View Full Version : Twisted Extreme Sports-Character/Enviroment-Clanger
Clanger 09-09-2002, 09:24 AM Switched the computer on this morning thinking "I bet the challenge hasn't been anounced yet" moan, moan.
I was so wrong, tons of posts already, wonderful.
Right, the last challenge I spent too much time on the flying machine and my muscle guy got bodged together. I now have the perfect opportunity to do him properly, no excuses. It went horribly wrong due to not planning it all out first and just diving in.
So now I'm going to work out where every polygon will go first.
Not sure of the sport got a few ideas just know it will need extreme strength. I think his face will be more human this time but his body will be the product of 22nd Centry advances in steroid use.
Enough rambling, let's begin.

In the 22nd centry it's popular to genetically modify yourself to look like your favorite historical figure.

Are we going to see a 3D version of arnold? T2 hunting?

Any resemblance to someone living or dead is purely coincidental.
Got to say that in case something liquid pours through the window!
The cunning plan is to wait until someone guesses something brilliant then I'll pinch the idea.

The Running Man
Did you see that one?
It's about a futuristic running contest (read: extreme sport) with Arnold Schwarzenegger

note to self: good idea...

some sort of "kindergarden cop"...get everyone to the potty before they....
Clanger

Joril: Very familar with 'The Running Man' Not thinking of doing any sort of chassing though. If you want a good laugh rent 'Hercules in New York' staring Arnold Strong.
drunkenmaster20: Maybe I shouldn't have said that, now I'm going to have to come up with something very original.
CactusJack: Too smelly, using kids as some sort of bait that's a possibility.
I've now got a fix on the sport, here's a clue. Guess right and I won't say.

I do remember arnold being pregnant in one of those movies. Is the egg connected in some way? Speed delivery contests?
drunkenmaster20
09-10-2002, 09:48 AM
a futuristic egg & spoon race?
Clanger
09-10-2002, 10:02 AM
artistx: I'd forgotten about that film, probably just as well.
drunkenmaster20: You just could be on the same wave length.

Hypothesis: Extreme battle with explosive eggs as weapons. And all the game players are famous actors like Schwarzy.... that's it ?
Clanger

P.Delapouite: No explosives involved.
Another Picture clue.

Can't decide if I should model an accurate body of the person it's starting to look like by pure coincidence, or go over the top with extreme muscle.
What would you guys out there prefer?
Normal front/back split sketch attached.

Help!!!
What's the best way to model the chest/Upper Arm tie in.
If I model in the standard crucifix position, on a real person the chest stretches considerably, see red line.
So should I model this stretch and if so how do I rig so that the chest looks right when the arms are down? Or just leave the chest in its down position and avoid showing the arms up?
Thanks for your wisdom.

I'd go for the more accurate render, after all, the person it is strangely appearing to be like is stacked with plenty of muscle as it is. Any more, and he wouldn't be able to reach his own hips..
IMHO a good solution for this kind of problems is model your character in the standar position and manual adjust your "skinning aberrations" after rigging...
Clanger
09-11-2002, 08:19 PM
drunkenmaster20: Accurate it is, with 100% of the votes.
Rot: "and manual adjust your "skinning aberrations" after rigging..." Rot or anyone can you elaborate on how this is done in Max?
Clanger
09-12-2002, 12:04 AM
Think I've sussed it! "morph angle deformer" at the bottom of the skin modifier. Seems to do what I'm after, need to go and test.

Just a tip, I usually find it easier to model with the arms in a downward slanting position. Basically like this:
0
/|\
/ \
It makes it easier to define the body shape accurately, and it's no harder to rig. It also looks far more natural, which definitely helps.

Hi Clanger
Another useful pre-rig pose idea is to have the legs parted in an inverted "V" from the front and to bend the leg about 30deg to the back, don't try to keep the foot flastin relation to the ground but leave it correct in relation to the lower leg. This allows for better mesh deformation when animating.
Benno.:)
Clanger

timothyD: Does sound a better idea for getting the arms down alongside the body but I wonder how easy it is getting the arms vertically in the air from there.
Benno: Never seen anyone do this before, makes sense.
Although if the foot is no longer flat to the floor at the start how does that effect keeping the foot planted to the floor when animating?

09-12-2002, 01:37 PM
Hi Clanger.
My pre-rig leg posture thing works well provided you can set your rig into that unnatural looking pose. The character looks as if its just leapt off the ground. Setting up your bones may cause some re-thinking (i was using max/biped on the last one i did) With Maya I'd have to set the bones up to conform to the mesh and then reset the pose of the character on frame one by unbending the legs and setting them up correctly in relation to the ground. I will try to dig up some renders of the character I'm talking about.
Cheers!

drunkenmaster20: Not sure yet, maybe Y fronts.
Benno: I've only rigged one character before, this sounds a bit advanced. I will experiment with it though, keen to learn.

I've never rigged a character. come to think of it, I've never made one either. They don't call this a 'challenge' for nothing, eh? :)

Thought I'd show how it's going, lot's of vertex pushing and pulling to go though.

That is looking really promising. The only thing that stands out are the wings of his nose. Too round maybe? Otherwise I really like it.
Clanger
09-13-2002, 04:54 PM
Mikael P. I've tweaked the nose some, such a difficult area to model, not sure if I've done any good.
Last update until after the weekend, going to be away from the computer. So hopfully I'll be refreshed and can see all the flaws with new eyes on Monday.

Virtuoso/CactusJack: Thanks for the nice words.
Here's where I am with the head, 90% of the modelling finished. Think I'll leave it as is for a while and make a start on his body and go back to tweeking the head when I need to marry the two together, just to keep the interest going.
Clanger, Is it best to start your figure with the head? I started at the feet so I could put of having to do the head until I had more idea of how it should look. Where do you find reference for the heads?
The Sport has got to be blue crocodile egg hatching.
Benno, any help with rigging a figure would be of great help as I have never even finished a figure yet.

nice looking head... hate to have him as competition
Clanger

Zin: I always find the head to be the most fun part of building a character, it's the body that starts to be a chore.
You’re so close with the sport but no cigar.
gwelty: It's all right he's tough enough to take it.
Expect an update later on today, I'm announcing this so I'll have to get my finger out and do something.
Nice but a bit square, huh?

m@. : If your refering to his forehead, yes needs more work, though I'll put hair on first as some of it's going to be covered up.
Well I've started on the body, lots to fix, lots to do

Looking very built Clanger................Well done. Seeing your work from the past and now this really has me thinking you are one fine artist................. so keep working on your character, if you stop even for a short time all that ripped ab and body muscle will turn to faaaaaaaat.;) :)
By the way I got your PM..............Is this what you wanted to see.............

Nice progress. Greek athlete? The part bothering me is his navel, I would like a rounder one, but maybe that´s just me.
Anyway, really nice model.

really nice work.......but i do have to agree about the navel
Clanger
09-20-2002, 06:39 PM
Virtuoso: I know those pesky little muscles refuse to go right, I'm thinking of erasing the whole area and starting again.
Mikael P./gwelty: I've changed the navel, maybe not enough? My reference body (That accidently looks like someone famous) is just a slit, but if it looks wrong it is wrong.
Last update for the weekend, just checking how it all looks with head plonked on.

now it looks o.k...... i think since its now not so wide helps alot
