I am looking for some good tutorials, or just plain info, on makin good explosions with shrapnel. Specifically I will be blowing up a text title and would like to involve pieces/shrapnel. I know i could carefully model the letters so they would be desintigratable but I bet there is a better way out there among all the lw gurus, something that is easier and less time consuming since this project is meant to be fast. I can do the explosion part no prob, but just need help on the exploding model. I have looked online but havent really found any good tutorials that fit my goals. Any help is appreciated. Thanks all.

Could you set the text to be a particle emitter, then use the fxlinker to link some "shrapnel"-like objects to the particles? Disolve the shrapnel until the explosion and then disolve the text object and un-desovle (I guess that should be resolve) the shrapnel. I don't know how it will look, but it might work. Make sure the shrapnel-like objects look like they could have come from the text and make sure the particles fly all over. Just my uneducated guess.

BTW I am going to that new Lightwave tour!!!!! Just thought I would add that, I am pretty stoked.

hadnt even thought of that. ill give it a try, but i was actually wanting the text to visibly explode into pieces. your way kinda fakes that by hiding the text in the explosion i assume

Quick solution may be to use Boolean stuff and unweld the parts from each other, using SG_Explosion2 (http://www.informatik.hu-berlin.de/~goetsch/Englisch/ExploMain_e.html) to break apart the pieces. You could also break apart stuff using the BreakIt plugin (http://mapage.noos.fr/webto/lscriptInfo.html). Mike Blackbourn has a little mini-tutorial/description on doing this with a tree, which can be found at: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7861 . Although not directly related to text, it may prove helpful. If you need further stuff, just ask. :)

wow! that tree plugin is exactly what i need! im even thinkin now that using that plug i could make a solid block and use the plug to blow pieces off around my text, makin it a much better effect. heh. thx a bunch

I couldn't get the "BreakIt" plugin -- is it just me?

Deuce, the link goes to http://http://www.artistnation.com/members/paris/tais/BreakItBeta.zip (note the extra http at the beginning).

So, just use http://www.artistnation.com/members/paris/tais/BreakItBeta.zip and it'll start downloading just fine :)
