Hello all,
I just placed an order for MB6, however I have a question:

My main 3d app is Maya 6.0.1. I would like to implement both of these programs together in my workflow. For example someone on this forum suggested using MB6 for whole body movements such as fighting/dancing, etc, and use Maya for facial/hands stuff. This makes sense to me and would like to play around with that.

What scares me is by reading this forum and I see mixed result's/feelings with MB and Maya workflow (importing, exporting). It seems like it works for some but not with others.

Is there a certain way to import models from Maya into MB6 and back to Maya when you've finished that'll work. Reason I ask is cause if the manual says to do it a certain way, then in theory it should work...but it's oviously not working for everyone.

Thanks in advance.

Hi olioli,
I use Cinema 4d and MB 6 and other than the fact that Alias has not released the SDK so that Maxon can rewrite the importer it works as designed. Currently we have to use the fbx file converter to bring a .fbx 6 format in as MB 5.5 .fbx which is an extra step but not that big of a deal. It still works fine. One thing I've noticed in the forums I visit is that I think some people may not fully understand what is and is not supposed to be imported/exported and how models are supposed to be constructed. For Cinema to MB there is a specific way to do things (naming convention, world z is different, weighting/skinning) and all you are really supposed to bring back into Cinema is the animation data only. I think some people are trying to use MB in ways it was not intended. Also Maxon (the makers of Cinema) write the plugin for the Cinema/MB exchange. For Maya, Lightwave, XSI and Max those plugs, I believe, are written by Alias and whether there are problems with the plugs or user error will have to be seen. I think a little of both.
I think you'll like it. Good luck.

I completely agree with Sammer. FBX can be picky, but it is a great way of porting between 3D applications in general. If I have MB in my pipeline, as I'm building my structure in Maya, I (now) frequently test it out into MB. If you set everything up properly, characterizing is pretty fast, literally click and drag.

Hello all,

I am currently workin as an intern, and one of my jobs is to do research into the different programs used in 3d. Director/vice pres was pushing for motion builder, and asked if could do some research. He seems interested in makin a purchase, as I have become after lookin over comments from the masses. I do however have a couple questions. How do you actually go about settin up this pipeline? get model and skele done in maya (application i use) import into MB, animate, export back into Maya? also if you have a scene setup in maya, can you also import that into MB so you have references to work from. I thank you for your time. I apologize for the elementary questions, just have not idea about this program. Thanks again

mike

The short answer is yep, that's how it's done. You can also download the demo, docs and vtms to see it in action.
Good luck
