New updates to Vue d'Esprit extend to C4D file format. :D
C4D Seems to be gaining support... Used to be Vue only acknowledged Poser and Lightwave

I really hope they port Ozone to C4D. A bunch of people were asking on Vue's board and they seemed to be considering it.

is Vue d'Esprit mac only ? or is there a windows version

There's a Windows version.
Vue d'Esprit was windows, then eventually ported to the Mac. With Bryce it was the other way round.
One thing I wish we had in Cinema is the same material handling as Vue. Vue doesn'tt have as many channels as Cinema does, but it's materials dialog is one of hte most elegant that exist.
I'd love to simply be able to plug Vue into Cinema completely...

Errr, you want the material dialog to completely change its contents when you change a check box? and to take up the entire screen?
I'd like to have the proceedural options that Vue has, and the ability to mix them.
The other thing is the material management, texture tags and materials are one and the same, rather than separated.

I've used Bryce a lot over the years. Its helpful (and quick) for geology illustrations I do quite often. I'm intrigued at the possibility of better integration between Vue and Cinema. Has anyone used Vue and Bryce? How does Vue stack up to Bryce? I've read that Bryce is better than Vue overall.
Since I do this kind of work a lot, I would love to see some better landscape/environment features and plugins for C4d. I've had some probs with DEM imports since they tend to have such high poly counts.

You mean SLA ain't enough for ya?? After all with Fusion you can mix awaaaaaayyyyyyyyy......:surprised
Niely, Fusion doesn't make up for Vue's mixing abilities...
I'd be lost without any part of SLA, I admit, but being able to mix based on vertex planar values (which axis it lines up with most) is something Cinema doesn't yet have.
JoelD, I'm no expert in DEMs, but my understanding is that they're not models, but raster images with height information. Like a countour map.

C4d imports DEM data (as do Bryce and I assume Vue) and translates it into a mesh.

First post to this forum....and a most excellent forum it is.
slightly off topic....but not sure about posting rules. sorry if I offend anyone...u only need to tell me once!
But I would like to know as a new user to C4D if anyone has experience of these three products compatibility with Cinema.
Vue seems to have dealt with some of the ease of compatibilty.
Bryce not sure but love it and would like better integration.
World Builder compatibility support planned...i think.
and how they compare in terms of killer feature sets. I'm a big fan of bryce but I would consider changing to vue or world builder if they gave me an easier life......

I frequently use dem's for my images. I open them in 3dem and export to terragen .ter, which I then use with great success in Terragen :) To Grey- a standard USGS dem is a ASCII file with height data for every grid point of the dem. You can in fact open a dem with notepad and see for yourself. Attached to this message is a image I rendered in Terragen, using converted and merged dem's for the terrain. Enjoy :D

of course the trouble with dem data is that it's only 2d.... so cliff faces don't get as much info as smooth gradual rises... which is a bit of a problem as basically cliff faces are where detail occurs and gradual rises are by and large where you just want a much reduced mesh. also it can't deal with overhangs or caves.
still that's a very beautiful image you've got there :) and lots can be done with DEM data in the right hands.

That's true, and I would worry about that sort of stuff in 3ds max, but it's Terragen, so it's no big deal. And I can have a 300-400mb dem loaded easily in 3dem with no ram problems...try to do the same with a mesh in max :) Dem's have limitations but in the kind of artwork I do in Terragen, none of that matters. Btw that image is nice, but I still wait till the day I can repeat that beauty in max, hehe.

Vue d'Esprit has very limited compatabiity with C4D, it is very dissapointing in fact the only thing you can export with 4.1 and mover is a terrain mesh that you could create in C4D anyway. You can not export any of the nice things in Vue like its vegetation or environments.

I agree. In my honest opinion one of the strongest points of Vue 4 is the incredible vegetation it can generate. But you cannot export that vegetation, to my best knowledge, which is very sad. If Vue would export vegetation it would be worth the price for the trees and plants it can generate alone :)

I've used Bryce since it came out on Mac, but Vue is a much better program, has better skies, a normal interface and a better set of textures in my opinion. Vue is used under another name as a plugin for Lightwave- it would be nice to be able to implement Vue into c4d, textures and the flexibility of Vues fog, mist etc.
Also Vue has quite good DOF.

has anybody had and experience of world builder? as they seem to be considering support for c4d according to the website. paul everett seems to have helped in this area recently with something landscapey he was working on (sorry can't remember name right now), add to that surface painter and it might prove to be a workable solution...of course a dedicated software package is likely to be better in the long run...but as with all things in 3d better compatibilty, file sharing etc would be a blessing...its not just a limitation of c4d but of the industry as a whole. i can't really understand why this hasn't been tackled better in any package (bryce, vue, world builder). arh well we can but hope.
ooh and nice image by the way....very nice image....i would really like to see a different camera angle though...or a change in the framing. but then these things are always subjective really...just enjoy what youre doing.

Tell me how you would like the new view and I will spin it up for you np :)

heh heh...requests huh.
well i would like the camera to be lower down with the sky/horizon possibly only taking up the last third of the image (pos. large peak left right of centre, less centralised feel to it)...what i really like about it is the snow topped peaks...and the valleys filled with fog....so i would like you to somehow get more emphasis on very good features. However this of course comes with a "imho" warning as no doubt someone might take a different view....ultimately the choice is yours as you are no doubt aware...so if you like it how it is keep it...if not then ditch it...whatever bud its up to you...just keep posting.

How's this? Ignore the artifacts on the bottom, they are caused by having a too-thin layer of high-density fog on the terrain.
