View Full Version : Design Concepts
DXtreme 09-08-2002, 09:10 PM hi everybody, paintaholics, 2d freaks and 2d junkies (hehe just for you jeroentje)
i'll ask you a little question ....
but at first i'll tell a little story to let ya know what i want to do....
o.k....
i'll post here some sketches of my car design concepts...
yeah o.k. i know many people are really bored off this stuff and i understand this, because it's very easy to create!
but i'm interested in the whole concept..when i create a car i try to create a working thing!
so i think about the engine concept and the interior the seats and such things...when i think i got a good concept i start modell it in 3d!
so i hope to get some feedback from you ...
so here is my question:
what would be a concept you really interested in?
(maybe a suv, a sportscar, a wagon, a ofroader or a crossproject?)
i'll try to create a concept on your imaginations to get a feeling how it is to work for a design studie where i've a "mission" (don't know the right word ;-))
so long speech little sense, but i hope i'll get some helpful feedback and some sugestions of ya
ps: when i find a way to scan my last concept of a multi purpose vehicle i'll post it .....
so hope to create some crazy wheeled things!
.. with ya help!
thx

hehe, most interesting (and most difficult for you to do) would be a car that is truely an MPV... Like one car that can be modified from a minivan into a pickup, from a pick up into a familycar, and from a family car into a 2 seater cabrio...
And that still looks cool and still is affordable.
You want to work in car design, right? That would be a nice study for your portfolio aswell.
Cheers, jeroentje
And your cars are not boring us, infact it would be a nice change here between all the chicks, monsters and portraits ;)

thx ... inspirates me...i've a first concept for this mpv, but i've made it at format A2 and thats the problem...could scan yet
(but for 3d modelling it's better to have a big image to look at)
yes you're right jeroentje i 'll create car designs for a big car company (prefered DaimlerChrysler...like that cars and the actual design line (exclusive the new clk coupe ...that looks not like a sportcoupe..for me!)
maybe i make a little sketch now, tv watching is senseless, because there's only dump in it!
so i go back to the roots and sharpen my pencil ;-)
(did ya know my current design concept?)

Would love to see your car concepts! How can car design be boring? Most guys and many girls I know would love to do that for a living. Those who think it is easy to do, well, they don't know much about car design. There are hundreds of designers out there spending millions and years trying to come up with a good design. Just look at all the cars there are out there, how many are considered really good designs? Coming up with a winning design is a lot more difficult than people think. Post your concepts and somebody here will appreciate them.
Try to come up with a vehicle that is currently not available on the market. Something all other designers have overlooked. In the early 80's there were only vans and station wagons in the US? Chrysler combined the two and created a winning mini van concept that have made them billions and saved the company from going bankrupt.
Well, I for one really like cars. However, I'm not too thrilled with the latest car designs. Many of them look like deformed blocks or cheapo stealth fighter wanna-be designs. I like the classic American cars of the 40's 50's and 60's. It would be cool if you could take one of those beloved machines and redesign it for this decade (ala retro designs like the Volkswagen beetle, Ford Thunderbird and coupe-like design of the Plymouth Prowler). One car worthy of this redesign is the 55 or 57 Chevy Bel Air. But anything that used lots of chrome in the original design would be a cool one to tackle.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Good Luck!

yes yes..thats right day dreamer...i'm always searching for a winning concept, but i think i'm to crazy because all my concepts are some kind of "kick ass sports car studies"...o.k. not all but the most, cause i love sports cars!
so ...
i've made this during the boring period of watching tv ;-)
(just one hour concept)
it's a retro design study of a single seat gt prototype....
(as i said..i love sportscars)
i try to give it a little similarity to the streamline cars of the 30's
and combine it with something modern!
:
:
as i said i always produce ready concepts, with specs and so on...
so these are the specs for this one...
engine: V10 biturbo - ca. 700hp @ 14000 U/min
max torque: 900 Nm @ 9000 U/min
0-100 km/h (62 mph): 2,3 sec.
quarter mile: less then 10 sec. i guess
Vmax: more than 330 Km/h (206 mph)
hope you enjoy and give some feedback..possible car (not for series car but maybe as a special car )
thx...
if ya have own sugestions of car concepts..feel free to tell!
ps: guess wy the cars name is W.esp !
the mpv concept will follow the next days i hope...

@kirt...yeah you're right...the 57 chevy belair is one of my favorite cars....i will try this, never thought of that, but now ..yes could be a nice concept, even i didn't like the redesign of the ford thunderbird...the spirit of the old thunderbird is missing!
but prowler is a great concept (could be a car for me ;-))
i had the idea to create something like the 69' dodge charger or a hemicuda convertible (like nash bridges ;-))
fantastic car!
so i will doodle around and post some things when done

is the concept that bad that no one want to say something about?!
yeah it's something crazy on four wheels, but i really want to know what you think about and maybe: would you drive it;-)

I love the covers on the wheels it gives it a very stylish look. It's very much a Lemans car crossed with a road sports car, which in turn gives an interesting design. It would certainly turn my head if I saw it driving down the street.
My girlfriend recently bought a Landrover Freelander, which I think is a great car in terms of looks and design. Off roaders are usually boxy and clunky however they've made the Freelander into a good offroader with looks. So more stylish 4x4's are needed I think, in the UK anyway :)
Probably not. Not that I wouldn't want to take it for a spin, but rather because I think it would be physically impossible. It looks really small and I'm over 6' tall. And where would I put my family? heheheh.
It's a nice design which sort of reminds me of the Batmobile. But not really practical. It seems like a design that has a limited buyer base. About the only person I can see driving this car are rich single guys (I'm pretty sure that alienates most of the members of this board). :D
Maybe try and do one that has a larger user base and you might get more opinions about the design. Just a thought ...

yeah, I am sorry, but I have to agree with Kirt.
Designing a car that looks cool is easy. Designing a car that is usefull is less easy.
When you can design a practicall and affordable car that also looks great, that will make you a true designer. And that project will be more interesting to do and more challenging aswell I think...

yes you both are right!
i know that problem...this was only a try i was bored and started swinging my pencil!
but the real concept i want to present is still on a paper, i haven't the time to scan it and of course not the abillity (it's on a2 painted)
so i must work tomorow and then i've three free days then i'll try to scan it in a copyshop or something like that!
and then i'll see what you say about my vision of this mpv!
as for this thanx for comments and your thoughts, i'll take this advises for future projects!

Very cool design! Looks like a race car!
It will be a good idea to complete the front and rear views using Photoshop so it will be easier for people to see the designs.

do a new concept of a 1966 Chevy Chevelle SS, i have tried but my concept art is not that good, although i can draw pretty well.

Don't.
The looks of a car should be dictated by it's purpose.
And if you want a 66 Chevy, just restore a 66 Chevy. That will be the best way to drive a 66 Chevy, anything else will be a fake and therefore a lesser car.

yes that's right!
you can try to imitate the design of the good old muscles but the spirit of these cars could no one ,even the best designer not ,imitate!
so i always try to design a car like the muscles, but ithink this is something that should touch carefully by designers...look at the redesign of the new thunderbird or the belair...nice designs but the feeling and emotions of an original thunderbird and belair could this cars never reach ...i think!
retrodesign is a difficult point so i'm very carefull in using it.
i'll try to figure out my own style.......(think this would better in the industry).....maybe create something new!
::..::so today is the last day i've to work for 3 days!
that means i'll create something new,by using your advices!
results will be uploaded!
