View Full Version : Animal : Prowler Cat
Mangaka604 09-07-2002, 07:45 AM Hey all,
This is my first post here. I finally decided to do a short animation in Maya 4.0. I haven't used Maya at all since version 2.5. Then I started working and have been primarily working as an animator in Softimage and XSI more recently.
This is one of the characters in the short, my friend is making the other one. I haven't had too much freetime to create this character so it took awhile....almost 5 months (working on it roughly 2-3 days a week). Much of my time has been spent tweaking the fur.
Anyways, feel free to critique and comment.
Cheers!

No, for sure change the feet, they are way too big for that bunny i mean that cat, did i mentioned that the face looks kind of like a bunny, nice fur. do something about the claws too.
I agree that the head don't look a cat; a bunny, or a dog, or whatever, but not a cat. Other than that, cool.

The feet/hands are supposed to be oversized like that. It's not a real cat, rather it's from a concept I came up with. This cat is also rigged to walk upright also, which is why his feet are so huge. Imagine Moomba from Final Fantasy VII.
The ears are much bigger than normal and longer to make it look more sleek. True, this makes him look more bunny like, but if I made his ears smaller and feet normal, then that's all this cat will be...normal.
The minimalistic teeth is put in there because I don't want this cat to be menacing. It's going to be the prey to a much larger beast.
As for the eyes, I'll work on them.

In my opinion, the feet and the long ears give the character a little comic-touch. Did you do this on purpose?
Anyway it looks like a "steif" doll :p
But great model, like the expressions

Yes, the exaggerated features are there on purpose. I want it to look more fantasy like. I'm happy with the way it turned out. I'm not a modeler at all, so perhaps my standards aren't as high as others here.
I'm not that familiar with Maya, but how did you do the fur.

I dig the whole look of it...the only thing that bothers me is that it looks liek a stuffed animal more than...a real animal/creature. I can't really pin point what it is, but it just looks...too fluffy maybe...i dunno..he's not dirty at all......i just dont' think it passes off the look of a real animal....
However, i love wild cats and have seen quite a few pictures of them...so maybe i'm just too picky...
Good job.

The Fur in Maya 4 can get pretty complex. Basically, I first used the 3D paint tool to paint on to the actual model, the different sections of fur I wanted, thus making a reference map for all the baldness attributes (this controls where you want fur and where you don't).
I used about 35-45 different fur patches so I could get better control on the lengths of fur and various attributes on it (there are quite a few).
Texturing the fur, I simply used the same reference map I created before and I took in a small sample of cheetah fur without the spots into photoshop and added in the spots. This will be the color map for the fur. In Maya, I applied the texture to the model thru a Triple Switch Node and then applied that Triple Switch Node to the color attributes for the fur. After that, I just basically repeated that for the arms and other areas.
