Having only discovered this site a week before the previous challenge deadline, I sat by the sidelines, jaw on the ground as I saw the quality of some of the work. Knowing full-well that I am not even in the same field as these guys, I thought I'd enter anyway.

Due to the 'guesswork' nature of this challenge, I can't really explain much of what's bouncing of the inside of my hollow skull, so I'll just post up a couple of prelim sketches.

drunkenmaster20
09-09-2002, 01:15 PM
Oh yeah, and please try to excuse the fact I'm sketching on a spiral-bound notepad. I am at work, after all. :airguitar

Also note that these are random sketches, not all part of my final idea, just a rickety bridge *towards* that idea. :surprised

I love your cartoony style! Really nice!
I understand the rigors of having to concept-sketch at work. Just draw on the back of important documents!:D Or, do what I did and draw on the back of the print-out of this challenge's rules!

drunkenmaster20
09-09-2002, 01:42 PM
okay, here's a couple more. One a propulsion system, the other, a Raleigh Chopper (yes, really. But I had to do it from memory, on a wiro-pad, with a biro, gimme some slack).

An idea is now beginning to form. I'll start knocking out some polys when I get back home.

drunkenmaster20
09-09-2002, 08:06 PM
okay, here are some first-run prelims.

Note that This is my first:

Head
character
exercise in poly modelling
etc.

drunkenmaster20

And here's a runner.

drunkenmaster20
09-10-2002, 12:26 AM
k, I've done some more work on the runner:

btw, modelling humans is waaaaaaaaaaaay beyond my abilities. If anyone knows of any good tuts, please let me know. :D

damn funny expression! cant wait to see how it translates...

drunkenmaster20

Here are some more sketches. I would have posted them up last night, but my scanner at home isn't plugged in, and I'm rather lazy. Still, I'm back at work now, and using the other scanner. :D

drunkenmaster20
09-10-2002, 03:17 PM
okay, here's a couple more doodles I did while waiting for various software packages to install at work.

I'm thinking of doing the goggles/helmet due to lack of skill/experience at modelling heads. I'm not *too* displeased with what I've got so far, but I'm having the devils time trying to do the eyes. The only trouble being that you can't really see the expression :/

I'll give it some thought and see what I can do...

drunkenmaster20
09-10-2002, 03:29 PM
Well, due to the lack of guesses, I'm thinking that you all know exactly what I'll be doing...

Seriously though, please make some comments/crits. I can take most forms of abuse, so feel free to tell me that I need to give up 3D modelling for a life of simple pleasures such as fishing and eating mud....

And some help on fitting eyeballs into heads wouldn't go amiss either ;)

Funny you should mention that, I was thinking the same thing at work today. Then I realised I didn't know how to do it. Then I realised how to do it. Then I went into a blind panic.

Anyway, I'm back home now, so I'll spend a little while with the head, and maybe start on a body..

drunkenmaster20
09-10-2002, 06:33 PM
okay, done some work on the face, and managed to get some eyeballs in, and teeth. I also trashed the nose and rebuilt it, as the approach I took was taking me nowhere fast.

next job on the face will be adding those lines you get between the nose and cheeks when you scream (try it, you'll see what I mean)

drunkenmaster20
09-10-2002, 11:59 PM
I've also done some more with the runner:

(just started the rocket unit, really..

This looks like great fun, I want a go.

Your sketch has more terror in it, I think because his mouth is open wider.

leigh
09-11-2002, 12:33 AM
Hehehe your character looks like he's scared shitless :D
Looks rather fascinating so far...
Oh and don't worry, modelling a human body really isn't as terrifying as it may initially seem...
And this challenge is as good a time as any to give it a bash, and so far, things aren't looking too bad

Perhaps you could knock out a few of his teeth, to show how dentistilly (is there such a word :surprised I doubt it....) hazardous this sport is for you!

Good luck for the challenge!

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 09:33 AM
yeah, having had first-hand experience of teeth-hitting-handlebars, I should be able to chip a few of those pearly-whites. :D

I gotta add some more detail to the runner, like a throttle, and a load of pipework, and get started on a body for the poor sod. And then I can start on the environment. I'm leaving it till last, as it will be a very very big giveaway.

I'm gonna go do some jobs (I'm at work now :( ) And I'll try to knock out a couple of sketches in the interim. I have to decide on a pose for the 'guy', and possibly one for 'the other guy', if I decide there should be one.

And still, nobody has guessed what 'sport' this will be...

PS. Clanger, you're right, I'll try and crowbar his gob open a bit more when I get home.

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 12:09 PM
I'm also thinking about adding some weapons, either hat-mount, or runner mount. And maybe a Bond-like hidden machine gun. here's some more biro-work:

Erik
09-11-2002, 01:01 PM
Nice idea drunkenmaster ;) a good job is begining...

i have begin something too, with the help of your list...
tell me about my skecht.

good luck

here's my lunchbreak idea. You can't have sports without 'in your face' camera, so here it is:

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 04:53 PM
the text on the scribble describes this one:

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 07:46 PM
ok here's some updates, I'm sort of doing a little bit of each per visit to 3ds.

I managed to widen the mouth of the guy, so he looks a bit more screamy, and I managed to add those little lines round the mouth too (eventually)

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 07:48 PM
and here's the camera I started on (needs a lot more chunks and buttons)

CactusJack
09-11-2002, 07:53 PM
lookin good...

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 11:38 PM
okay, here we go for a new batch before I go sleeps:

the head, I've changed a few bits, mainly moving the jaw back, as the underbite was enormous. I've also tried adding some basic hair, but it's not looking very good, so I'll have another crack at it tomorrow.

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 11:40 PM
I've added some 'crap' to the camera too:

drunkenmaster20
09-11-2002, 11:45 PM
I also added some 'bits' to the rocket unit.

Benno
09-12-2002, 12:55 AM
Hey Drunk.

I absolutely love your character! I really dig cartoony stuff and he's right there! Also congrats for having all the gear worked out so soon, this will really cook if you animate it!

Cheers!

Benno.

drunkenmaster20
09-12-2002, 01:26 AM
thanks m8. To be honest, I've actually surprised myself with the character, I thought I was gonna have a total nightmare, but it's just a mini-nightmare :D

On the good side, nobody has guessed what the sport is, and probably won't until I start the environment, which should be difficult *1000, and strikes fear into my heart. But I'm thinking there will be a fairly easy way to do it, I've just gotta find it...

funny thing is, I couldn't even sketch the environment, it would just look like a scribbly mess (like my other sketches, then :airguitar) :D

Erik
09-12-2002, 10:54 AM
I really like your job drunkenmaster, hope to see more quickly ;)

drunkenmaster20
09-12-2002, 12:04 PM
I'll be doing some more on it tonight, hopefully. Not quite sure exactly what I'll be working on, probably do some more gadgets and stuff on the camera and runner. And I might stick some pupils in the blokes eyes too, to add a bit of character, and maybe do something with the hair.

I'm still researching the environment, as it's gonna be tricky. I'd like to ask for ideas, but that would give away my plan... (cue evil chords)

rondo
09-12-2002, 05:14 PM
looking cool - I was just at rollercoaster park here in the states(Cedar Point) and this reminds me of the crazy rides they have there.

Like the guy's screaming face. keep it up!

drunkenmaster20
09-12-2002, 07:26 PM
Thanks, Rondo.

Here's an update on the runner. I've added throttle cables and bent the bars back, because, with them as they were the rider would be hunched over them like a granny on a zimmer frame...

I started using the light tracer in max too, and it rocks.

drunkenmaster20
09-13-2002, 12:02 AM
okay, here's another render of the cam, also with the light tracer (i love the light tracer), I've added a bit more cack to it, and fitted some wheels. Still unsure about propulsion for it though. Gonna have to re-do the wheel clamps, as they don't fit. and they also look terrible.

drunkenmaster20
09-13-2002, 12:06 AM
I've been having some trouble with my head... I had some rudimentary hair in place, but every time I tried to meshsmooth it, it would bomb 3ds, costing me an amount of work. After this happening a couple of times, I decided to just remove it, and try a different approach. I also stuck some cacky textures on the eyes, just for my benefit, really, and rendered it up in the light tracer.

(ps. if I'm posting too many pictures, someone tell me now, cos I'm gonna post after most of my updates.)

drunkenmaster20
09-13-2002, 01:17 AM
I'm gonna leave all the texturing until the end, HR, for a couple of reasons, mainly because I want to get the modelling done, and I won't be able to concentrate on it with having textures everywhere, and also because I've never textured much more than a box, or a line of text, and tbh, the prospect scares me.

drunkenmaster20
09-13-2002, 09:52 AM
Here's a doodle of the sort of pose I'm going to go for. Please excuse the legs. no matter how hard I try, I can't get them looking right, but I'm sure you all get the idea.

Clanger
09-13-2002, 10:28 AM
Will that mean we wont get the legs flailing behind hanging on for dear life pose? Would be a shame.

Keep updating.

drunkenmaster20
09-13-2002, 10:40 AM
(without trying to give too much away..) I'm probably going to try to model two characters, as this sport is going to be 1v1 race-oriented. I'm going to mess about with the poses, but I'm kinda fond of this one. The other competitor may be the flailing one, especially once I've implemented the weapon tech :airguitar

But, saying all this, I've never made a body (unless you count a box as a body. I certainly don't :) ) so anything could happen in the next three weeks.

Wish me luck, it's going to be a harrowing weekend (especially with the unreal tournament 2003 demo coming out :gulp) but I'll hopefully have something to show for it.

Everything´s comming nice!!!!

That guy seem like someone I know

drunkenmaster20
09-13-2002, 09:03 PM
thanks guys. Here's this evenings first update: I've stuck the cam and the runner into a new scene, and stuck them both on the same rail. The main problem is that I made the runner to scale, and just spammed the camera, so some resizing may be required.
We're now getting to the point where some of you may be guessing what I'm doing, but it can't be helped, I'm afraid.
In between messing with the camera, and arming the runner, I'm gonna start *trying* to make a character. Because I haven't got any experience in rigging characters, I'm just gonna model him in pose (and his competitor too, time allowing).
Then comes the environment. I'm not sure if I can even do that, but, gods damn it, I'm gonna try.

MikaelPersson
09-13-2002, 11:04 PM
This is absolutely hilarious. I really like what you´ve got so far.
My first guess of a sport would be something along the human canonball. They both have a large target way ahead of them. Then it´s just a question of hitting it with ones body.

drunkenmaster20
09-14-2002, 12:22 AM
okay, it's the witching hour, and time for me to stop staring at vertices.

Updates have been: I polished up the deck, and chassis of the runner, they're now a lot smoother, and more futurey-like. I noticed in one of the other threads someone was praising the art of 'quadding' your polys before you meshsmooth them, and it makes such an enourmous difference. I'm learning so much about poly modelling doing this. You guys rock :buttrock:
The only problem is that some really daft things are taking far too long like, for example, the cable-tie around the throttle cables took about an hour, purely because I couldn't get it to fit snugly.
And after all that, I've decided to have them run them into the headstem anyway. That'll keep me busy for a while.

here you go:

drunkenmaster20
09-14-2002, 03:21 AM
Hmmm, in my impatience for the soon-to-be released unreal2003 demo, I decided to venture back over to the arena and cleaned up a couple more bits and pieces. I've sorted the brackets on the cam-rollers, and I've quadded and modded the rocket unit on the bike, as seen just below.

[edit] now I look at it, I think the runner would look better with the rocket unit mouded into it.:airguitar I'll get onto that tomorrow, probably.
[edit] I think I'm just putting off starting a character ;)
[edit] just done the rocket-meets-board thing. Going to bed now.

JCGA
09-14-2002, 03:34 AM
Great concept and progress man! Looks great.. Will you be texturing this at some stage?

KUTGW!! (keep up the good work)

drunkenmaster20
09-14-2002, 01:52 PM
I will indeed. Unfortunately, I'm new to nearly all aspects of 3dsmax. It's hard to know what tools to use for what jobs, and if you do know, it's probably hard to find them :)

I plan on finishing all of the modelling before I start any of the texturing. I may start giving things some basic colour as I finish them, but nothing serious till the end.

I'll have some updates later, although quite what, I don't really know :airguitar

drunkenmaster20
09-14-2002, 07:55 PM
In between bouts of ut2k3, I've been tarting up the runner, I've redone most of the front of the rocket area, with new gnarlier intakes, and smoother sides. I've also removed the stem+fittings, and moulded the stem directly onto the board. I kept the handles for now.

drunkenmaster20
09-14-2002, 09:35 PM
Then I bit the bullet (cue dramatic music) and started on a character. With me being a little unorthodox, I'm modelling it directly into pose, and from the soles up. You may think I'm mental. and you may well be right, but here's what I've managed so far, with just a load of poly-pulling.

drunkenmaster20
09-15-2002, 01:27 AM
Okay, bedtime for drunk, been staring at this screen most of the day now, and I think that's enough. There's probably a little bell ringing down at the optometrists, with 'Dal' flashing above it.

I digress. I have got the basic shape of the character in place now, but it needs quite a bit of work, I think the pose is mostly okay, but the clothes need a lot of work for creases and such, and the top is still a bit too puffy, and the shoulders need some work, etc etc. But it's a start, eh?

Crits are heavily encouraged here, it's my first character, and I need all the help I can get :)

thanks guys. I'm using max5, and using poly modelling and copious amounts of meshsmooth.

Erik

hey drunkenmaster... i ve not use max 5 at this time, i use max 4.2 and wait for max5, i should have it in october....
did u use the IG an HDRI illumination of max5 for your images ?

drunkenmaster20
09-16-2002, 12:52 AM
one 15-minute haircut, coming up. Uber quiffs are free today, sir.

I'm just making most of the body rather roughly, mainly to see if I could recreate the pose. I'm still not sure whether to keep it, or just use it for a template. Still, with it all in place, you get a better sense of scale, too.

Anyway, here you go, and goodnight. as usual crits are encouraged :)

Clanger
09-16-2002, 09:31 AM
Your model has come on leeps and bounds since I last saw (Friday) I'm enjoying watching it develop.
I do think the key here is the feeling of speed, it's got it now so don't lose it. Motion bluring the background is something worth thinking about at the end.

Benno
09-16-2002, 12:19 PM
Hey, that's looking good DM! I have been off the air for a few days so I'm just catching up on the progress. Only one obsrvation, I think the handgrips could come down in diameter some:) Apart from that, you're flyin!

drunkenmaster20
09-16-2002, 12:40 PM
Yeah, you'll have to excuse my messing with stuff as I go through, the motion blur was originally to hide the low-quality hair...

And the handgrips were actually smaller, due to meshsmoothing, but an unfortunate export/import incident reduced it to an editable mesh, already subdivved, so I'll have to redo it.

CactusJack
09-16-2002, 05:09 PM
Workin with the pose to try and get size? are you going to make bone him (excuse the expression:beer: ) so you can have various poses?...maybe its just really early in the day and I'm not understanding what your doing. Anyhow, you model is looking great, its maintaining the comical feeling/but everything seems funny right now:beer: ....keep it up...:wip: :wip: !!!

gwelty
09-17-2002, 01:42 AM
i just noticed that your first sketch looks alot like your avatar pic....

i've been following yours and diggin it...especially since you say this is your first head, character, poly-model

hair is working for sure

drunkenmaster20
09-17-2002, 08:48 AM
CJ: No, I'm not going to bone him. I wouldn't have time to learn character rigging and animation as well as finish the guy, and do an environment too, and texture it all. it's a daunting prospect.

Thanks, qwelty. Unfortunately the hair only looks that good from one angle atm, its pretty awful, tbh, but I'm going to look into that later.

Updates are gonna thin out a bit as I start work on the environment. The annoying thing is that I would like to ask a couple of theory questions on modelling some stuff, but don't wanna give anything/everything away. :)

Thanks guys. I've had a couple of days off, because my brain needs a rest, and I needed to gather inspiration. I've knocked out another biro sketch, to give you an idea of the environment, but without giving much away. Here you go.

I've been having some real trouble creating the environment here, and to cap it all, I've just got a Flash job in, so I gotta dust off my actionscript skills (yeah, right). Hopefully I'll be able to knock it out pretty quickly, and then get back to this.

Sorry.

drunkenmaster20
09-27-2002, 05:16 PM
Thanks, Erik, but no, I haven't had time. I screwed my finances (mate's wedding, 2 (yes, 2) Hard drives failed, car trouble, expensive new game server, my vices, etc.) So I really have to do these flash jobs, or I'm gonna be in debt again within 2 weeks.

Here's what I'm working on right now : http://www.btinternet.com/~dalsarns/Flash/gallery.html

I don't think I'll have time to finish this challenge though :(

I haven't even browsed through the other entries lately either. I'll make a point of having a look through tonight.
