View Full Version : Fixing Non-Planar Polygon Faces in Maya - Help?!

I have a problem with a model that I really am not motivated to rework. :p

Anyway, I am using Maya 4.0, and I have a polygonal model of a lightsaber hilt (I know, I know...) that I have used boolean operations on (difference) to create divits in the basic cylinder as impressions for the buttons to slide through. By doing that, I have ended up with some faces that are not planar. Below is an example:

http://www.vr.clemson.edu/~dstone/saberWIP/saberHiltTest4.jpg

As you can see, the plane that is circled actually bends on the diagonal, which makes the overall look of that section pretty mediocre. I tried selecting the entire hilt and using the Cleanup option, but it just split it up into planar faces within the original face, but kept the same bend. I really wanted a smooth look to the saber, and if I was not a perfectionist nor requred having closeups of the hilt during the animation, I would not bother correcting it. But, since the former would exist even without the latter, I really want to fix it.

So I was hoping some of you talented modelers might have some advice on how to fix this, or how to avoid it in future modeling, or both. :) Thanks for your time in reading this, and if you would like to see the original WIP thread, click below. Thanks again!

i am not a maya guy, so this could be way off....

in lightwave there is a tool called smooth shift that will combine many polys and extrude as one. it is great for dealing with non planers that cause this kind of stretching. basically just extrude some tiny amount without any bevel and all is good. hope this helps.

good luck

The only way I know of fixing it would be to delete the non-planar faces (let's say 2 faces) and then going into Component mode -> Edges, choose the Append to Polygon tool w/Options under Polygon menu, and make sure ensure Planarity is clicked on. Then just select the edges one at a time until you make one quad or face. Then do it again to fill in the next face.

Basically you're just rebuilding faces.

Hope this helps!
