material ID.

Rather than attempting to physically model this effect into the ocean water, I would instead probably approach this by using a compositing technique.

If I get time tonight, I'll try and post a simple example.

I didn't start the project, so there's no mesh or animation method, I think I'll use a box and noise.

Grayson, your attempt is fine, I'll work on it! Thank you very much!

I don't like compositing. You can call me a maniac, but I think it's like cheating and I'll avoid it wherever possible... I don't like even using photos as textures and so on. I always wanna get the job done by hand using only 3dsmax and photoshop :bounce:
