i feel dumb asking this, considering its kind of a n00b question, but when i make a shape with lines like this:

When i go to extude it to get a solid shape, i get this.. there's faces missing everywhere. What should i do to correct this problem?

your spline is not closed. Select the first node (square one) by click and move it. You'll see that there is another node under it and that they are not connected. (if you select by dragging, you'll select both of them, and you won't see anything)

Connect those 2 points (by exemple, move one over the other) and you'll be OK.

I dont understand how the spline cant be closed. its all one line and i simply smoothed and beziered some of the points.... http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/shrug.gif

I even checked.. its all closed. any other advice?

go to the utilities panel>more...>shape check. it will tell you if the shape self interects. sometimes moving a bezier handle can make the line cross itself.

Just out of interest, right click on the object, and select properties, and uncheck backface cull.

If you are 100% sure its closed, click the line, go into its properties, click SPLINE, select the spline to get it highlighted in red, then go down its properties list and hit "reverse" then extrude.

It wont add caps if its facing the wrong way :wise:
