before up[grade to max 5 i suggest your friend upgrade to Win 2K/XP,
max & 98 doens't like each other. I've experienced it before... max run slower, morpher modifier will crash often, etc..etc...
cheers

I doubt it will work.
I'm using W98: 3DsMax3 does work quite good in it, max4 - 5 times slower, max5 - couldn't install it...
I'd suggest to upgrade the OS first. Maybe NT will do good...

Max 5 needs a workstation to work :D
Just kidding ..
But it needs strong computer ..
your friend should upgrade to Windows XP its the best I've ever used

In one of the PDF's on Discreet's site it actually says OS requirements are Win 98, Win 2K or Win XP, and that Win 95, Win NT, and Win Me are not officially supported.
So they claim to support Win 98 officially, yet Max never really ran well on Win 98.

max 5 did NOT run on my comp. with win 98, even with 600mh/320 ram, wich is more then the minimum, it got to the splash screen an then it quit
why not ask discreet?? or use their native forum to ask tech support?

thanks for the input ill just use this as a tool to get him to switch to xp
as for why i didnt ask discreet i seem to get quicker responses here and i didnt want the corp line " it will work fine on win98" then find out it wont when i try to install it on his machine

I have to say, that I ran max 4.2 on windows 98 for quite some time with near flawless performance. I did not do any intense animating, mostly modeling(some pretty good poly counts), rendering, Brazil etc. I also was using a pretty under powered machine. That said, when I knew my copy of max 5 was being shipped, I installed a new hard drive(was time for a new 1), and upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional. Seems like the logical thing to do.
Upgrading my system slowly, all that's left for me are a new video card(geforce), MoBo and a P4.
