Don't have much experience with hair or fur and I am looking at doing short grey, thined out hair of an old man.

What makes you choose one method over the other? Is hair normally just used for long hair and fur better for short? I read that fur renders faster than hair, but with enough work can you make it look good enough for live action integration?

thanks for any help!

use fur. using hair is a lot of hassle and i wouldn't use it unless you need to (medium-long hair) fur should do fine, as for the way they render, they both look pretty much the same. hair though, is a complete dynamic simulation that takes time to calculate and can make your scene very heavy and crash your computer often. don't use it unless you really need that nice flowing hair motion like in the shampoo commercials.

thanks for the response. Yeah fur was pretty much what I was thinking especially since it would pretty much be static hair, being so short.

But now I have the option of either using MR or the mtorUltraFur that comes with RAT for Renderman. Anybody have suggestion of which to go with? I have seen quite a few shaders for rendering hair in MR, like bigMuh's, but not sure for shading for Prman.

if you have the choice choose mtorUltraFur !!!

from the renders I have seen it looks great and seems very powerful.

However I am a little confused after reading the documentation. It directly shows the slim palatte for mtorFur with color controls for Base,Tip and Spec. mtorUltraFur doesn't have this.

How do you control the color with mtorUltrafur? Are the settings derived from Maya? Are there shaders out there I could use?

Hopefully somebody can clear up my confusion. Thanks for any insight!
