You can get a free Max Import plug-in from Alias . Go to the Maya community and click on Downloads.

Try out the FBX plugin from Kaydara. It supports quite a buit moved between maya and max with their new file format.

You can check what it supports between maya and max here:

actually what i was looking for is just something to import models created in max to maya... i have the 3ds plugin from the alias site, but the cd i'm getting have all the objects in .max files, which i can't use unless i have max... the kaydara plugin still needs for someone to have max in order to turn those max files into fbx files, and then fbx files into maya files...
i have the feeling there's no way around this unless i have max... :( sux...

Yea, definatly not, especially with 3dsmax. Max files are stored in a different way then most apps. In order to cut down on file sizes it uses a bunch of information where you actually need the libraries from max on your machine to read it. Deep Exploration actually needs 3dsmax on your system in order to translate stuff out of max.

Try checking Right Hemispheres Deep Exploration. It imports and exports all sorts of crap. I used it before on a machine that didnt have 3DSMax on it but I was able to view Max files. (never did try to export any though) There is always Polytrans 2.2 for Maya but it aint a cheap program!!! Good Luck!

Deep Exploration needs access to 3D Studio Max in order to read *.max files. There's no way around this given the nature of *.max files.
See here (http://www.righthemisphere.com/forum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=492) for more information about this.
