Post Apocalypse... turn a city shot into a nuclear wasteland.
Deep Space... for all the scifi nuts, paint a 2001-esque space station or a galaxy or whatever.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea... get a nice underwater shot and add a habitat complex, or a submarine, etc.

maybe it's a good idea to have the rule that you only can suggest topics if you provide a source plate? :)

Ruins of an ancient civilization - Get a jungle or desert picture and paint the ruins of the civilization on it.
High tech civilization - A picture of some place to make a futuristic town.
Whatever you want - give us a picture and the theme is decided by wich one (Could be done from time to time...).

I live in Toronto, I have a fairly large library of personal digital photography. I wouldn't mind donating a few images that would be appropriate for this mini challenge, looks fun :) Message me Roberto if you are interested. I can send you a contact sheet with 12-24 images. Anything for some community interaction. :)
I think one should definitely supply a pic together with the topic suggestion :)
Here is mine:
Paint a head (http://www.holgerfrohloff.de/images/mattes/paintahead.jpg) (just add a new head to the side or perhaps modify the existing ones to be others :)

hmm, i dont have any referance image, but "Structures on Mars" would be a cool one for a rocky desert scene.
Heck, structures on the moon could be cool too. We could use NASA photos.

Until now we have taken an environment and painted in details.
It would be nice to do something the other way around. Like taking a photograph of for example a house or a ship or something, and paint the surrounding landscape.
Something like this I mean: http://www.dusso.com/images/mp02/mp46.html

I have an Idea (many):
Get a picture of a castle (for excample Versaille palace) and turn it into a GHOST CASTLE
Get a picture of a calm village (nightshot wouldb be perfect with moonlight) and the give a task to the artists to turn it into a zombie village, where zombies are crawling around
Get a picture of something beautiful and good (like good/evil good) and turn something like that into evil. BaHahawahaahhaa...
Get a picture of a politic person (Bush) and turn the picture of (him/her/it?) into something stupid or funny (you decide)
Feel free to deform and reuse my ideas I just had some popup ideas an i wanted to share
edit:
Get a picture of an anorexic or a very thin person ( Ally Mcbean ) and try to turn that person into a really fat or just a fat person.

Hi all,
How about an Elephant into a Oliphant (Them big nasty Elephant creatures from Lord of the Rings)
or even a little heard of them- what will an oliphant look like in it's natural habitat or are they bread in captivity?

maybe something easier to start, a day/night, or change to winter scene. I also liked the haunted house thing I've seen lately.

nice layering on the rocks
I’ve got an idea for matte wars that takes its inspiration from Aaron Sims' Creature Designs and coincides with nocric’s ideas a couple of posts up:
Jekyll and Hyde (I guess I should give credit to Robert Louis Stevenson too!)
What we do is take someone’s photo (unfortunately I have to post a picture (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bradyresidence.com/greg99.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bradyresidence.com/greg99.html&h=248&w=199&sz=10&tbnid=6e5-8HESxjsJ:&tbnh=106&tbnw=85&hl=en&start=105&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dnice%2Bguy%26start%3D100%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN)according to the rules. Apologies to Berry Williams) and paint the alter ego standing next to the person.
