View Full Version : Animated Grass
pascal_blanche 12-18-2001, 09:52 AM Ok guys what about some "how to" topics? Here is a start:
What would you use to create a grass field animated with wind?
For now I just found two solutions:
- Druid gross-o-matic objects ( free ) that can crate nice wind animation on lots of instanced geometries, but well.. it goes crazy on polygon very fast :)
- Hour big friend Shag hiar can make interesting grass too, more complex and pretty fast, but hell.. can't fnd away to create good wind effect on it.. (mister shag master Matt clark could help us on this one ;) )
Any other possibilities?

hold on, i learned exactly how to do this kind of thing (grass, brissles, etc) in class when i first began learning MAX. i haven't done that in a long time so let me dig through all my old tutorials and i'll post the directions on here or i can e-mail them to you.

I've never used Shag to make grass, although it's probably quite simple to do. The first shot on my reel uses Druid, which I quite like, but you do have to watch those polycounts. I usually switch it off in the viewports.
Shag's built in dynamics are good but very difficult to get to grips with, and need a lot of tweaking. I recommend converting the shag helper to a Cloth mesh and using Sim Cloth to solve the dynamic situation as it's controls are more intuitive.

Willi Hammes has written a tutorial about animated grass.
Here is the link: themaxer.de (http://www.3dluvr.com/willi/main/tutorials/animatedgrass/animatedgrass.html)

cool tuttorial Mattias;)
hey matt.. now I got you... do you know if there is any possibilitt to change density of hair/grass, followign the dark/white of a map for example?

ha
today i tried this technique, and work fine
use miltisubobject material with 2 slots
for the first slot use the general texture and for second the black/with texture. Then put on sub mat ID 2 into the field of shag fur/thicknesss,etc../

I'd use Sasquatch and Lightwave.

is it really a good one? I saw renders of it..... neat! does it react well with animation?

Yes it works well. You can set up effectors and have control over many parameters for wind effects.
The built in Sas Lite that comes with LW7b doesn't have enough controls to make grass well enough.

Boy I wish I had more time for LW... I'm sure it's a good one :D

Pete Watje has a free Scatter plugin on his site at http://www.max3dstuff.com/
I've not tried it, but it lets you scatter objects using a greyscale map.
Could be worth a try.

Note: Haven't tried this myself -- an associate of mine reported great success with this little trick.
There's a script there by Michael Comet called BlowGrass, and it's just what the doctor ordered if you don't want to screw with plugin-bloat! All you need to do is use your favorite modeling method to create a simple grass blade object, apply a bend modifier to it (with bend center at the base of the blade), distribute copies of it around via your favorite method, and fire up the script. Set a few basic params, and Presto Bingo, automatic wind animation is suddenly realized:)
I think my friend used a few different grassblade models, and ran this script a few different times just for greater random natural-ness.
Good luck!

hi pascal
you can download the BRUSH COLLECTION script by Fred Moreau (a discreet demo tester) here http://mapage.noos.fr/maxevangelists/
it's free and you can paint on every object
don't forget to download the nature brush to do some grasses
ps:sorry for my english...
